achimenes, how long do rhizomes last?

Didn't want to hijack the other achimenes thread here. I got a shipment of achimenes this past spring and promplty forgot about them. I just found the package and the rhizomes are still in it. Will they survive till next spring or should I just order new ones for next season?

Haverhill! I was in Merrimac visiting family in Oct! Fall color was just beautiful and so was the snowfall!
Couldn't believe my good luck!, it hardly snows here in Ga.

I ordered some this spring too. I thought I had planted them all but then around July/Aug I ran across some I had not planted, so I planted them and they didn't come up. They did look dried out, but not all achimenes varieties look the same. Now I had gotten some others at a DC convention in Early July and planted them the next week and almost all of those came up.

I know that didn't answer the question. What I would do is start some indoors early and see if they start growing. If they don't, then you will have time to order some more.

Chaz - you need to plant now - and if there is any life left - they will come and you can let them grow, they won;t be gorgeous, but you will save them. They do OK under lights.
Otherwise order new ones for the spring.

Just to clarify if I read your question properly...how long do "they" being the blooms last? variety specific but a healthy plant will routinely produce blooms for six to seven months a year in my location. Perhaps in your location 4 - 5 months would be excellent results.

Lie others have mentioned. most Austins do tend to blow quickly, especially in the heat, even on the bush. My weather is going to be different from yours- no over wintering issues at all here, and it gets nasty hot/dry in summer. Better ones for me have been Mary Magdalene (keeps flowering, I get several flushes a year). Redoute, sport of Mary Rose ( likes it a bit cooler, and does blow a bit quicker than MM but flowers a lot). Pretty Jessica lasts well; can be a it flower shy unless she is happy (sulked a bit last year but has been blooming lots since repotting ) Tess of the D'urbervilles lasts better than some and blooms a fair bit for me too. ohh and I get some good flushes out of Prospero too. Not sure what to make of Munstead woods- it shot out a triffid like cane, last year which flowered profusely this spring, but havent had a bloom since! it does have a few autumn buds on it at present. I suspect it needs to go in the ground to do better, but I haven't got anywhere to put it really ( it wasn't supposed to get this big!) Claire Rose is supposed to be one of the longest lasting (can be used florist style apparently) but as it was a blackspotty balling mess for me, I chucked it pretty quickly. It does do well for some people tho.

How long do citrus leaves last?

My outdoor citrus trees are showing a 2 year life for its leaves. I am very skilled at moving trees in and out with minimal leaf drop but that stress shortens their lives quit a bit. It is much easier to take a tree in November's low sun short day and go inside to artificial light than going outside in Mays blazing solar heat and hours. 6b Steve

How long do Parsnip seeds last?

yeah even 2 years old is stretching it with parsnips. best parsnip seed is less than one year in storage. parsnips, onions, and many fruit producing plants and trees are all very short lived, and lose a lot of viability within the first 1-2 years. maters, peppers, grains, brassicas, squash, etc...i would say these can be stored for 5 years or longer and still be viable. you are of course still free to give it a shot with low expectations. you will still get a few to pop, so if you have a lot of old seed, some will sprout. the issue is the germination rate goes so far down they are no longer reliable, especially in small quantities.

Tish, you are welcome to all the snow!!! It's the only thing I hate about New England! It's gorgeous in the mountains, but when you have to shovel it...ugh. LOL

Irina, Thanks, I'll get them planted and keep them in my home office under a plant light. I'm so annoyed at myself for forgetting them!!!! I remember last year or so you identified a seemania (I think that's the spelling) plant for me (I believe that's the correct spelling. I left that in the pot while dormant and it came back this summer and is blooming in my sun porch/plant room. Thanks again for the ID.

Chaz - you are more than welcome.

I saw Achimenes growing and blooming at home in Siberia near Polar circle. People just plant the rhizomes in a soil with large potted foliage plants - they just come and bloom in summer and sleep in winter. I doubt the rhizomes are ever repotted.
