Gardenia essential oil, where to find?

Love Gardenia, but they bloom only once per year. I have tried many Gardenia perfume and oil, some come close, but most of them are just not right. Does anyone have come cross a good one? Please share.

I read somewhere that it is impossible to distil gardenia fragrance. I have tried every "gardenia" scented candle, potpourri, lotion, etc. Nothing comes close to the real thing. Maybe that's part of it's magic.

I found "Elariia" brand sold at Home Shopping Network (some on-line shop also) is very closed to real thing. Still, looking for the perfect one.

Never used it. Never intend to - I don't find the mugwort plant all that appealing in fragrance. I'm not familiar with if it is or isn't toxic - I'm sure google has lots to say. But I think I'd pass on using something toxic even if diluted on my skin as a perfume. There are too many other beautiful and safe scents. FataMorgana

at the greenhouse in our school, the gardening teacher got her hands on a essential oil distiller. It costs about $350, and I lust after it. It looks like a small pressure cooker, with a main pot and a valve that looks like the steam valve on a commercial espresso maker. She filled it up with fresh rosemary, about 6 or 8 cups it looked like, of fresh herb, and put it on the fire. She got a small, medicinal bottle of fabulous essential oil. Did I mention I WANT one? I don't know where you would get one in the States, but as far as I'm concerned, it's the ultimate wish-list toy. Clip herbs, fill it up, light the fire, and Bob's yer uncle. Batya

Hi 2meforester! I understand your physical limitations--I have rheumatoid arthritis. I'm doing a complete gut of the eat-in kitchen of the house I just bought, and ease of access is critical in my planning. Not just what is accessible today, but also looking 5, 10, 15 years out. I'm also a fan of having as close to nothing as possible on my countertops; it's simply a style/taste preference for me. The eat in kitchen and living room are one big open space, and that is about half my house. My house is a single wide manufactured home, so picture a big rectangle. The "great room" is the middle. Each end is bedrooms, bathrooms, and on one end is also laundry area. So when you walk into my house, bam! you're in the living room, but the dinette and kitchen are right there too. I hate clutter with a passion. I want the focus of my home to be the beauty of the interior design rather than the dish rack, the popcorn tin, and several small kitchen appliances that are sitting on the counters. There's nothing wrong with any of those things! It's purely a matter of personal preference. I occasionally help a realtor friend of mine stage houses, and just like your magazine photos, the first thing we do is de-clutter. Potential buyers can't picture themselves in your house if all your stuff is everywhere. It's all very minimalist. But as sushipup1 so rightly pointed out, most people don't actually live that way. Herbflavor pointed out how some warm, inviting things on the counters can make a house a home. But, as I said, I personally prefer clean counter space. For one, I have very, very little of it. Anything sitting on it is taking away space I need to prep and cook. Second, because it's such a tiny space, even a couple things sitting out make it look cluttered or messy. So here's a couple of things I'm planning to do. One, do a hood/microwave combo over the range. Microwaves take up a fair bit of counter space. Two, no base cabinets, all base drawers of various sizes, except the corner one. That will be a cabinet with a super susan. Drawers are so much easier to see what's in there and pull it out. No more crouching over with a flashlight and a yardstick trying to get something from the way back of the cabinet, haha! Three, I'm getting a farmhouse sink. Because they're totally cool, sure, but also because you don't have to lean over counter space to do anything in the sink; you can just belly up to it. That might be easier on your arms...just a thought. Four, I'm a sucker for drawer organizing systems. I'm doing an IKEA kitchen, but even if you're not, go on their website and look at all their cool drawer organizers. Besides flatware and knife inserts, they have things so you can keep all your spices in a drawer, plate stackers, etc. Also go on KitchenMaid's website; they have amazing kitchen organizers!! Five, I'm getting a portable dishwasher. This won't work for everyone. Because it's an eat-in kitchen, I actually have a space to "park" it unobtrusively when not in use. This means I get a whole other base cabinet drawers! Also, the one I'm getting intentionally has a butcher block top, creating a small but valuable food prep station! Last, You can also get cool pull out organizers for all your cleaning products; they're easy to pull out and then you're not trying to dig into a bucket under the sink. So, by creating as much useable space as possible, I can be totally, 100% organized in my drawers and cupboards and thus, don't need anything on my counters, with the exception of a shiny SS tea kettle on my cooktop, and maybe, maybe a coffee pot, if I find the perfect one. Oh, just to weigh in, other than toilet paper, I haven't used paper products in a couple of years. Microfiber cloths, cloth napkins, and handkerchiefs. And wash cloths and towels in the kitchen. :-) Hope this helps!

I have found that the Gardenia candle from Home Interiors does smell close - and all the Yankee candles smell heavenly, but i do not know if they have a Gardenia scent.
Also - David - i don't know what type of gardenia you have, versus what i have, but mine bloom off and on all year long...outdoors...5 feet tall....we like to call it "Angel Fertilizer" b/c these were some that my Mama rooted - she died in 2001. But, I kid you not - i have had blooms in Decmeber! And it does bloom off and on all year - spring through fall mostly.

I know this is an old thread, but if anyone is still looking, a product called Monoi de Tahiti oil is supposed to be scented with Tahitian gardenia flowers. When I contacted the company to ask, I was told that the scent is all natural and the oil has no synthetic perfume oils in it. The "Tiare" scent is the one you want for the gardenia fragrance.

The stuff is fantastic for hair and skin too.

Like Bewitch, I've also read that it is impossible to extract or distil the gardenia fragrance. Don't know why, though. But that explains why nothing smells like the real thing. I know, bummer.

I wish they bloomed continuously. But, as Bewitch also suggests--maybe they would lose some of their allure if we could enjoy them that often?

This is an old thread but I just had to post as I've seen the comment on the monoi oil. Maybe that oil isn't that natural smelling at all. There's a scented and an unscented one. It's true that monoi is composed of tahitian tiare flowers soaked in coconut oil, BUT to have a strong scented oil gardenia oil like that of monoi, a ton of Tiare flowers may need to be used. As an example, It takes hundreds of strongly scented jasmine and rose flowers to have only a few ml of essential oil and that cost and arm and a leg. If that would be the case then scented monoi would cost a lot more than it actually cost. The scented monoi is enhanced with fragrance. My Tiare flowers doesn't smell like the monoi oil I have here, so don't expect the scent of true Tiare flowers to be like the scent of Monoi. Also there are plumeria, sandalwood and pikake scented monoi and it still have natural Tiare extract BUT not it's scent.

Also, there's no natural Gardenia jasminoides essential oil, just natural or synthetic aromatic compositions.

Thanks Juan for the info. Have you ever smelled any of the oils from Tahait-Iti Imnports or have you ever purchased from them? In my opinion as long as it smells true to the flower I don't really mind if it's enhanced with fragrance. I ordered from them last week and I will stop back on this thread to let you know how the Monoi de Tahiti smells when I receive it.

No I haven't buyed from that company, but I buy Tahitian Monoi oil for soap and toiletry making. You are right, IMHO I don't mind buying a synthetic fragrance as long as it smells true to the flowers I grow in my garden. Sometimes I made the blends myself as I almost never like the synthetics oils I get. So far the Monoi oils I've tried smells gorgeous, but not like the true scent of a Tiare Blossom. I have a Gardenia and a Tiare Blend that I made for my handmade soap, candles and other toiletries that smells just like the flower (or at least as close I could get).

You can buy Pure and Natural Gardenia Essential oil from www.herbalveda.co.uk.

They have the Pure oil at very reasonable price. I have tried it.
