Hi William.

I had around 150 different varieties at the end of last year, which was the last time I updated my spreadsheet. I'm sure the total headcount is over 1,000 by now, but that spreadsheet is even further out of date.

True, Daphne require good drainage but they also require adequate moisture to survive. The term "good drainage" doesn't mean dry conditions and these terms can be easily confused. If not given adequate water, well-drained soil can quickly create dry soil. Daphne can't tolerate dry conditions and they can die from lack of moisture in a short amount of time. Perhaps the Daphne 'Briggs Moonlight' mentioned in previous post is thriving because the "extensive drainage problems" were helping it get the required amount of moisture to survive. For the Daphne 'Summer Ice' mentioned above I would suggest getting it out of the greenhouse and planting in the ground in average or better soil and giving it ample amounts of water on a regular basis until established and then normal watering after. If you are going to keep it in the greenhouse, watch out for old flowers staying on the plant and rotting which can lead to disease in stems and then dieback of that stem which sounds like the symptoms you might be having. Greenhouse conditions usually encourage heavy flowering in a high humidity environment, which is not an ideal situation for Daphne. Good luck with your Daphne and we are all hoping it makes it. The Daphne t. 'Summer Ice' is a fairly easy variety to grow and will survive nicely in decent soil with normal care and watering in the landscape. I have three of the 'Summer Ice' in my front yard that have grown very well for years. They produce flowers almost all year for me here in Oregon and are a wonderful addition to the yard. The scent on a warm evening is amazing! I also have 'Lawrence Crocker', genkwa, 'Wilhelm Schacht', odora 'Marginata', X houtteana, jasminea, 'Brigg's Moonlight', 'Napolitana', and Edgewortia c. growing well in my landscape with no special care or soil. I'm also going to be planting other daphnes soon.

Grow lights are no substitute for sunlight. While plants can grow perfectly fine under lights, the sun emits a far broader spectrum of electromagnetic wavelengths. Not only does it give off visible light, it also gives off infrared and ultraviolet radiation as well. The ultraviolet rays are what cause a plant's leaves to get sunburned, just like it does with us and our skin. This is what sunscreen blocks. When you feel the warmth of the sun on your skin, this is the infrared. Plants that can tolerate direct sun are usually already acclimated to it when they've been grown outside and exposed to it. When plants are raised indoors, they haven't built up this natural protection to these UV rays. This is why, when we move our plants outdoors, we have to do so gradually. This gives our plants the time they need to adjust to receiving these intense rays, no matter how much artificial light they've been grown in prior to this.

Esther, while I/we sympathize wholeheartedly with you I found your last sentence referring to the landscape crew as “ignorant pieces of garbage” an unfortunate choice of words. I have always thought how fortunate you are in that management allows you (as a resident in a quadrant setting as you’ve described in past posts) ) to include a garden as part of their existing landscaping. There are many that wouldn’t. Unfortunately events such as these are bound to occur from time to time - it costs $ for them to hire a skilled crew and it appears management decided that no skill, just general labour is required to spray, mow grass, spread mulch, etc. :( Far from being unsympathetic, I have no idea what recourse you may have as a tenant (as opposed to a homeowner) that is “borrowing” space in which to garden. You could speak with management and ask - could the crew kindly be more mindful in future? On the positive side, you have a lovely garden which affords anyone admiring it pleasure, including myself. I love seeing the progress and growth each year and what may be new in your garden. The uglies will disappear with time and your beautiful garden will shine again. As angry as you may be, please don’t do anything that may jeopardize your continued enjoyment of the lovely garden you have created.

I do a lot of propagation of woody and other interesting plant material, and give the propagules a good start on their way toward bonsai. When people visit and show interest, I give these plants away. Of course, they look soo much better if they're in a nice pot, so I always have my eyes peeled for cheap ones. A few years ago, I bought about 3 dozen smallish soup bowls (hold about 2 cups of soil) with interesting drip glaze or planty-looking hand-painted patterns for $.99 each from Walmart. Obviously, soup bowls don't come with holes, but a .5 inch diamond core drill (around $20) makes short work of putting a hole in the bottom. You get about 20 holes per bit fir vitrified materials (glass/ceramic) - depending on the hardness.. If you are drilling terra-cotta, you might get 100 holes per bit. Repots I've been doing for the last 3 weeks: Sort of hard to see everything. These are my deciduous trees. I have about an equal number of conifers and tropicals, so this about 1/3 of my collection. I just unpacked 5 boxes of grasses from SRG:

20x Carex elata 'Aurea' Bowles Golden
20x Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Piglet'
20x Miscanthus sinensis 'Stardust'
20x Miscanthus sinensis 'Super Stripe'

I haven't taken off their mesh stockings yet, because I wanted to get them watered first, but from what I could see, they are outstanding plants.

Most of my beds are in a serious state of flux right now. I've been digging and dividing grasses, and getting ready to build and install 8 new raised nursery beds. They'll be 4'x8'x12" with full drip irrigation. It should be a huge improvement over my old soaker-hose-rigged nursery beds.

Does SRG have another sale in the fall?

They have a great catalog but we are in a record breaking heat/drought summer already.

I recieved my 25 yesterday and they sure look nice.

And the $1.50 per grass makes them look even nicer.

This is my 2nd order with SRG and prior to this year I never thought of buying plants online. LOL

Last Fall I bought a lot of grasses from SRG. Then, as soon as I put my order in, they put everything on sale. (!).. So I ordered more. So YES, they do have a Fall Sale and I am planning to take advantage of it.

We got a ground "wetting" yesterday. It evaporated immediately. I do hope you are not in that part of Texas being ravaged by fires. I think Oklahoma is next as the fire danger is very high. The winds had died down here but now they are back.

Thanks donn and cactusgarden. I might wait until fall, it's a lot of work just keeping my existing plants going this year.

We have had a few fires in the San Antonio area, but not like the area west and north of us. We did get 1.5" of rain this week but are still way below average. Add that to an unusually cold winter and early arrival of triple digits and it's been a rough year for the garden.

It's been a crazy year weather wise in this area. Record setting lows (-32), blizzards, and them we received 12" of rain Easter Sunday and had another 5" within a week, and now record highs and extreme drought. I pray for everyone affected by the droughts and fire. Being in agriculture, I know how devasting mother nature can be.

Santa Rosa Gardens, I don't think there's much on sale right now.

There is another sale in the fall that I'm waiting for since it has been so hot and dry this summer.
