Keikis are not seedlings, so they can just be treated as if they were mature plants. Be sure that there is at least an inch of root. Choose a small pot and medium appropriate for the root diameter. Usually the same material as the mother plant is growing in will work fine. What kind of orchid is this? There is more information about keikis in the FAQ.

Hey Mike. Root pruning was a little nerve racking for me but I have done it with tropical fruits. I root pruned a mango tree, and yes, I was nervous but it worked just fine. I have not tried this on any of my citrus trees yet but my 'OroBlanco' grapefruit will probably be the first I tree I try it on. When I did it to my mango, I used a sharp knife and cut off 1/3 of the entire root ball. The only other thing I did was moved the tree to shade for a few weeks to recover, and the tree was fine. I would think it would be the same for citrus also. When I do this to my 'Oro Blanco', I will let you know how the tree does. Andrew

Hello Sheila, I hope some of the experts chime in for you... Here is my two cents worth... : ) Since you haven't had any advice yet... Others will help!!! I would go ahead and place them in a good fast draining mix and give them a good soaking with B-1 and Superthrive and let them sit in semi shade to acclimate and to adjust to all of the stress. Cuttings need to harden up, but if you have "dug" them up and they still have some roots, then place them in containers. Cows must have been "hungry" to take a bite from the top of the tree..i hope he still feels good...Plumies are toxic to animals and can cause skin irritation to people if the latex touches the skin. Since the top of one tree had a "bite" taken form the top..you can seal it to prevent it from getting water damage. (Rot) It may have even healed itself. Some use a latex sealant, but i use a waterproof wood glue and that seems to work very well. Hopefully you will have others that can give you some advice and we do have great members that can give you some help as well. Hope this helps... If I have the luxury of time, I carefully excavate close to the mother plant, snip the connection between the two, and leave the sucker in place to fend for itself and grow some roots. If I HAVE to dig it right then, which happens when I'm somewhere besides my own garden, I treat it like a cutting (minus the rooting hormone) ... potting it in a milk jug, covering it with a cut-off soda bottle, and keeping it in the shade to grow roots. I am tending suckers like this now, that I lifted from plants at Hollywood Cemetery ... 'Climbing American Beauty', "Nanny Pelouze Moss", and "Doswell Alba". All have grown nice roots and are in the process of being transitioned to life on the 'outside'. Best wishes for your continued recovery! (Here is a photo of a root on the "Doswell Alba", which Doug Seidel felt was 'Alba Maxima' ... a rose that I have been completely unable to propagate via cuttings. I am ever so thankful that it sent out a sucker, because this now means that I have an insurance copy in case something (Heaven forbid) would happen to the original.)
