moving my sedum

I have a beautiful sedum growing along the front fence but between the squirrels and neighbors children alot of it has been damaged .I think the name of it is black dragon

Can I transplant it to another location without killing it,it would be in the next 2 weeks that I would want to do it if possible.

All the sedums I have seem to be Realy tough. I haven't killed one yet.

same here- I've had sedums that I moved, and not only did they do just fine, but several of the bits that broke off en route took hold in odd crevices of the walk way!

they're resilliant plants, and so far, not even hard freezes have hurt mine.

Hi. To grow compact it will need lots more light. I hope you're comfortable with Karate because it's time to chop! You might have better luck gradually introducing the plant to more light before you slice. It's so soft right now that if you increase the light too much at once it will probably burn badly. Once you've safely moved it to bright light and the new growth becomes more compact, then you can hack and repot pretty safely.

I have lots of different sedums, and have noticed birds on them, but only a few times over the years. Maybe they're going after bugs, or the seed. I also leave the dead plant up throughout the winter, and still rarely spot any birds on them :(

Yeah I think you're right about the white; looked again today and it was gone. The scale on the last plant if there is subtle, but how about the numerous non-subtle brown spots, some of which look eaten into the leaf? Some kind of mite? If so, here's the combo I've come up with: Acephate - Amazon: "97UP 1lb bag Generic Orthene Insect & Fire Ant Killer" - http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/insect/05507.html says "Insecticide with some effectiveness against spider mites. Systemic." Forbid 4F - eBay: "Free Forbid 4F Miticide Spiromesifen 1/4 OZ free gift when u purchase 3 pipettes" - "Like Avid, it is translaminar. The active ingredient, spiromesifin, while not systemic (i.e., it does not move through the plant’s vascular system like, for example, Merit does), is absorbed by the plant’s leaves and will move from the tops of the leaves to the bottoms where the mites feed." A lot of the more mainstream systemic products use Imidacloprid, and while they don't claim to work against mites, they also don't mention that one reason that spider mites become a problem is insecticides [such as Imidacloprid] that kill their natural predators.

@Liz: Ok, that's good to know. I'm getting confused now because I've read materials saying water more (until water comes out of pot) but less frequently (dry in between watering). I also changed soil composition to improve drainage (with pumice and other gritty materials). @Lorien: I moved my Sedums out of direct sunlight. I'm not sure if it will work or will worsen the situation (as I've read they like a lot of sun). On the bright side, I now have a lot of leaves for propagating the Sedum (some already with aerial roots; waiting if new leaves will grow).

I move my sedums when it's 90 degrees and they still settle in just fine!

Sedum is also pretty easily rooted, so you may want to take some cuttings and establish new plants.

Ditto with mine. I've moved an Autumn Joy sedum three times and it never even pouted with me.

I think I bought about 5 Autumn J. Sedum last week (I just know they're called Sedum). Would they grow in an area that gets some sun in the morning and tends to be a bit dry? I'm in zone 7.

My autum joy are on the east side of my deck they get sun till about 11:00 . They are in a pot I water about once a week.

.. My experience has been that they grow well in any type soil (unless it is way too rich) and that they will flower even if they have been in dappled shade. I never have any problems moving them around and even dividing them all summer. They are the most hardy perennials I know about.

When is the best tie to divide sedum autumn joy? how often should it be done? how close together should they be planted?

Hello Delaney: for dividing, the rule of thumb is to divide at the opposite time from when the plants bloom. So a fall blooming plant like Sedum Autumn Joy should be divided in the spring when it is first coming up. But perennials that bloom early in the spring should be divided and moved early in the fall, when the worst of the summer heat is behind you - yet there is still lots of time for the plant to get established. I rooted some pieces in water and placed them into pots inside during an Edmonton winter. The plants didn't do to well inside, but survived. I put into the garden in the spring and they flourished and one sent out a shoot that I covered with soil and another plant started.

I have my great-grandfathers sedum which has been moved (and divided) many times since 1959 (and at all times of the year). Wonderful memories for my grandchildren are being passed on.
