Earth Day is Saturday, April 22nd

As I was putting together materials for my elementary school to make the students more aware of Earth Day and what it means, it occurred to me that adults can always use a refresher course! As avid gardeners, we have an opportunity to make decisions that have a real impact in terms of being "Earth friendly". These decisions include (but aren't limited to) the fertilizer, pesticide, & herbicide products and amounts that we use and the emissions generated by our power tools. When you make the decisions to use these things, consider the bigger impact. Do some research and consider the alternatives.

The simple message that we give to the kids is to remember the 4 R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Respect the Earth. As adults, it is up to us to show how these 4 R's can be followed.

And remember, Earth Day doesn't have to come once a day. Every Day is Earth Day.

Thanks Esh. Actually, I believe Earth Day is Sunday April 22nd. I just ordered a bunch of books for our PTA's Environmental Education committee to donate to my daughter's school's library for Earth Day. One of my favorites was called the Gift of the Tree. It reminds us beautifully of all the things one tree provides going all the way to when it breaks down and nourishes the new trees. It reminded me how important it is to leave some things a little untended. I was actually impressed with the number of wonderful books out there for kids on the subject. It was amazing how reading a couple of the books really drove home some of the points I try to make.

As important as it is for us to teach our kids I think in some cases the kids teach their parents as well, so I try to teach the neighbors' kids when the moment arrives.

Oops! I must've been looking at next year's calendar or something. You're right it is Sunday.

What a coincidence - I am the PTA Environmental Education chair for my school too (my last year, my daughter is going to middle school next year). That sounds like a great book, I will have to look into getting that. I like the part about how the tree helps even when it is breaking down!

Kids are so eager to learn and they are future adults. If we can convince them that these things are important then they will grow up with that in mind.

We celebrated Earth Day on Saturday. My kids' elementary had a garden work day. We planted trees, pulled weeds and spread mulch. It's amazing what you can accomplish in a short time with a large group of people.

So far, along with the the packets the boys took to school, we have planted hostas (about 10 of them) 2 bleeding hearts, 10 dahlia tubers, another 10 Allstar Strawberries, another type of canna tuber, marigolds (12 plants), Salvia (12 plants), Snapdragons (36 plants), Dusty Millers (36 plants), Alyssum (36 plants), wave petunias (24 plants),Lily of the Valley- 20 pink, 20 white. We have also planted marigold seeds - 4 packets (BIG packets), Cannas- two types 4 packages, Brazilian Fireworks 1 packet, Pride of Barbados 1 packet, 10 packets of Morning glories, 10 packets of perennial sweet peas, 5 packets of Forget me Nots, 10 packets of 4 o'clocks, 10 packets of Salvia, 5 packets of Lantana, 5 packets of butterfly weed, 5 packets of Ice plant. That's the count so far today. We're not finished yet, just came in to eat dinner and rest a bit. We'll work inside sowing more flats here in a little while :) Not sure how you're converting plants to packets of seeds, or how many seeds you're considering a packet. I know that a one of those marigold packets filled 2 72 count flats. But, however you're tallying it up, we've done a LOT of planting today! So, any ideas on how many carried through today? Good Friday morning!!! Donna, ((((((HUGS)))))) sorry the news isn't so great about your dad but I am glad he has mostly good days. I hope you all will be able to enjoy what time he has left and not see him in pain. I am glad he has good pain meds and that you like the oncologist. As of this morning I am looking for a new vet. I love this one and do trust her opinion and she is an excellent vet except......her bedside manner. She was over two hours late (not unusual and I understand) but she roars in jumps out and starts sticking my animals with needles! Okay, I had a few minutes to discuss my concerns over the vaccinations. She agreed to let me split them up in two visits so that the immune system wouldn't be so shocked! That just indicates to me that she is aware of the issues I am bringing up! She never took vitals - this is an annual visit mind you- and the only place she touched them was at the vaccination sites! She will be back next week to do the second half but after that I don't know what I am going to do. She just isn't warm and fuzzy around my horses and they react to her is a tense and stressed out manner. Enough said on that!! My girlfriend whose mare got her shots yesterday (all at once) is having a bad reaction and isn't eating! I hope she will be alright. The rest of the afternoon was glorious however. The weather has turned absolutely spectacular and DH and I enjoyed the afternnon outside with the animals ( I groomed because they are shedding like crazy) and our neighbor came over with out of town company to see the animals and DH brought the donkeys out for them to play with. All the while, momma fox was in the back of the field playing with her two kits AND another full grown fox was there too! We think it might be the sire as sometime the male fox will stay around to assist in the rearing of the kits but not always. Mind you this is an uneasy relationship because I have chickens that they would love. The chicks are secured however and the fox is smart enough to know she can't get them. Anyway, it was a splendid afternoon. I hope you all have a chance to check in. QOD: What's up for this weekend?

I know, I am the queen of the typos and I am always so afraid of looking like an idiot that I have to reread my posts 6 times on preview prior to posting. Many places will allow you to edit your own posts indefinitely as well as delete any thread that you create.

Esh, other great book for Env Ed at the Elementary School level are "The Wartville Wizard;" "Why Are the Ice Caps Melting?: The Dangers of Global Warming" and "The Great Trash Bash." BTW I am not the chair of the committee just on the committee and the books were my idea so the chair let me pick the books. We ordered about 16 in all. If you want the list I would be happy to email it to you.

Ok, Earth Day is today! Let's hope it's a good one and that everyone's mindset on how they deal with the environment changes just a bit. If millions of people change just a small amount, that can make a huge difference.

And for those of you that enjoy Google's special logos for special days, be sure to see what they've got for today.
