I want to try what you are doing with the germination. I think perhaps I had bad luck on some grass seed because I covered them, maybe too deep? I looked Jelitto up again. Those commas in the prices threw me but I think if I actually go through the steps I will figure it out. Another site I have looked at is Hazard's Seed. They have a lot of grass seed. Bluestem is my all time favorite grass of all the grasses. I want to increase the area of bluestem in my garden, it is so gorgeous massed and has interest all four seasons with the exception of about one month when you first cut them. I collected all the volunteer seedlings of the 'Blues' today and planted them in a separate area. They are on the other side of my house, a long distance from the other two types so I don't think they did any cross breeding. I didn't think they would come true from seed but after reading that you ordered the 'Prairie Blue' type, maybe they do. Seemed I'd read they don't somewhere. I am growing these types: Native 'Okies' Native New Mexico type (seed from Plants of the SW) 'The Blues' I have been wanting to start some 'Blaze'. I am only just now aware you can grow them from seed after reading your post. These three I am growing are each noticeably different. The native Okies get taller and are stiff, like they are spray starched, although they start out slower and more yellowish green. The New Mexicans are bluer and thicker, have longer leaves, shorter blooms and are not as stiffly upright. The clump is very pretty all summer before blooming, quite ornamental. I will see this year how 'The Blues' differ, so far they are lighter blue than the New Mexicans but shorter than both the others. I ordered 14 of them from SRG last fall.

Last Fall I bought a lot of grasses from SRG. Then, as soon as I put my order in, they put everything on sale. (!).. So I ordered more. So YES, they do have a Fall Sale and I am planning to take advantage of it. We got a ground "wetting" yesterday. It evaporated immediately. I do hope you are not in that part of Texas being ravaged by fires. I think Oklahoma is next as the fire danger is very high. The winds had died down here but now they are back.

OK, here's some photo's taken yesterday. It was late in the day and the lighting wasn't stellar but you'll get the idea. First, my Monster M.s. "Morning Light", which has yet to set its plumes, along with a stand of Calamagrostis "Karl Forster"...I may get two more to place here as they provide a wonderful privacy screem for the porch and the Monarda just isn't doing the trick here. Next are some M.s. "Varigatus" along the back hedge with Calamagrostis "Avalanche" planted in front. I'm going to have to move these forward about 3 or so feet in the spring as the Varigatus have gotten huge in just their second year. Another of my M.s. "Varigatus". Love the color and texture of this grass. I moved this M.s. "Zebrinus" this year to get it into full sun and it's flourished. This is a 4 year old grass, which has been moved 3 times now. So I'm counting this year as it's 'first year' and we'll see how big it gets next year. Great behind the birdbath. ...and here it is last year. This is as big as it got. Not enough sun I'm sure. Mailbox bed new this year. Pennisetum just blooming now. Didn't want too tall a grass so as not to block the neighbors driveway view when they are pulling out of their driveway. Pennisetum fits that bill perfectly. M.s. "Gracillimus", In bloom and completely covering the Northern Sea Oats to its left. M.s. "Purpenscens" and P.a. "Hamlin" P.a. "Hamlin" Next to the shed..... And with Agastche "Blue fortune" behind... And finally, I know this isn't a grass, but my favorite "PERRENIAL" in my garden, Gaura "Whirling Butterflies". Marginally hearty in my zone but seems to like where it's planted cause this is it's 4th year and it comes back better every year. Hope you enjoyed ! Blackie

I planted 2 in late summer last year and they bloomed then, but I don't remember exactly when. They came back strong this year and started blooming a little over a week ago. I don't know if it's my imagination, but everything seems to be blooming early this year--must have been the 80 degree days back in February and April.
