Washington DC area sources of chiritas

I am interested in chiritas and would like to buy some, I was especially intrigued by the last posting of small ones. I know there are lots of mail order sources but are there any local garden centers or nurseries in the northern Virginia, Washington DC, Maryland area that sells either chiritas or gesneriads in general? Also interested in any local chapter.

I'm not aware of any local sources, but there is a chapter of the Gesneriad Society here. The next meeting is April 14 at the national arboretum in DC. They also have a sale every 18 months or so.

Komi, are you reffering to the National Capital Area chapter of the Gesneriad Society? The reason I ask is that I have been checking their web site for the next meeting date and have not seen one.

Answer: I was at the Gotelli Collection during May of 2006 and I saw the tree being planted. It was in about a 3-5 gallon pot and approximately 5' tall. The soil it was going into was tan clay, pretty dry and also solid. Everyday they watered the tree while I was visiting, I recall. They're impressive collection does include a Taiwania cryptomeriodes at 20 or so feet. Never a cone crop yet..., here's a photo: Dax P.s. They're zone 7b. Also, Cryptomeria japonica cultivars looked like junk there except one 'Yoshino' planted in mostly shade. The others were burnt to a crisp. I don't know how organic they are or strive to be, but American Plant (formerly American Plant Food), with 2 separate locations on River Road in Bethesda, is a very nice smaller nursery and carries a good mix of ordinary and more out-of-the-ordinary plants. Garden District is good but TINY and has a fairly limited supply. They did recently open a second location just down the street, where they offer more pots and other non-plant supplies. Very much an urban nursery, but there are a lot of other interesting shops on that stretch of 14th St. so it might be worth checking out as part of a general shopping trip. Also check out Ginkgo Gardens in southeast DC, another urban nursery but a bit bigger with a surprisingly good selection of plants and supplies. Just a few blocks away, Frager's Hardware has a good selection of plants & gardening supplies. Both are just a few blocks from Eastern Market and worth a visit on a nice Sunday morning in the spring. Outside the city Behnkes, with 3 locations in Maryland, is one of the biggest local nurseries and a great source of gardening supplies and plants of all kinds, including trees and shrubs. However, despite their huge selection of plants I've had trouble finding anything there that is especially unusual in recent years.

Tall sabal palms in Washington DC

I know this is probably a dead thread now, but google street view for the building was done on May of 2011 - the sabal on the left was fully dead, the one on the right actually had 2 small new green leaves growing. That said the last 2 (and especially this winter of 2014) have been horridly cold, coldest since 1994, and surely any unprotected palm of most any species (except a well placed and established windmill or dwarf) is at best damaged and sabals are probably dead by now :(.

Yep, my relatives told me 1985 was so cold that every last oleander in SE VA was killed to the ground. Still I doubt it was ever as palmy there as it is now. They are friends w/a retired local landscaper who was friends with Fred Huette (sp?) and I've read his book. I barely remember much but it implies many of those kind of things were considered experimental even back in the 60s. Back in the early 1990s he once literally took us on a drive to see a _couple_ Trachys he know about _in the entire VA Beach area_! They were very uncommon. There was also a Chamaerops in an alcove in Williamsburg (not at the excellent Dewitt Wallace garden, which is now gallery space) but I never saw it after 1994 and I'd doubt it is still there. I personally think it's been a kind of internet "crowd sourcing" since the late 1990s. I think that even though the various hardiness zone maps, even going back to the Harvard one (the very first) have grouped VA Beach's zone with the interior gulf south, most nurseries there had a long history of telling people "oh no, we are colder, you can't grow those windmill palms" etc. Back in the mid 90s, there were only a couple nurseries that would even sell those. I bet the few people who had pindos back then had to get them on the outer banks. Then people started to altavista, then google "palms in virginia beach" and probably found reports of how well they can do. Now all of these are offered by almost every nursery in the area. yes, that's them. I don't know why the website is never updated. I get info from a friend, though actually I've never been to a meeting (only the sales).

I just looked up the details:

Despite their new popularity Chiritas are still not widely available except from specialty (which usually means mail-order) nurseries. I have seen VERY limited offerings of gesneriads at nurseries in the DC area--you might try Behnke's in Beltsville, MD, where I've seen a smattering of Columnea, Nematanthus & Streptocarpus, (but never Chirita).

But your best bet is still membership in a local chapter, which will usually get you access to many new, rare, or otherwise hard-to-find gesneriads. Speaking of which, I am the membership chair of the Washington, DC chapter. Feel free to send me a private message with your home and/or email address and I will make sure you get a copy of the newsletter. There is a meeting at the arboretum on Saturday, April 14, at 10:30 am in the administration building; there is usually a good assortment of plants for swap, raffle and/or sale at meetings. This month's speakers are Dee (not Lee) & Bob Stewart, visiting from the New England chapter, who are phenomenal growers with eclectic tastes and will almost certainly bring a few interesting plants to sell or give away. Several chapter members also grow chiritas and there are usually a few available at meetings. (Sorry about the out-of-date chapter website, there has been talk about giving it a major overhaul.)

Brennan's in Mt. Jackson, Va. has them, along with some other rare beauties. It's only a couple hours drive from D.C. area, and a lovely one at that. Brennan's have some on eBay about to go off now, if you're interested. Good luck.

Well, the meeting was good and there were Chiritas on the raffle table (and more than enough plants for anyone who wanted some) and there is prep work going on for updating the website, as John mentioned. Glad I went because I came home with a few plants that have been on my wish list for a while.

There is a local flower show and sale coming up, and there should be chiritas and many other gesneriads available as well as african violets. Quoting from the email I received:

"The Baltimore African Violet Club will hold their annual MotherÂs Day Show and Sale at the Harford Mall on Bel Air Road in Bel Air, Maryland on Friday, May 11, 10am-9:30pm (Show will not open until 2pm after judging is completed, Sale will open at 10am) and Saturday, May 12, 10am-5pm (both show & sale).

"Hundreds of beautiful African violets and other exotic houseplants will be offered for sale. The sale will also feature leaves, cuttings, and many growing supplies including soil mix, plant rings, self-watering pots and much more. This event is free to the public."
