I took advantage of the great weather today. It is a bit breezy and not as warm as yesterday but I opened up any milk jug that had sprouts so they could "harden up" and I took some of the ones that had just a few seedlings showing and transplanted them into 4 in. nursery pots. I've gathered what I have left to plant out and if temperatures drop tonight, I'll put them in the garage and bring them back out tomorrow. We have had so much rain that so many of them look so spindley. I pinched the blue flax back and that about killed me to do that. If weather is again nice like 60 and above, I'll work on planting some more out tomorrow. Can the wintersown seedlings survive 44-47 degrees?

I managed to get a few things planted yesterday. Today it's pouring rain on and off, causing us to remain in our car, along with others, at one nursery until it ebbed. Die-hard gardeners weren't going to let some water keep them away. ha. Everyone was mowing yesterday too while I planted. I should have gone back out even tho it was late and mowed too because now it's soaking out there and the grass is high. It does make weeding easier in most places, gotta watch plant roots don't come up with them too though.

Jali, when I emptied my rain gauge on Wednesday it had 1.4” in it. When I emptied it yesterday morning it had another 2.4” in it! Flood of '65, indeed! I emailed Barb last nite to let her know I had arrived safely—tense, but safe—and I mentioned the Flood of '65 to her! She's not old enough to remember it, but I am! It rained, like this time, for a week or whatever and everything was saturated—and then, like you said, it DUMPED and that was all they wrote! All the bridges in/out of Denver on the west side of town but ONE washed out, including one that was just a couple years old and had been built for a “500-year flood!” I have pics of a span of that bridge laying in the middle of the Platte! Huge sections of I-25 and the train tracks between Denver and the Springs washed out! I still have the newspapers from right after it with all the pics! But I hadn't stopped to think that this was the 50th anniversary of it!!! Cherry Creek Dam was still new back then, and there was near panic on the news that it was going to break—they were releasing water as fast as they could. I lived in an apartment about a half a block from Speer and we were listening to the radio so we'd know when to RUN—and then the power went out! I'm still here—so, no, it didn't break! And 25th anniversary of the Limon tornado! Wow! Some years to remember! Guess you remember that one well! What I remember was I was watching TV weather and all of a sudden the radar went down! Switched channels, and no radar! Switched again—nobody had radar anymore! That's when we knew it was “serious!” If the Limon radar was wiped out—what else in Limon was wiped out! Wasn't long and the channels were picking radar up from the airport, and that's when most of them switched to doppler! Memories! I've been watching Denver radar today, and the forecast, and at least it looks like this is about the end of it for right now, so, hopefully, no repeat of '65! Prb'ly not a 100 yr flood, which I'd say would be a one-time event instead of long-term rains. A 100 yr flood would be like downtown Johnstown, PA in July 1977 w/10 inches in an afternoon & historical flooding. Johnstown also had an even more catastrophic, famous flood in late May, 1889 after similar heavy rains. Still, my Sept 12.48" beats the (I'm ~60 miles west of) Hagerstown, Md's wettest month (Oct 1976) by a few tenths, and its record goes back to 1890 or so. But such a record is only for one single spot and some nearby, unrecorded spots could easily have greater-amount records. Over the yrs here the stream (too small to be a creek) has meandered noticeably, one side eroding and the other side accumulating sediment, some holes filling up w/rocks & sediment or new holes dug out, etc. Edit: This got me thinking and I realized I had some old NWS spreadsheets from some other locations. Found nearby (just 12 miles to my west) Cumberland, Md's records and my Sept amount does not beat out its record amount -- 12.94" in August 1915. Edit2: More records in my library. Chambersburg, PA (25 miles north of Hagerstown) had 14.49" in Aug 1911. So my amount is looking less impressive in the big picture.
