New to forum and growing daylilies

Hi! I'm new to this site and just signed up this morning. I didn't know what I have been missing!! I have always grown perennials and have a rather hefty hosta bed; but because I'm running out of shade, I'm trying to get in to raising more daylilies.

I noticed an exchange site on here. I may try to exchange some of my hostas next spring for daylilies.

Do any of you have favorite daylily suppliers, or a hybridizer you follow? I'm in zone 5, so I want plants that will hold up to our harsh winters. Thanks for your help!

Welcome to the forum, and to the world of daylilies!

Curt Hanson (crintonic.com), RIchard Norris (ashwooddaylilies.com), and Karol Emmerich (springwoodgardens.com) are three names that I can think of, for hybridizers that work in cold zone areas. Most or all of their plants should be hardy to your zone. You can look at their websites, or you might be able to find their plants (some no longer sold on the websites, others at cheaper prices) on the Lily Auction (http://www.daylily.com/cgi-bin/auction.cgi).

(You want to be really careful about going to the LA, though - it can be addictive and before you know it, you have tubs and tubs and tubs full of soaking bareroot daylilies!)

You can also search out any daylily that has won the Lenington All American award, as they have proven performance across the nation. Some dormant daylilies that have won this award include 'Red Volunteer' and 'Mary's Gold'. If you can't find them on the Lily Auction, you can just Google them and find a seller online.

You might also try some of Judi Davisson's daylilies, at least some of which are dormants or semi-evergreens and are cold winter tolerant. (Hopefully someone here with more experience can chime in on that.)

Finally, I am going to put in a plug for one of my favorite daylilies (a Hite-Davisson introduction), 'Osterized'. It has been grown in both Maine and Michigan, so it should do okay for you.

Welcome to the forum. Daylilies are great even if the bloom lasts one day, the next day another bud or two or three will open and will continue the show for several weeks. Good to think in terms of daylilies that start early, then mid and then late so you have a season of blooms to mix in with your other perennials.

some crinum are extremely shy to bloom and need several years to establish, others will bloom in pots without being planted. Even reluctant bloomers like J C Harvey can bloom after being stressed out by drying at righ time of year and bloom while bulb is out of ground. Some can be triggered into blooming by withholding water for a month or longer then soaking the soil (like rainlilies after heavy rain fall) just be patient and one day they will reward you. I planted many different types because bloooming is at different times of the year. Try adding heavy organic mulch aroun base with topping of sand and later a little boost with liquid fertilizer in spring.

George, I read about the resistance of the varieties you mention, but didnÂt imagine that would change so much per location. I have to have those seeds next year to try. Si, el cambio es muy grande, after the 6inches/14.8mm of rain yesterday, I had to wear my wooden shoes to go to see the vegetables LOL! ItÂs sooo strange to walk with them but they help in the mud, and you write so perfect Spanish. How come? Raisemybeds, we covered the tomatoes with that lightweight fabric, although not pretty, till now (cross my fingers) the tomatoes and pepper seem to like that protection. IÂve been earlier shaking the stems and was wondering if the pumpkin pollination would be so simpleÂ not so, as per what I read. Bill, yesterday I didnÂt turn the compost pile that I left to mature, since I saw there were some pumpkin seedlings showing up, and I thought, well, you never know maybe they grow nice. This morning guess what, they were gone, disappeared. IÂd eat Butternut Squash every day, casually found a grocer that sells it. Back in Argentina my mother had a piece ready for my arrival from the office nearly everydayÂ Now IÂve got some Butternut seeds popping up in a propagator. Violet, I know thereÂs lots of info. However, last year while I was "researching" what happened that time to the tomatoes raised by me from seed, my husband convinced me to check a bit less ugly bugÂs pictures and diseased plants on the internet, and just try again, strengthening precautions. Pumpkin is not so popular here for eating, but for Halloween, therefore availability of seeds for consume (ie. to grow without chemicals) is just starting. Northern FAncy is so lovely! So funny how some are just suited to the northern climates. The NOID is very likely Margo Reed Indeed. It was gifted to me & I love it. I did get a start of the real Margo last year & this one blooms at the same time & looks the same, a very vigorous grower. It looks whiter in your garden than in mine, but maybe because it is growing beside a seedling I have that is very white.

That's a nice mix. Do you have any idea what the yellow and red varieties are? The rest are all different. I wouldn't keep them outside until the evening temps are into the 50's. I've never had a problem with transplanting. Mine get full sun and most like to be kept on the dry side. Most of the passies I've grown from seed take about a year to bloom except for foetida which started blooming in about 5 months. Good luck with your passies.

Welcome! I just received my order from Saksa Farms and they were huge fans and very generous with extra fans.
Also Oakes Daylilies have a great reputation. Not a huge variety I
But I managed to find a bunch.
I have extra Elegant Candy if you want. Watch the forum next month once things have stopped blooming ppl may offer you some.

Just remember that almost everyone on this forum is seriously addicted. Some are in denial, while others revel in their depravity. As with most addicts, one becomes a pusher also, either to validate one's lifestyle or to earn extra money to pay for one's habit.

Thanks, everyone for the suggestions. I've purchased from a couple local hybridizers (5 Acre Daylily Farm and Natures Edge). I'm one of those that likes to learn something new, so I've viewed some of the online instructions about daylily crossing. We'll see what I might come up with. I look forward to your help. (and yes, I believe I understand the addiction part! lol)
