Good organic product or remedy for rough heels?

Hi folks,

Does anyone know of a good solution to dry rough heels, i.e. which natural or organic product I can buy or home remedy I can make? I'm really suffering with it this summer... especially all those barefoot walks on my patio. Ugh.

A lot of the intensive heel cremes I find are basically petroleum/mineral oil based with a bunch of urea added. Not so green, there.

Or if this is directed to the wrong board, please point me in the right direction.

when mine get really dry I start with a cool foot bath (summer)or a warm one in winter, adding a few drops of peppermint essential oil. Then take a pumis stone and scrub off the dead skin cells. After that rub on a mixture of sugar, olive oil and a couple drops of essential oil and sit with my feet up for a few minutes. This gives the oil time to soak in. Then rinse with warm water and pat dry with a towel.

vwtx has it right. You can't treat rough/dry heals by moisturizing; you have to slough off the hard skin and then moisturize the soft skin you reveal. I find that foot files work better than pumice stones, personally, and a ton of people swear by the PedEgg. (No kidding. I was shocked as well.) For moisturizing after sloughing, something with olive oil as a base should work very well.

There will always be zealots in the anti-biosolids area that are long on "it might be a risk" or Europe's standards are lower,yet they still fail to produce real hard data. For example, what they leave out is the load limit of some of these metals, such as copper and lead in class A and even class B biosoilds. You would need to apply Milorganite EVERY year or some other biosolid like it for 345 years for lead and 278 years for copper for it to reach its EPA load limit. That doesn't even account for organic binding, mineralization and leaching/migration of the metals harmlessly in the soil. I don't know about you, but even with long life in my family, I doubt I will be around that long to worry about it. I use Milorganite on everything and I have even seen the independent report and have spoken with an independent scientist who tested it for a bioremediation project for the DoD. She indicated it was lower in metals and other contaminants than the tap water and virgin soil they were going to use in the project. Compare class A biosoilds to Scott's or Ironite sometime and decide which will be better to put down as fertilizer for your kids or pets to play around. BTW, the National Science Foundation did an independent study and risk assessment in 1995 of EPA biosolids regulations and found they were far below any levels that would possibly pose any threat to humans, wildlife, soil or water and agriculture. The zealots seem to overlook this fact as well in their quest to malign well managed practices of biosolid use. There has NEVER been a documented case of the regulated use of biosolids causing harm to people, animals or plants in over 35 years of use in our environment-yet the myth and junk science persists. I will continue to use and benefit from Milorganite on my lawn, veggies, ornamentals like temperate tropicals and palm trees.

I support the do nothing approach. Any treatments are short-term and generally only effective after damage is detected. Most pests are attracted to flushes of growth. On fruiting trees this is most prominent on water sprouts (non-fruiting). Remove the water sprouts and any vigorous growth located blow the graft union (undesirable fruit any way). Limit pruning to once per year and leave damaged leaves in place since still feeding the tree. Avoid excess nitrogen fertilization which contributes to the flush. Select companion plants that host beneficial insects. Review the soil analysis to ensure balance and that there is suitable availability of micro and trace nutrients. Good luck.

My hands get chapped rough and dry in winter and especially at gardening time. The best thing I found for them is a 2 step process.. First I put a little sugar in the palm of my hand--not quite a teaspoon although I never measure. Then I pour baby oil over the sugar until it's soaked and procede to scrub my hands. This acts as an exfoliant and removes all the dead dry skin. Then rinse off the sugar and use a little liquid soap to remove the rest of the sugar but still leave some oil on my hands. Then pat them dry but don't remove all the moisture. Then I apply Glysomed hand cream, just like any other hand cream. This is a realitively cheap hand cream you can get in most stores. I got my last ones at Walmart. It containsGlycerine, Silicone and Chamomile and is fragrance free. This has to be the best hand cream I've ever used. If anyone sees this old listing, thanks for the suggestions above! I have another weapon to suggest in the "dry heels" arsenal: gel-heel socks. I buy them at BBB (link below) but when I was looking at the Footsmart website at products mentioned earlier, I saw that they have them, too. In spite of professional pedicures, a sandpaper-scraper and a ton of heel creams, I still battled dry heels for years until I started using the socks. Sometimes I sleep in them every night, other times just once in a while. Adding the socks to pedicures, scraping and cream has completely solved the problem for me. I have also heard many people swear by the egg shaped shaver thingy .
I get cracked heels whenever I wear sandals .
As long as I wear socks and shoes I am fine .
I was told that the cracking problems are caused by a fungus .
Try a little athlete's foot cream mixed with your regular care .

Vicks VapoRub - no kidding! Slathering the soles of your feet w/VV at night (put on socks to avoid infusing the sheets) will stop night coughing in its tracks (appropriate in winter) and an unexpected fringe benefit is feet soft as a baby's behind - no kidding! Try it for a few consectutive nights - amazing results, cost effective and easy.

I have a Checi nickel file I really like. The Ped Egg apparently needs to have the blades replaced periodically, which the Checi doesn't require.

You have to maintain with the foot file regularly if you regularly do things that roughen your feet (I do, too).

I swear by pure unrefined shea butter for heavy duty moisturising but it'll make your sheets greasy. I wear socks over it at night.

I agree that the pumice stone is useful. I also have trouble with the skin on my heels cracking. There are salt and sugar scrubs that can help. I have one called Big Kahuna Native Naturals that contains mineral salts, Hawaiian salts, almond, avocado, apricot, jojoba, grapeseed, sunflower, safflower, olive, and Vitamin E oils, grapefruit seed extract, and fragrance.

Whole Foods also sells something called Loofah Exfoliating Scrub. Straight vitamin E oil is also quite healing.

Since I studied karate for several years and kicked and exercised barefoot, my feet took quite a beating.

Personally, I decided to go with the "ounce of prevention" and just always wear shoes outside. Ikept stepping on junk in the yard and getting owies and ouchies and I dont know WHAT I was thinking wearing sandals when I was messing with the compost.

There's a playground in town and I dont know what kind of trees they use for the shredded bark mulch, but whenever we went there and I had sandals on, I get the most awful itching reaction and Id have to go in the bathroom and wash the dust off my feel and stay OFF the mulch, so same thing, realized i gotta wear shoes there.

Thanks for the tip on using Vicks. I have a menthol rub called J.R. Watkins, so I tried it after reading this thread. It does work really well for healing cracked feet and softening the skin (after filing dead skin).

I noticed that the info written on the tin says it is a good topical analgesic. I tried rubbing an inflamed tendon and sore muscle with the product, and it was helpful. My gardener's hands also benefitted, as I rubbed the residual left on my hands into cuticles and rough spots.

What great tips, I'll have to try vicks. I wonder about the fungus thing. I only have rough cracked heels in the summer when I don't wear socks and shoes so I figured the socks were continually sloughing off the skin. I have to investigate the Ped Egg thing, never heard of it. I do admit though that it sounds a little scary if it has blades.
