jatropha question

I found an 8-inch volunteer Jatropha in the hedge. It's the split leaf kind - the leaves look a lot like marijuana. (Don't ask me how I know that.)

The flowers are clearly Jatropha, however.

I moved it into full sun and it has grown straight up, without a branch. Now, it's a pretty funny-looking four-foot stick in the ground with a floret of marijuana-looking leaves and one, at the most two flower stalks at the top.

Question is: if I lop off the floret of leaves and flowers at the top, will it branch and become a little tree? Or will that kill it? Or is there a better way to make it branch into a little tree.

The stick in the ground is not pretty, so I'm willing to risk killing it. But figured I should check for advice first.

Ideas?
