I found the one I had back in the mid 1990s to be pretty hardy; the erstwhile management of Forestfarm said their seed came from one in some frost hollow of western WA that had seen very low temperatures by PNW standards. Current management of Forestfarm knows nothing about this...too bad they didn't keep better notes. And, I think this reflect a general thing going on with Forestfarm. They will still have rare plants but not someone - an owner-operator-plant-lover - going through the tedious steps to obtain the "best of all possible rare plants". (always time for a little Panglossian optimism!) I really don't think they are particularly susceptible to fungus for any reason other than having been pumped full of nitrogen to get them into fast growth...when sold as the decidedly odd looking 'mini Christmas trees'. They grow in Texas around the dry line, which certainly can be humid! Years ago someone posted a picture of some big ones in San Antonio. And also of course one grew in North Carolina. I think, south of say Richmond, VA, they are just under planted, and north of it, likely to die back in the coldest of winters.

I agree with Martin. It really depends on the fig cultivar and the age of the tree. I got 72 gallon size and 10 3 gallon "prize" little trees inside my garage. My garage is insulated but not heated. Here in my area (Charlotte) we will get temps down to 15 degrees but only 25 inside my garage. And I got about 90 or 100 inside my little greenhouse. Those in my greenhouse are older and can tolerate temps down to 25 degrees but I am just using my GH to keep them from getting below 25. I also have about 30 outside sitting tight against my house wall creating a microclimate. These trees are 2 and 3 years old and come spring I will plant them in the ground. Dennis

Palm Bob,esteemed palm expert, posted photos of R.rivularis that had fronds toasted at 25-29F in last years freeze in SouCal. Those were large trunking palms. He later posted pics of them regreening in summer. They key Bear,is too get them into the winter as healthy as possible.So they handle the loss of a few fronds in a valley winter. With your heat,they will come back fast. A palm to not let your emitters clog or sprinklers miss, in that 90-100f degree heat. And Fertilize..compost eaters they are..even steer manure is handled well when tossed..within reason. As an aside, mine here in the bay area gets better every year on slower growth. The only problem with Majestys is that they seem much more prone to fungal problems.Just remember, they out grow and survive them most of the time.

I did get a scion off his Changsha tree. He grew five Changsha plants from seed, left the small seedlings outside one winter, only one of them survived. He later grafted that Changsha plant onto a rootstock (he can't remember which, probably either poncirus or citrange) and eventually planted it in the ground outside, up against his house. He covered the tree for the first two years, giving it a chance to grow without suffering too much cold damage. But I made sure to specifically ask and he told me he had not bothered to cover the tree the last time (it was not a mild winter that year). The tree you see in the picture is that tree. He believes this seedling of Changsha that he selected might be slightly hardier than regular Changsha. But he is not really sure, and there's no real way to know at this point. Just in case anyone was wondering, this is zone 8. I don't think any of these trees would make it in zone 7 this far so north, with the exception of course of Poncirus trifoliata, and possibly citrumelo in zone 7b. So if you live in a colder climate zone designation, this is likely not going to be possible for you. Trying to grow these here in zone 8 in this cool climate region is already pushing things.
