Brick Path Completed

A while ago I posted that I would show a picture of my brick path project once it was done. Today I finally finished it!

The style is modelled after English styled gardens I saw in Europe. The circle will eventually have a sundial in the center with low potted flowers aroound the base.

Around the circle I'm going to plant Lavandula munstead.

What I've done to the garden before the path was installed:

Removed all the old edging (large rotting wooden poles), removed a cemented in birdhouse pole, moved a Magnolia bush to another part of the yard, and expanded the garden size.

I'm going to add a gravelled sitting area just off the circle this weekend.

Come Spring I'm going to start adding herbs, bean poles, more boxwoods along the border, and anything else that strikes my fancy. I've got all winter to plan!

It's wonderful! You did a great job, it looks very even and level and is a nice design. I can picture exactly what you're going to do with it.

Every time I look at these pics I am amazed at the difference. I feel like I'm living in a different house. We spend a lot of time sitting out in the front yard now. Several times we've had people slow down their cars to shout out compliments on the house. We managed to get some plants off of freecycle, but they weren't dug up very well and they seems to be suffering a bit of shock from transplanting. Hopefully they will make it through. I especially like the rose campion. We also received some poppies, dianthus, tickweed and some unidentified plants. There was a sale at a local greenhouse 2 weeks ago so we brought home foxglove, dwarf delphiniums, bellflower, bee balm, coneflower and lavender. There is still a ton of space to be filled up, but it's a start. I'm hoping to scatter in a small groupings of bulbs in the fall. The wall shouldn't take long but the flower boxes are slow going. Lots of pieces that need sanding and staining. Thanks to everyone for looking a my pics. The comments are a great motivator!

The path is gorgeous -- as are all your wonderful projects! And thanks for letting us know how you are doing after surgery. Keep us posted. It's wonderful how the body will heal after major surgery and positive thoughts. I'm sure happy with the new knee I got a year ago. And Bob, my mulch guy, is happy not having to do the watering although he was a sweet heart and did the best he could when he had to do it :-)

I know it's late, but if you haven't done this yet, I would suggest considering planting along the edges and let it spill onto the path rather than in the path. The plants are a trip/slip hazard, and snow removal on a path that has plants in it will be a pain and may kill the plants. With plants spilling onto the path, in the fall, trim them back to the edge and then snow removal won't be an issue. Perhaps it's my age, but I am becoming more careful about trip hazards since I am often carrying something that prevents me seeing where my feet are.

As far as your paper plan goes, it is fine. But there are flaws in your steps and order of work. I take it that the current walk is 4' width ...? If not, you'll need to construct some new base under that portion. That will be a little messy in the doing, trying to keep dirt out of the existing base, but not impossible. You'll want the base to extend about 6" beyond the finished paver field in all directions, so you might have some base build anyway. Once you get to the point of a tamped base, you'll be ready to screed out the 1/2" of sand. (It can be paver base sand or "play" sand, which is a little easier as it is uniform small bits.) You have to guess the amount of compression that will occur once the pavers are tamped into the sand. You might be setting them 1/2" higher so when they're tamped they end up in the right place. (I usually set 3/4" higher but that's with 2 or more times the setting bed thickness you have.) You'll just have to play with it/experiment to get the setting bed thickness right. Then set all the pavers on the untamped, screeded setting bed until the field and border is complete (including any pavers that need cutting.) Install the plastic edge restraint. It will go at the outside of the paver, set a little lower (according to mfg. directions. I usually use 'old school,' hand-formed concrete edge restraint but it takes a little work with it to get the knack. If not installed correctly, which is easy, it is predisposed to fail. Otherwise, it's great.) Once the edge restraint is securely in place, you can tamp all the pavers down hard, increasing in firmness after the first pass. You'll need a steel tamper, which they sell at Tractor Supply if you have any by you. It would be much harder, impractical to tamp with a mallet. Once tamped and they all look smooth within the field, add masonry sand (or whatever you have) to sweep into the joints and tamp some more. After the joints seem filled, wet everything and tamp some more. When the joints are all filled and it won't compress any more, you are done.

Heather: It looks wonderful! I can see it surrounded by beautiful gardens with plants spilling over onto the path. What a great job you did. I love the circle area of the path on the left. Can't wait to see photos in the spring!

Beautiful! I've been planning a grass path, but I'd love to do a brick path like that! Maybe someday time and budget will come together...

Beautiful Job! I have a brick path too so I know just how much blood, sweat and tears you've put into it. I had to dig my bricks out of the side of a bank with a screw driver so maybe you didn't have as much blood as I did LOL!

Thanks eveyone. Most of the brick was dug up from projects created from our house's previous owner. The rest was bought at a used building supply yard. It's a lot cheaper getting brick that way.

I will be sure to post pictures after next Spring so you all can see how it's moving along.

I think you did an awesome job! Your path looks very welcoming. Believe me, I know just what you went through building it! As I'm typing, right this very minute my husband is working on ours in the back yard. We have an agreement...he builds things and I do all the planting...that works for us. He's never allowed to touch any plants. Poor guy can't tell a flower from a weed and I think he's a bit color blind too. LOL! Anyway, I just wanted to tell you that I admire your hard work. Thanks for letting us see!

What a wonderful looking path. I LOVE brick work. It must have been such hard work too. It does look gorgeous! I can't wait to see it after the planting is done and they grow and fill in. It is really beautiful!

how I envy you! It really looks great.I wanted a path conecting two of my corner beds.So I waited for big junk day anD went stroLling for bricks.Of course I went at night,I don't mind taking used discarted bricks as long as no one sees me>>hahaha.I did get lots of brick and lots of cement flats.But my dh was not thrilled with my taking over yet another chunk of his "grass beds".So I built a knee wall along my longest bed.While do love it, I WANT A BRICK PATH.Happy Planning
