Amazing discovery for Zonal geranium cuttings

After many years of growing zonal geraniums from cuttings I made an amazing discovery. I took my cuttings as usual and laid them out on newspaper on my spare room floor to callus over for 5 days. Actually I forgot about them and they stayed there for a week.

I planted them using pro mix and rooting compound as usual. When I went to put them under the lights without rearranging things the only space was on the heating mat where I was starting seeds. Well I placed them there thinking I'd rearrange them later. They seemed to be doing OK on the mat so I just left them there. They did need a bit more watering but that was no problem.

To my amazement all 24 cuttings took and started sending out new growth. I never lost one cutting. When thinking about it fungal diseases like cold and wet and that bit of warmth kept the fungal disease blackleg away. So from now on that's the way I will do them.

It's never to late to teach an old dog new tricks. That's one of the things I like about gardening. No matter how long you are at it you can always learn new things or ways of doing them.

I also learned recently that heat helps with rooting cuttings, more specifically begonias, but it makes sense that it is probably better for just about any cutting.

The laying out to callus is a new one to me. What is the purpose of that? Doesn't any leaf completely wilt in 5 days? Or are these not leaf/stem tip cuttings?

I now root everything in a 50/50 vermiculite/pearlite mix, in domed containers, and have much better luck than in any kind of soil that I have tried.

Yes mandolis-- they are cutting from the growing tips of mature geraniums. The purpose of laying them out to callus over is to partly seal the end so the cutting can't take up as much moisture. It gets enough to send out roots but not excess moisture which can cause blackleg in geranium cuttings.

The leaves do wilt but at least some of the leaves on each cutting perk up once they are planted. I learned this trick from an expert gardener and it really works. I've been at this for years.

The first few years I ever did I didn't callus them over and I lost about half every time. Then I learned the trick of callusing them over and it cut down dramatically on my losses but I still lost a few. This year combined with lessons of the past I think I've finally found the secret of not losing any

Will give the thread a bump, but it is timely. I'm no expert, but a clematis might do ok, would ask before I'd buy one. Don't know about sweet potato vine. In general, from personal observation, vines don't like hot brick. Euyonomous grew up the entire chimney of the house across the street, facing west, before they finally took it out. My sweet peas weren't real happy in front of a brick stoop last year. I have an invasive one I've fought for years, and it does not grow, or very little, where there is full sun. It's the worst on the east and covered the whole north side of my garage before I had a girl tear it off. Morning glories are more tolerant, I think, but I had some get wilty in the worst heat last summer, watered them, and they bounced right back.

Good luck with that repotting! Send us some "after" pics too. Those cigar flowers (Cuphea ignea) are great. I first started growing them when I worked just for fun at Tera's Garden nursery (now closed--I think it's an Italian restaurant these days) a few years ago. We had them in the inferno of a parking strip in full bore sun and they did great with just minimal irrigation. Easy from seed, easy from cuttings, and fully hardy here too. Several seed places are selling various cultivars with white, pink, or screaming red flowers; many of them are dwarf too. I really like them. I have some obscure Euphorbia seed to start this weekend, plus a few more aloes and cacti too. I love this time of year, even though it means the windowsills are very, VERY crowded. I noticed some of the datura seeds I planted outside in autumn are sprouting now too. This winter was so mild that the mother plant didn't even drop her leaves; some years she gets cut to the ground to resprout from the roots. Take care all, Grant

Marg, The seeds for the reds I got from a trade. They are still quite small, and if they make it through this winter, I'll be surprised. I'll be keeping them in the holding bed over the winter with a good mulch. Since I got them from a trade, I'm waiting to see if they come true to put them in the ground so it might be next year by the time I do that. I'm surprised that your Buddleias don't make it. Do you wait long enough to determine they haven't made it through? Mine sometimes only surface in early June, but then they catch-up quickly. They are late risers. Bonnie, I instinctively knew I had that zonal thing wrong, but went against my better judgement. :O) Thanks for the correction. Appreciate it! My tops die back too, but last year one didn't. I let it grow. It went to 12 to 14 feet and was HUGE. But that's the last time I won't trim back. Out of 4 mature ones I have, it's THE one that died this past winter. One which is only 1.5 feet away is doing fine. Sorry to hear that you lost yours this past winter. I'll definitely have some seeds of the lavender if you want some. You too Marg! Would be nice to get seeds of that new one - you know the bi-colored one?!

Well I got an answer from Robin Parer of the nursery Geraniaceae in Marin Co CA. Robin is maybe the most distinguished geraniophile in the US and her nursery has the goal of selling most if not all of the hardy geraniums available, as well as quite a few erodiums and scented pelargoniums. She is extremely knowledgeable and has great plants which may well be impossible to find elsewhere in the US (especially now that Heronsood is no longer). Robin says that this hybrid selection is a cross of G. incanum and robustum, both from S Africa, with robutum from a much colder area. She said she doubts that this plant will be hardy in anything colder than z 8 (which obviously leaves me, well, "out in the cold"). I called the nursery where I bought the 2 plants and talked to the perennials manager. She seemed very non-plused and didn't seem to care much. But they do guarantee all their plants for a year, including overwintering. So I think I will probably keep them, maybe even propagate some, and I can always get my money back next year when they will probably croak over the winter outside. Interesting to me that the nursery didn't seem to care that the plant was mislabelled as to parentage and obviously is not a very cold hardy geranium. And it's normally a pretty good nursery too. Robin says that this propagates easily from stem cuttings too like most S. African geraniums. And yes, of course, I have grown Spinners and Brookside and lots of forms of G. sanguineum as well as dozens of other geraniums for years. Thank you for explaining that. I am new to trying to propagate geraniums. I have a small group that I grew from seed this year, which is why I am doing some reading on this forum. I have made cuttings from a scented geranium with good results, but they may be the only geranium cuttings I have taken. The 4 zonals I wintered over for the past couple of years have been doing well (they are all blooming right now !) So my interest in them in general is rising.

Zonal geraniums are bushy plants, mainly used for containers and bedding. There has been considerable breeding done, particularly for size and abundance and colors of flowers, so there is a good deal of variety.
