Anyone found a daylily that matches the rose Knock Out?

I'm looking for either a solid colored daylily the color of Knock Out or maybe a cream color with the center the color of Knock Out.

I just planted white daylilies around Knock Out, but I was thinking of adding a different, complimentary daylily to the tier below it.

Well I just got back from a trip to Marietta Gardens, where I picked up this one, and it is gorgeous in person!

I paid ten dollars for it, I think it would look stunning next to your knockout rose! Hope you like it! It is soo pretty in a clump, and very bright, I saw it from across the field and went right over to it and thought I Have to have it! -Jessica

Laurie, look at the first dl in Janepa's thread, "Broken Heart". I don't personally grow this one, but when I read your question, this photo popped in my head. Maybe Jane could give you some stats on it.

Ok - I am between DC and Baltimore. Zone 7. I usually do go to the local nurseries to buy, but since I want to get a number of them - 4 or 6 - I thought maybe I would do better buying them from a mail order place where they might be less expensive....(?) I am totally renovating the landscaping at a house we moved into last winter. The 4 I'm looking for are for the front yard, and the 2 extra for front steps containers. The backyard has never been anything but yuck(!) - no grass, no landscaping - just ill-placed gazebo, shed and playground equipment. We got rid of all that last fall and started a lawn. This year I get to do all new design and landscaping, and I am so excited. Eventually I'll have a place for KO's in the back, too. Thanks for any advice Miss Mary

The first virus may make it easier for the rose rosette virus to overcome the immune system. This is a quote from research titled: "Fate of artificial microRNA-mediated resistance to plant 1 viruses in mixed infections" "However, when the plants were pre-infected with these viruses, TuMV was able to co31 infect 12-4 plants pre-infected with TRV, CaMV, and, particularly, with CMV. I'm a pretty lazy gardener, truth be told. Half my roses have damage that looks like that, covering a third to a half of the bush/plant. Nobody angsts over it but me... Hubs could care less. Visitors look at the flowers and the redwoods and say "ooooh, pretty!" and never notice the foliage damage. As many times as I have looked (a lot), I have yet to find more than 2 culprits, so I gave up. As long as my bushes are still growing, I can live with some unsightly leaves. I don't like it, but I can tolerate it.

In my border "Knock Outs" on the back for screening purpose with about 5-6 ft distance. They are 3 years old, every year I cut them back to 2-3 ft high to the ground, they reach 6x6 by the end of summer. In front of the border I planted "Blushing Knock Out"s, mixed with perennial such as salvia, daylilies, irises, lavender + some low growing annuals in white, yellow and blue tones. This border is about 45 foot long by 8-12 ft wide runs along my driveway. I do not have water source near by, so the plants receive only occasional watering + rain. Despite that they thrive and bloom non-stop. As it seems you have limited space I would just mix "Pink Knock Out"s and "Knock Out"s , as they have similar size and form, in one row + plant some lower growing perennials and annuals in front of the row. You can add "Happy Returns" lilies , they look good together. If you plan roses 3-4 ft apart they will form solid hedge probably in 4-5 years. In you zone you should not have much of winter kill. I am about 200 miles south of you, my "KO" do not suffer from winter at all. I also would advise you reasonably priced, quality sours for "Knock Outs" mail Order nursery from Texas "Chamblee's Roses" . They are absolutely wonderful, knowledgeable people. Their roses are under 10 dollars and they charge actual shipping. Over 60% Roses in my garden came from them, all of them doing great; e-mail me if you have more questions about roses. Thanks for the suggestions. So far, I like Victoria Grace and Broken Heart the best, but they're both dormants. I typically try to avoid dormants, but so far Stella is doing okay here so that might not be a problem. Just a Stitch, on the other hand, is a semi-evergreen.

As another zone 8 Texan, it's been my experience that dormant isn't necessarily an issue for us. Some daylilies do better for us than others, but dormancy isn't a reliable indicator of which those will be. Some of my toughest and most productive daylilies are dormants (Golden Prize, Ice Carnival, Mini Pearl, for example).

I stopped worrying about dormancy when I noticed how many of Jack Carpenter's introductions are dormants. Go with what makes your heart sing. If it sulks, there are thousands more waiting to be tried.

I've had WOODSIDE RUBY for about a year and was very impressed with it this season. You might check the pictures at Tinker's and see if the color is close enough for you.

Jane - Out of the ones you mentioned, which one is the darkest color? Is the center of Broken Heart the color of Knock Out?

While looking up pictures of the ones y'all suggested, I came across Cherry Valentine. Does anyone know if it's close to the color of Knock Out.

Coming Up Roses is a deeper rose red color when it first opens and lightens a bit as you can see in the photo. Queen Cerise is a real rich rose red with shading on the sepals. I think this one is the best match in color, especially since Knockout can have some shading, too.
Rose Masterpiece will make the biggest 'statement', and its color is also deeper when first open. I think all three are in the color family you are after, and would look great with Knockout.

I will check out another bloom on Broken Heart and see what shade the eye actually is here. On Tinker's there is one photo that I think would be the eye color you are after, but the other two photos definitely look red, and I would not like it with Knockout.

I have some that should be opening tomorrow that might work. I will let you know.

I found several pictures of Woodside Ruby at Dave's Garden. Which color is more accurate for you? If it's the pinkish tone, then that might work.

Hi Laurie,
I think pictures 2, 3 & 5 are in indirect light and 1 and 4 are in direct sunlight. It normally appears like 2, 3 & 5 to me, but in the hot, midday sun, it might look like 1 and 4.
