Moving dug-up plants into a pot, how do I proceed?

I want to save these two plants. Dug them out of the ground, very few roots. I've soaked them in root stimulater. I know a cutting must set to harden. Does that also apply to an uprooted plant? These plants are about 2 1/2 ft tall, one has bloomed. The other had it's top eaten by a hungry cow :( but has surprised me with putting out three side growths.

Can these plants go directly into a pot with good potting medium?

Hello Sheila,

I hope some of the experts chime in for you...

Here is my two cents worth... : ) Since you haven't had any advice yet... Others will help!!!

I would go ahead and place them in a good fast draining mix and give them a good soaking with B-1 and Superthrive and let them sit in semi shade to acclimate and to adjust to all of the stress. Cuttings need to harden up, but if you have "dug" them up and they still have some roots, then place them in containers.

Cows must have been "hungry" to take a bite from the top of the tree..i hope he still feels good...Plumies are toxic to animals and can cause skin irritation to people if the latex touches the skin. Since the top of one tree had a "bite" taken form the top..you can seal it to prevent it from getting water damage. (Rot) It may have even healed itself. Some use a latex sealant, but i use a waterproof wood glue and that seems to work very well.

Hopefully you will have others that can give you some advice and we do have great members that can give you some help as well.

Hi Laura. Thx for the answer. Yes, the silly cow is just fine. Our drought has been so prolonged we have 8-9 month old calves that have never tasted green grass. They have plenty of hay, all their necessary mineral supplements, cubes etc, but no living grass. Poor animals haven't had anything green to eat in so long, they're desperate for ANYTHING green. They also ate all the leaves off a young redbud tree.

I did a repot, used Miracle Gro potting soil with 1/2 mixture of lava rock & clay pellets.

The last two days we've had 2" of rain, the plants look good. I'll just keep them in a protected area for a couple weeks.

I agree with Janet and as she well knows I have beating this drum for several years now. The old adage of heads in the sun and feet in the shade is an old wives tale. Moisture is what is required and that typically occurs when the roots are shaded since it slows down the evaporation of the water in the soil and the consistent moisture is the critical element, along with appropriate fertilization. For what it is worth, I have potted up countless numbers of clematis into one gallon sized pots and left them in the sun where they get morning sun thru midafternoon sun and they have been fine. One definite advantage of sinking the pots in the ground is that you won't have to water the pots as much since the soil will act as an insulator to the desication of moisture from the potting mix. Just make sure that the surrounding soil drains well or your pots could hold too much moisture and cause root rot.

Todd, Lilies never go completely dormant. Your old soil will preserve them a little bit, but at this time of the year I would plant them ASAP. If your bulbs are severely damaged after dividing, dust wounds with some antifungal powder. You can find it in any garden center.

Below are the elephant ear bulbs I dug up yesterday. The common green variety, Colocasia Escuelenta. This was 1 bulb when I planted it in June. Now it’s 3 in a line. It was not a big bulb, maybe 2” in diameter. The kind that come 3 to a bag. I had started it in a pot in the house around April, and moved the pot outside in late May. Then an animal ate the sprout off the top, and it began to make sprouts on the sides, and I planted it in the ground in early June. This performed so well compared to the one I planted in a pot, that I decided to see if I could keep it over the winter, and thus get a bigger plant next year. I had reviewed prior threads on how to store them. I have a cooler closet in the basement where I keep my tuberous begonias. The second bulb that I planted shows a new bulb growing on top of what appears to be the original shrunken bulb. That is what glads do, as I recall. But now, looking at this, I am not clear about what to do. I had read on here that the parent makes pups. But even the central bulb of the "3 in a line" is no bigger than what I planted. I was expecting to see a stem that could be snapped off before storage. I don’t see anything here that can be removed, unless it will look different after it dries awhile in the house. I probably waited too long to dig it up. Too many garden tasks in the fall! The top of this is as it was cut off. The leafy top got frosted a couple of weeks ago, and the leaves were cut off about an inch above the ground. So that part was exposed. It is soft. The base is firm. On the first photo it is sending out some kind of side shoot (also firm) that could have been a new leaf forming: it looks like a kind of reddish asparagus spear or sweet potato pointing to the lower left. So what do I do now? Trim off the soft parts? Wait for it to dry a bit? Thanks for your help.

I agree with Laura. Put them in pots and shelter to an extent for acclimation. From what i understand these are cuttings she planted and have rooted. South of San Antonio and to the coast has a sandy soil mix which I think is very well suited to planting Plumerias. Only reason why they don't grow is a pesky little thing called winter.

That rain was wonderful. I put every single container I could find outside to collect the rain. I got just over 5 inches of rain. That nearly doubled my year to date amount.
