Can you help identify this fragrant flower?

I was cycling along a road in the early morning sun and smelt a strong sweet perfume, I followed the scent until I came to a patch of these.

TY for the encouragement on the Liatris. Yours are very stately Karen. I have the Lavendar, Thx for the Common names Gardenweed. I was familiar with Gayfeather, but not the Blazing Star. Actually, this is a new perennial for me, just acquiring it last year from my daughter as a Mother's Day gift amongst many other of her babies she wants me to baby and multiple for her. She thought they'd be better in my care. Here's kinda how the story goes and how I wasn't sure what the plant's name was. First off, my first yr having it and there wasn't a tag with it, but it got planted in two locations, and I was under the impression they were two different plants. Foolish me. The one you're looking at here was planted in more shade, probably the reason it only got to about 2 feet. The other 3 plants were in FS, but crowded perhaps in my over full Sun location, they did well, but perhaps not as well as Karen's where she has afforded them plenty of room to grow and take in Mother's Natures best. I do like the flower, although it is debateable with some, but being so easy to grow and how hardy it is, I think I'll keep it around and sow it into pots for my sale. I will be keeping everything produced by WSing but my extras I will be selling. Of course, everyone here will have first dibs on the seeds and I willl religously collect them and pay forward how generous everyone was to me. there is quite a bit of shaff in amongst the seeds but I understand that shouldn't be a problem. I haven't sown it yet but will with an added amount of delight and love. Happy Sowing, Micki

Sounds like garden phlox or even dames rocket but without a picture it would be hard to guess. So many flowers that the discription may sound the same. If you end up getting a picture maybe post it on the name that plant forum I am sure you would get very fast results.

It's not working for me. I just see two boxes with red "X's" and a number symbol. Can anybody else see it?

I can't really tell, but it looks like a fragrant Nemesia, perhaps a clone like 'Fragrant Sachet' or something similar.

Ah, now I can see them, but I can't tell what they are. I'd say Nemesia is a good guess.

I was searching for "Nemesia" in the fragrant forum and came up with 2 entries- this one and the highly overrated fragrance FAQ, where someone said Nemesia Compact Innocence had wonderful fragrance. I googled it and came up with a photo and description that looks like your photo:

Since I read this thread back in September I have smelled every nemesia I saw for sale, I couldn't understand why none of them had any scent, yesterday I went to a nursery that carries rare plants, I finally found it! It smells wonderful jasmine like, he said it was rather hard to find, I bought 2, it looks exactly like the picture above, the 2 I bought are varigated with the lavender flower. I finally understand why he raved about the scent so much!

Angelsmell, I'm going to San Francisco for a visit this Thursday. Can you tell me the name of the nursery where you got it? I'm not sure where Fullerton is, though. Perhaps it's not near. Is it an annual plant?

Does anyone know where to buy seeds?

I bought seeds on E-Bay, the nursery I bought it at had 1 left and it's in So Calif in Orange by the circle.
It's no where near San Francisco.

The ones I'm familiar with are a fairly new series of nemesias chosen for their fragrance - I especially like 'Fragrance Blush', which has a slightly vanilla-perfume scent that carries well (at least indoors - I don't remember it being as strong outside). They would be annuals in most places, but I believe that with warm enough winters they should act more as a half-hardy sub-shrub. I dug mine in fall after several hard frosts, clipped it quite severely to reduce size and remove insect eggs, placed it under fluorescent lights and it burst into growth and bloom (I finally had to chop it back again because it had gotten out of hand). It strikes me as something that may need to be divided or rooted anew from cuttings every few years to remain healthy. Very easy plants, these nemesias.
