Your geraniums are not unlike any other plant, they can be cut back, pruned if you will, the same as most plants can be cut back and encouraged to grow new foliage and bloom --if that is part of their make-up. Now's the time to do it...when the sun is low in itensity, it brings plants along slow, without encouraging too much growth, more intent to keep it alive, set roots, get healthy; then when the sunlight is higher...toward April, May and June, then the plant can be allowed to take off. Food can be given when foliage resumes according to its needs; a little at first, graduating to a full measure as the foliage dictates. If the geranium has a soil medium, then simply cut it back as you see fit....but 4", 6", 8", you decide how the plant merits. You have noticed after you took a cutting, they seem to be doing OK, and that is a way to have more plants, let the geranium be the 'mother' plant and take as many cuttings as you see fit. Take only healthy tissue...never take a cutting from a sick plant. Parts that seem brown, dry, or listless, cut it out, throw it away--you don't want that to do damage to the healthy cuttings. When in pots, always water to drainage, making sure the plant drains in a relatively good time....if it doesn't, it probably needs a soil change, its maybe compact and not using the water you give it. When it drains, let it sit in that water no more than 10 minutes, then dispose of. The plant should be allowed to dry down a bit between waterings and when you water, always water to drainage, then dump the excess.

serg... if you looked at the posts in this forum ... you should feel very lucky.. that lucky happened to stroll thru to answer your question ... as there hasnt been much other activity for months ... you might want to try the perennial forum ... for other ideas.. more suited to your zone ... in my z5 MI .. they HAVE TO BE brought in for winter ... as perhaps you already did ... i never got one to live indoors ... so i wont be any help ... lol .. usually they got so ugly by mid winter.. i put them out of my misery .... and chucked them out the back door into 3 feet of snow .... i am telling you this.. so you can prep girlfriend as to what it might end up looking like ... rather than blame you.. for not loving it enough .... one thing for sure.. it will not 'thrive' over winter... indoors... all you are trying to do.. is get it to live.. so you can juice it.. come next spring .... and i would NOT fert it ... in a semi-dormant situation ....but see above.. lol ken

Although they're not native to me I grow a little pot filled with hosta, fern, and blue geranium in full shade. It started blooming a month ago and looks lovely in that dark corner. I also grow them under blackberry with varegated Solomon's seal. Those only get winter sun so no flowers. But the leaves are evergreen here so its green in the winter when the berries and Solomon are gone. These geranium would grow under your ferns as they don't get tall so I think a spot where you can enjoy them is best.

So, no sun at all, even in the morning or late afternoon? It's a tricky situation, especially with dry soil as well. You may find that some things that would survive there after establishment are going to need watering for the first couple of years. I'd also be careful about that heavy mulch -- it's usually better to keep it pulled back from plant stems, or they can be more susceptible to rot and insect damage. There are some wood asters that do well in dry shade, although they pretty much all have a rather floppy form when in flower. I've seen some nice combinations of white wood aster (Eurybia divaricata, sometimes labeled Aster divaricatus) and ferns. The ferns provide structure and the wood aster rambles around in between them. Most ferns like more moisture, though, and are slow to fill in. I'm trying to get Christmas fern going in my dry shade areas, but it's too soon to tell whether it will survive in the long term. Another suggestion might be Geum fragarioides (used to be Waldsteinia), barren strawberry. It's a groundcover with tiny yellow flowers, looks really nice spread out around taller plants. Mine has been slow to establish, but I have high hopes for it.
