I highly recommend Ison's Nursery in Brooks, GA (near Griffin). Muscadines are their specialty but they also sell lots of other grapes, berries and trees. They have worked for many, many years on developing the varieties and were very helpful with helping us select plants that suit our needs.

Lazy K Nursery near Callaway gardens specializes in Blueberries. I found the evergreen blueberries that I was looking for and will make a trip to pick them up in the fall. Buck Jones in Woodstock gave me the lead.

vsjo, if you will be at the fall trade, i can bring you cuttings or a plant or two of my muscadine. I bought it from a guy in the Old Norcross area for about $2 a plant a few yrs back. It does well - low maintaince.

How many different kinds of muscadines are there?

Home Depot usually has blueberries when it is time to plant them. They have them in 3 gallon pots and stock several different varieties (for better fruiting it is best to plant at least two different kinds, you may know that already).

I'm not an expert but as I understand it there are highbush blueberries (for the north) and rabbiteye (for the south) and their hybrid: Southern highbush. On muscadines there are male (which pollinates but doesn't fruit), female (which fruits but doesn't pollinate others) and perfect flowered muscadines which contain both male and female flower parts. These are things you need to know as you begin your search. You might also want to check out an organization called NAFEX for fruit sources, also CRFG. Nafex stands for North American Fruit Explorers and CRFG stands for California Rare Fruit Growers. I think it is always a good idea to explain acronyms. These organizations are excellent sources of information.

They sell two dozen (or so) different kinds of muscadines at Ison's, many that were developed there. There are dark and bronze (scuppernong) types, some that are better for wine, some that are better for jelly, some that are better for just plain eatin'. And then there are variations in the ripening times, so you can space out your harvest over a longer period of time. We got three different types of the bronze that all ripen in succession and a few pollinators that cover all of those. Like I said above, the folks at Ison's really listened to what we wanted and gave us great advice on what to get to fit our needs. You can get a catalog free from their website and it is a great source of information if you are interested in muscadines.

Big box stores are Home Depot, Lowes, etc. A great big box with everything in it.

The 4-H clubs sell bluberry, crepe myrtles, etc. To find out when call your county extension office at 1-800-AskUGA1. You will benefit the kids and they sell them very reasonably.

My county extension agent told me something interesting regarding recent research on a better way of planting blueberries, azaleas, crepe myrtles, and other acid loving plants. Rather than adding amendments to the red dirt they now say to just take the plant out of the container, place it on the ground, and mound pine bark mini-nuggets or pine bark shredded mulch slightly above the height of the container and at least a foot beyond the leaves. Once the roots invade the pine bark you will have a healthy vigorous plant with excellent roots. It requires frequent watering during the first year but I usually have to do that regardless.

If you are going to dig holes in the dirt, have the soil tested now! It will take about 6 months for the sulfer to acidify the soil if you need to make changes. I found sulfer, iron sulfate, and ammonium sulfate at Ace Hardware. None of the garden centers I checked had any of those.

Search both google and Gardenweb for blueberry soil and you will find some good info.
