How do I keep my lawn green in winter?
Comments (14)What??? bpgreen??? What are you doing here???? Not that you're not welcome, but I thought you dropped off into the Salt Lake. Welcome back, guy!! bpgreen is right (as usual). Overseeding with rye does work to keep the lawn green, but it can severely hurt the ability of the bermuda to return in the spring. Jaime we don't care what zone you're in, Phoenix is what we need to know. But we do need to know what kind of grass you have. I don't want to get into a discussion of 'if you have this then do that' for all the possible grasses you might have. Also how have you been caring for the grass up to now? What is your watering schedule, how high/low do you mow, and how often do you fertilize?...See MoreIn SK, can I plant my 'over-wintered' geraniums now?
Comments (4)I'm far from an expert, but here's my two cents worth =:) Gardening, in my opinion, is an experiment in which no two situations are alike. Just because something will work for me in my yard, doesn't guarantee it will work in yours. You, of course, know that. Having said that, if you're "itching" go for it! Plant half of what you're wanting to now and half later. It is a bit early, but what harm can it do? If it works, that's great, and if it doesn't you'll know better next time. I think there's threads here you could research, although I find it's hard to get much info for Saskatchewan growing conditions. It seems a lot of people on this forum are lucky enough to live in warmer places. I've tried to overwinter geraniums the same way a seasoned gardener friend has for years, and all mine died. Good luck! =:)...See MoreCan I keep a Silver Maple seedling growing over winter in the house?
Comments (3)And it must go through dormancy. Unless you follow Mike's advice (which I would do as well - plant now), I'd leave it outside until it drops its leaves and then you can bring in over winter but not in a warm, sunny window. Somewhere where the temps won't exceed 40-45F and doesn't drop much below freezing. And when dormant, light is not an issue....See MoreWhat temperature should I keep my citrus greenhouse over winter?
Comments (19)Suzuchan, I grow my trees inside a greenhouse, and no I don't light my trees 24/7. Citrus trees, in fact all trees, use sunlight, carbon dioxide from the air, and water from the roots to produce carbohydrates (sugars/starch) during the day light period. Then at night, the tree breaks down the carbohydrates that were manufactured from the previous days buildup, and metabolizes (uses) the sugars as their food source (energy). Therefore, citrus trees require dark periods to do this. Interestingly, no matter how long, or short the dark period is, the tree will always consume 95 percent of the sugars produced the preceding day. For example, when equal day and night periods exist (12 hours each), the tree will use up 95 percent of the carbonates made the previous day and leave 5 percent unused. The same will be true on a 8 hour day and 16 hour night, the tree will still only use up 95 percent of the previous days carbohydrates and leave 5 percent unused. With in reason, no matter what the daylight/dark ratio is this equation will remain the same, always 95 percent and 5 percent. I light my trees from dusk to 10:00PM every night during the winter months. Doing so produces more tree growth, thus more fruit. - Silica...See MorePatty zone 5
