Living on a rather low fixed income means one has to be frugal. Yes, I shop for bargains in food. We have only 2 grocery stores here. One is a Texas chain, the other is a Super Walmart. Not a lot of choices. Walmart used to mark down their meats 2 to 3 days before the 'sell by' date. I found them to always be still very good. One day while shopping I overheard a customer asking about one of the employees in the meat department. Turns out she is a friend of the employee and wanted him to save all the mark downs for her. I have not seen a marked down package of meat since. Good for her, Bad for me! Seems like that ought to be against store policy. But I guess they need to sell it. I also try to buy all our groceries, and other things, too, only when they are on sale. Baked goods, not so much. But then I don't buy many baked goods. I bake our own. And it seems the stores here are not nearly as good about marking things down in the produce section as some of you have mentioned. I do envy those if you that have such choices! (1) Pot Holders in the drawer b/w my cooktop and ovens (24" wide) (2) Knives and Prep & Cooking utensils & tools under my cooktop (36" wide) (3) Foil, parchment paper, and my gluten-free utensils (a special need) (31" wide) (4) Silverware (24" wide) (5) Wraps and plastic bags (24" wide) (6) Electrical things like extension cords, switches, etc. (24" wide) (7) Linens (dish cloths and dish towels) (33" wide) (8) Coffee supplies: K-cups, sweeteners, filters (my in-laws are resistant to changing to K-cups), coffee scoop, and butter (the toaster is next to the K-machine) (33" wide) (9) Serving utensils (pizza cutters, corn holders, serving spoons for pot-lucks, etc.) and oven tools (thermometers - both manual and electric) (27" wide) (10) Flashlights & batteries (27" wide) (11) Dog supplies (spare collars & leashes, meds, etc.) (27" wide) I have one 4-drawer stack with 3 shallow drawers: #s 4, 5, 6 The rest are 3-drawer stacks The Dog supplies are in a roll out tray shelf (ROTS) that is the equivalent of a shallow drawer b/c it's placed as high as I can get it to have the most vertical space possible for the dog food cans on the bottom ROTS. The contents and locations are based on what goes on in that area. I don't really know what they're made of. A thick, strong reinforced cardboard? Something else? I just know that if you squeeze, drop or bang them on something, they don't bend, fold in, crease or anything. Oh, I'm sure they would have their limits. I wouldn't let the kids use them for sword-fighting, lol. They are wrapped in a very shiny paper that has a coating on it, almost as if they have been laminated. I accidentally had one sit in a bit of water once and it didn't harm anything but it was probably only in the wet for 3-5 minutes. I think they should last years unless they are super-abused somehow. I have no idea if they would fit in drawers like that. I just measured and the dimensions are 2.5x2.75" and they are 13.5" long. The parchment paper one is the same size around but is 17.5" long. I stand corrected about tooth paste tubes. Presently, those are made of plastic or plastic with other material layers. I fault my memory. I'm too old. I do remember aluminum tooth paste tubes and according to several articles, manufacturers sought alternate materials for the tubes during WW2. http://www.intelligentdental.com/2011/09/18/about-toothpaste-tubes-made-of-metal/ Metal tubes did not entirely disappear. Those are used to hold materials that may be incompatible with plastic. I recall 2 yrs ago, getting a tiny tube of medication that was in a metal tube. In recent times, have seen lubricants, artist paints, and adhesives in metal tubes. The article below states that tooth paste tubes were made of a tin-lead alloy up to WW2. It was suspected that lead might have been bad for health (depending on how much leached into the paste) and by WW2, the tube material was changed to aluminum, some with coatings and other layers. During WW2, a push was made to eliminate aluminum in tooth paste tubes as the war effort restricted the supply of aluminum to the general public. Another tooth paste tube article.
