The basic premise is the same it seems. Keep the bottoms moist, keep the tops from drying out. Do you have better luck now that you have a cover?

I have never used a heater in mine as I usually only use it in the greenhouse in the spring and outside in the summer. If I was to use it now under lights I would definitely put one in. Yes the cover is a great help, don't have to mist ever. A

Thanks. Mine is in the basement, so I need a heater. Otherwise, the water would be at 50-60 degrees. I was using bottom heat with the propagation chamber method too.

Now, if I could just find some little cups to fit in those little holes. LOL

Mmmm, let's all put our heads together and see if we can come up with some ideas, would cutting squares of plastic netting like the kind you buy onions, bulbs in work? Wrap the square of netting around a dowel or something similar push through the holes leaving a bit out. When you want to remove the cutting just give a little tug on the netting and out it comes.

I've got small squares of a plastic placemat right now. I drilled a tiny hole in the center and cut a slit from the edge to the hole. I put a few cuttings in it tonight just because I'm curious to see if it will work. Probably not the best time to be taking cuttings, but it's been in the 60s all week and we've had a lot of rain. The only problem is that some of the cuttings want to flop over. I guess that's not a big deal, but I want them sticking straight up. LOL.

Wow - Annette - you've been holding back!!! lol. So, forgive me for being slow but - The table thingie goes inside the grey/white tub, with the sprayer underneath, the the dome goes over the top?? Have I got this correctly?? Then, how often does the sprayer come on? Once a day?

Token, my neighbour dumped 3 garbage bags of the type of pots Annette has at the roadside, and I of course, had to rescue them......then it slowly dawned on me what possible use they might have had in the past...lol. Slow learner. So, thinking about their dimensions, how about plastic beer cups - they're about the same size, maybe?? You could slit the sides with a razor.

Also, what temp would you keep at the bottom?? I am thinking as well about the shoebox set up in your first post about this type of thing. That would be easy to handle on my own - not sure how big Annette's outfit is, but I'll bet it would be hard to move when full. So, back to the shoe box, or some such thing - it was filled with vermiculite and sand(I think), with the clay pot, with the sealed bottom hole, kept full of water......I was thinking this am, I wonder if you could use the new(OK, to me) gel medium in the shoebox, and would that keep moisture better than the 1st scenario.

OK, so here is what I have been trying to design in my mind: a counter top type planter, with bottom heat, and a moisture dome over top. It could be for seeds or cuttings/slips. I have a bit of experience with radiant heat in floors - I put this into my downstairs bathroom in the old house, and wished that I'd done it throughout. I would/could use these mats( you can buy different sizes) at the base of the counter, with a wet barrier, and it runs on a thermostat.

I think Annette's unit only needs a few inches of water. After doing some quick calculations, mine weighs over 100lbs full. SO...I'm switching to a different tote that my lid fits, but is only 6" tall. The aquarium heater in mine keeps the temperature at 78 degrees. The holes on my unit are smaller than hers too. I made mine myself, and I wanted to get as many cuttings as possible without damaging the roots when I remove it. I wish I had thought about putting more than 1 cutting per hole. I could have used the regular sized cups. Eh, it's all about experimenting.

Nancy - yes, yes and yes, correct, it sprays continually. My little pots are about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. If the bottom of your container is flat you could sit it on one of those black heating mats sold for around $20. Mine you put in place before filling,wouldn't try lifting it full of water my unit is about 14 x 14 x 12 inches deep. A
