New Lawn- Creeping Charlie Infestation!
Comments (2)You are the poster child for the second reason why we shy away from rototilling for turf: weeds. Rototilling brings up weed seeds long buried under the surface. Then when you start watering, the weed seeds germinate and you get a real even coverage of the weeds - much like yours. The first reason for not rototilling will sneak up on your over the next three years as the soil settles. The soil will settle to the profile of the unrototilled soil just below where the tiller blades fluffed up the soil. This leaves you with a bumpy surface causing the mower to bump along (at best) and scalp (at worst). Yes you need to start both lawns over. If you have only one sprig of creeping Charlie, you will soon have full coverage. You need to do this in the fall which is the proper time to seed a lawn. Start in August to get it done and the grass growing well before Thanksgiving. You need to start early spraying with RoundUp to get all the Charlie killed out. It might take three attempts, each one week apart, with daily water in between to germinate all the weed seeds in the lawn. What kind of grass did you seed? Where do you live? Do you have much shade?...See MoreReseeding, Grubs, Creeping Charlie...OH MY!
Comments (2)Wow! They've really upped the Trycloper in WBG! It used to be you had to get Brush-B-Gone to get that much horsepower. That is the stuff you need. Your basic problem was to be expected with a spring-seeded lawn. New grass cannot deal with summer heat so it dies. But you needed to do something so...you learned something. Now let's get going to fix things. Applying a grub killer now is a waste of time and money. They are going to sleep now. The time to apply grub killer is when you see the June bugs attacking your porch light in May or June. Get the best seed you can afford. It should have a guaranteed analysis that shows 0.00% Other Crop and 0.00% weed seed. Otherwise you are planting new weeds into your yard. These bags are usually not available at the big box stores or Walmart. Look at a garden center - an expensive garden center....See MoreGolden Creeping Jenny, where to buy seeds?
Comments (14)I already have creeping charlie that came with the property. It is green with scalloped edged leaves that can get up to 1 and a half inches wide. I fight it all summer, every summer,in 10 out of the 12 beds. Thank goodness it is easy to pull. I have had Golden creeping Jenny in a part of my garden before. It is much slower then charlie and flatter to the ground. It also has had winter die back and has been burnt out by a hot spell and crowded out by it's taller fellows which has made it easy to keep ahead of. Where as charlie is an iron invader.I understand the nature of these creepers. I have given the same warnings many times to other new gardeners. I deal with creeper menace all summer, might as well be one I want. If it goes where I don't want it, it's not weeding, but lifting a new plant to put someplace else I would like some, lol Well since seeds are out and I will have to spend money anyway, is there another ground cover plant choice that would work better? The area at the base of roses, around daylilies and the nooks and granies. Thanks for your concerns. Elizabeth...See MoreI want to grow Creeping Charlie or other green groundcover
Comments (1)You might want to look at ground covers on the Stepables website. They have a search engine for various conditions. Sagina might be one that would work for you but I have never grown it. I have Creeping Charlie, variegated, in a basket, it has long trailing stems that might be a problem for tripping, at least when it's in a basket. Lots of people complain about it and want to get rid of it. Here is a link that might be useful: Stepables...See MoreTiffany, purpleinopp Z8b Opp, AL
