Columnea questions

I love columneas. I have several and have been unsuccessful at growing any of them that have the bronzy green leaf..such as midnight lantern, chocolate soldier, flash fire. I cannot figure out what the difference is in those vs the others. I recently repotted my midnight lantern from the av convention.. it was alive and just saw it today.. looks like it dried up..maybe they aren't as forgiving with neglect (my others thrive). Do you think they need different light? I've tried them in the basement (when i had over flow sale plants from our show).. same thing :o(

How do you grow your columnea? And what do you mean by neglect?

I have 20+ varieties and treat them all the same: Reservoir water and continually fertilize (1/4 strength). I let them go semi-dry and leech out the pots every six to eight weeks.

I have a healthy 'Midnight Lantern' in an unobstructed south window and another under lights (12-14 hours per day).

I grow my AVs, episcias and chiritas the same way. Don't know if this helps you.

i grow them like i do all my other plants (av's, episcias etc). The neglect is possibly letting them go too dry. It just seems to be more tempermental. I have several outside right now too. They probably get about 10 hours of light in my plant room. I might give it another try and keep and try it in the greenhouse. I don't know if humidity if a factor for those or not. I dont' see my gauge any where.

i use all the same soil mix (for wicking 1-1-1) for my plants. I was just hoping for a reason.. something i could fix.

Paul, I'm baffled..coupons on the internet?? 10.00 off and you find a LP just under? LOL..Lucky you..Darn, wish we had a nearby Lowes..and the other plants you got..!! I still don't understand how you got the other plants, (which are really nice) for 1.00 and/or free...lol..Sago w/12 fronds for 1.00? Drosera, Nep and Sarracenia, free??? You have got to tell me your secret..LOL..Do u belong to a Lowe's club? Is that how you got the coupons? If I'd got hold of coupons, I'd have driven to Lowe's, which is a good drive, but still, free plants? And those you mention are rare..You lucked out, guy.. Desert Rose isn't hard to find..I got one at HD for 15.00 though it was 2 yrs ago. You can also find them on Ebay. Also, several nurseries, like Buried Treasures sells nice DR..I got a bare root 'variegated' DR a few months back..can't wait till it wakes from dormancy..I want to see its variegated leaves. There's many Hoya sites including Hoyas R Us..you should be able to find a H. mindorensis..I'll keep an eye opened. Pug, Max is a cutie..I didn't realize Pugs got that big..25 lbs..I can see he likes posing for pics..lol. U have canes, and we have snow..it's not really the snow that bothers me..it's the -0 and ice. It's worse when electric goes out meaning no heat..I have birds to worry about. Driving or even walking is dangerous..but yeah, canes are awfully destructive. A lot worse than any snow storms we get. So, Pug, I wish you many sunny non-cane days..I looked at your 'denia, it's so pretty..do you have a Stephanotis, too? I like the Steph posted by Littlem. I've never seen a steph hanging before..they're usually grown on a trellis, but it's sure interesting. Mine still hasn't flowered, after all these years..sigh. Again, good luck w/your denia..they're a bit difficult, but w/some effort it'll do fine..a friend uses Epson salts on hers, think I'm going to give it a try..I also use iron, (just a bit) to prevent chlorosis. Not following the vegetarian remark, unless it's a joke about beans. I've been a vegetarian for 40 years and I swear I'm gas-normal. :-) I've never apologized for living, either. We all leave a footprint. I appreciate the fact that Canada has sat on the peat industry, but there's a great deal of difference between putting it all back and restoring the habitat. There's a lot of controversy over whether or not it's even possible; the water table has been changed, the soil has become nutrient rich, and species may or may not have been destroyed. All this is a small matter compared to the real problem: peat bogs are the most efficient carbon sinks on the planet, period. Nothing else touches them. Now, more than ever, we need every inch of carbon sinks we can get. That's my #1 reason for avoiding it. My other reason for not wanting peat in my seed mix is that I hate it. It stays too wet, then dries out and becomes hydrophobic. It has no nutrient value (which is-actually- fine for seed-starting), is acidic (sometimes good, but not for everything) and retains any pathogens the living moss might have had. By me, it's a lousy soil addition. I always lose seedlings in peat.I'd much rather use clean coir. Coir, of course, isn't an innocent. You have to find a sustainably sourced product and then figure in the environmental impact of shipping across the globe. Upside is that it's very light and compact, so can be shipped efficiently. There is no perfect solution.

One thing, there are Columneas, and then there are other Columneas!!! A lot depends on which one you are trying to grow. I have hads the best results with (I think) Orange Crush. Unfortunately the name is lost in the mists of antiquity, Iv'e had it so long. Grows (in winter) in an unheated,but not freezing south window, blooms later outside.

Sandi - I kept no name Home Depot nematanthus (wettstenii?) in a ceramic self watering pot in a superlight soil - and it loved it. But it is an unkillable plant to start with. I think Tropicana will do OK eventually, you just need to let it grow bigger and root more cuttings to create eventually a full attractive specimen. Do not know about N. tessmanii - it can be more picky. In my experience if you give them lots of natural light and let them dry between the watering they do good. I keep my A. lobbianus and nematanthus plants in hanging Oyama pots - they are too big for the light shelves and they want to trail. I think you can do it provided not to let them get too wet and root some cuttings separately just in case. Rob's plants are usually very sturdy, not that big and they can live in their pots for some time until they start toppling. He keeps them on the mats without wicks - I tried and it works, just need to keep an eye on them. Irina

This may not help a lot in fuinding a solution......
but I find that some columnea just do this. They will just drop their leaves and the stems dry out and die. Taking cuttings regularly and replanting gets around this for me.

it was the first repotting since i bought it in April. Now i wish i had potted it! :(

Your problem is a mystery to me. I have never been a great columnea grower. They need more humidity than I have in dry California, I guess. They also hate to dry out. And, they hate heavy dense soil. But 1-1-1 doesn't sound bad to me. What might work though is to increase the perlite consituant to 2 parts, or increase the perlite and sphagnum peat to two parts, thus cutting the vermiculite to a half part. Or, if you can find, coarse peat, switch to that. It will give a more open epiphytic type mix. Some people use fine bark in their mix too. But, bark will decompose and make a very fine silt like compost with time, so they need to be transplanted to new mix after a year or two. To make the best plants, root a number of cuttings and pot them together, such as ten cuttings in a five inch pot. Pinch them and let them branch to make a really full compact plant.
