In the past I've made daylily crosses just for the heck of it to see what would happen...anything with anything...not that I've changed that much but now that I am hooked on daylilies a few things occured to me....When you make your crosses do you only cross big flowers with other big flowers? do you cross tall with short? short with tall? ruffled edges with spidery types? I have been reading and understand you are suppossed to have a plan of what your goal is but my only goal is to see if I can make some pretty flowers. :)

Oh... whew. This is a big question. Everyone hybridizes for a different reason and has different goals. For me, I want a pretty flower, but I also want to make sure my plant is hardy, has nice thick scapes, and good bud counts. So, I try to cross flowers with the traits I like, and see what I get. Usually this is done by back crossing and line breeding - meaning breeding the baby back to its parent to get the desired trait to be stronger.

Some people are going for rust resistance, some for Northern hardiness... others for new colors, new patterns, new shapes.

I think basically, as long as you are not breeding for a pretty flower without keeping in mind the longevity of the plant (ie dies easy, gets crown rot easy, very suseptable to diseases, weak scapes = broken scapes = 0 flowers), you are good. All us daylily lovers want our plants to be around forever and ever... so strong plants are good plants.

My goal is to have fun....no plan to try and register anything.

But if you are entertaining any plan to maybe register something down the road, you do need to take a different approach.

Hi Barb Some of your questions are outside my range of knowledge, however I can maybe help on some of them. With regards to planting this plant outside I think you could but I am not sure about overwintering it (someone will know though). If you intend keeping the plant in a pot on a sunny porch I would suggest that you put the plant container inside another container and fill the gap with gravel, this will allow you to water the gravel and help keep the roots cool. You will need 2 fairly big pots to do this as your plant will put on a lot of growth. The plant will respond better if you can give it some form of shade during the hottest part of the day. I love the blue and green you’re going with. Funky’s right with it being ” fresh and clean.” I know you don’t want to buy anything, but when you mentioned plates, I thought of fans. MUA should really be provided mechanically, not through “drafty” walls, crawl spaces or attics. The hood you are purchasing should provide you with the volume of MUA that is required to run the system efficiently, assuming it is correctly sized with your gas range. Your log stove should have its own MUA system, but if you are relying on the hood system, it needs to be sized to accommodate both the log stove AND your gas range. The International Building Code for Residential Construction should provide all of the details you need (in the mechanical code) for this system - even if your local jurisdiction or contractors are not familiar with it.
