I keep killing Ajuga

I just love Ajuga but I've killed it all over my garden. I have lived here fourteen years and have added compost to my clay soils almost every year but it keeps fading away to nothing. I've tried many different cultivars and different sizes of pots too.

Other ground covers grow well, some too well. I'd like some well behaved ground covers that tolerate partial shade between shrubs and perennials that won't swamp smaller hostas and ferns and heucheras.

Lily of the valley and sweet woodruff both are too aggressive and have outcompeted many. I wish I'd never planted them. Getting to that point with blue star creeper too. It climbs up into my heathers and dwarf conifers and shades them out.

It could be too shady but you could try lamium but that is more finicky then ajuga.

How's the drainage? IME, ajuga is an extremely easy plant to grow and tolerant of both sun and part shade with reasonable moisture but doesn't care for soggy or very heavy soils. Lamium is an excellent and very well behaved groundcover for me for shade as well - I've found nothing finicky about it. Other choices could include Veronica peduncularis 'Georgia Blue' or Cotula (NZ brass buttons). Or for a very low GC, Corsican mint or baby tears but both of those need moisture and can come and go a bit. Green carpet or Herniaria glabra will also take quite a lot of shade but it is also very low (mat-like) and slow to spread.

Olga, Cool, I'm in Laurel. IÂve been lurking and occasionally posting for years and noticed your postings. I didnÂt realize we were so close. I usually pay extra close attention to those in my climate. SDLM really fit the bill for me due to color, bloom form, and size. Buttercup yellows and oranges donÂt appeal to me. I tolerate Fragrant Cloud because itÂs a vigorous bloom machine but I think sometimes it hurts my eyes, and pinks are pretty easy to find. IÂve been concentrating on whites, near whites, apricots and true or dark reds (red is my favorite). Like you, IÂve also been trying to get away from spraying by spÂing my most BS prones. IÂve stopped bothering with winter protecting a long time ago. Another goal is to find less thorny ones. After getting rid of my prima donnas I think thorns are my next issue. However, if I can find a healthy SDLM IÂm willing to give it some TLC for a couple of years. My wife and I have friends and relatives in Rockville and Germantown and I can get away with a few things that wonÂt survive their winter. My chinas and my Francis Dubreuil still have all of their leaves. But maybe thatÂs normal, this is my first year with them. Besides, maybe I can take advantage of global warming. Thanks for the advice on the long caned roses. It makes sense, my BdeN didnÂt take off until I planted it in what happened to be a particularly well irrigated section. Thanks for the offer. Right now there's nothing much to look at. With the exception of BDeN they all winter killed at least above ground. BDeN would have been fine if not for the rodents. However, if you have any cuttings of SDLM (or BDeN) you are willing to part with IÂd be glad to stop by or meet somewhere or here. IÂm kind of hoping BehnkeÂs would carry it, but they havenÂt. This may not be applicable to the first one, with the browning leaves, but here's what happened to one of mine this year. I bought two clems and sank the pots in the garden, as I always do with new ones, side by side. A week or so later, one is doing great, growing and blooming its head off and the other has been reduced to a twig. I figured out that the slugs were eating one and leaving the other alone, so I pulled up the twig in its pot, and moved it pot and all to the driveway during the day to get sun, and brought that danged thing inside every night to keep it from the slugs. Several weeks later, after it had put up TWO stems and had grown about 2' tall, I moved it back to the garden but in another place, and darned if the slugs didn't attack it again, but not the ones next to it. I have gone out in the dark several nights since and killed the slugs feeding on it, but I don't know how I'm going to protect it when it gets to its permanent home, and I don't know why slugs like that particular one better than any of the 60 or so others I grow. Now, as a general rule, clematis likes a lot of water - are you sure you're giving yours enough? And, don't give up on them yet. I find that clematis is the one plant I grow that is most likely to come back from the "dead" if you pretend it is still there and keep watering.

Watering every other day is too much. Soil should be moist, not soaking wet. No fertilizing until you see new growth, not even fish emulsion. Find the "how to save a potted gift rose" thread and follow the directions. That will help.

Best way--and hardest work--is to just keep pulling the bermuda grass out. Water well, then start pulling when the soil firms and water has soaked in a bit. There are a number of herbicides that target grasses, however few of them have labels for flower beds. In some cases, the grass herbicides will also have some activity against certain broadleaves, so if you go off-label and just try something, you might get a few of your flowers as well. You might look at Preen in a small area as it is recommended for grasses, but don't know what it may do to the plants you want.

When we bought the house fourteen years ago there were no flower beds, just lawn. We've been adding compost to the beds we put in the first year, every year but it is still Willamette Valley clay. I have probably planted over fifty pots of Ajuga of various cultivars. It all fades away to nothing except in one area which is actually one that is more clay than others as it has so many tree roots we can till.

I have some Lamium but slugs and earwigs get it really badly and the bright silver color is a bit much for all over the yard.

I'm ripping out brass buttons today, won't grow where I want but does grow where I don't want. Corsican mint keeps dying out then coming back then dying out then coming back.

I really think it's not you but our climate - it's just too damp for ajuga...but maybe I'm wrong, since gardengal has a different experience. I'm about to plant some haircap moss - would that work for you? or pachysandra?

Ajuga spreads like a weed for me, except for A. Chocolate chips. It doesn't stop grass though and likes to make big clumps or grow into places where I don't want it. I'm wondering if the perfect groundcover exists. Acaena inermis 'Purpurea' is very pretty and spread well, doesn't make the barbed seed heads of the blue-green form, Acaena saccaticulpula Blue Haze. Both of these stay low and don't seem to die out like the other low ground covers I've tried. I find if I put some small rocks in the Corsican Mint it provides a moist microclimate that keeps it from dying out.

My latest attempt is Dymondia margaretae. I just planted it so I'll have to see how it does. I'm also trying Vinca minor in a bed in the sun to see if it will survive as it stays low and looks good all the time.
