companion plant for gardenias

What plants you are growing alongside your gardenias? What plants do you think look great as a border treatment with gardenias?

I have a bed of gardenias that are doing great (knock on wood) and am looking for ideas on what to plant as a border to best show them off. My gardenias are about 2-3' tall and are under an overhang on the front side of my house between the driveway and the front door.

If this is considered off topic, please let me know.

i guess they are in a semi-shaded site? you would want to plant a companion with similar light requirements and any color pairs well with the white gardenia flowers.
maybe just some summer annuals to attract interest after the gardenia flowers are gone. they only are in mass bloom for about a month.
if you just want to stick with green, maidenhair fern would offer a different texture and shade of green to the dark, shiny foliage of the gardenia. caladiums might be nice if the spot has late afternoon shade.

During the winter it is in full shade because it is under an overhang on the North side of the house. By Feb/March the border gets sun for most of the day. I've been considering:

Dietes (Fortnight Lily)
Agapanthus (Lily-Of-The-Nile)
Rhaphiolepis indica (Indian Hawthorn)
Nandina domestica (Heavenly Bamboo)
dwarf Myrtus communis
Hebe
dwarf thornless Carissa macrocarpa (Natal Plum)
Roses underplanted with something...Roses would need to few thorns though, maybe 'Pink Gruss an Aachen'. Has anyone else tried pairing roses with gardenias??

The climate is very mild so I'm sure there are many more exotic selections to consider. I'm afraid the ferns, which are gorgeous, would burn out here.

I have citrus trees(orange and lemon), Laurus nobilis 'Saratoga' (Sweet Bay), Magnolia grandiflora 'Majestic Beauty', iris, hot pink bouganvillea and carolina jasmine near the backyard gate, and a property line border of Coleonema pulchrum (Pink Breath of Heaven) on the other side of the driveway and two olive trees in the front yard near the gardenias.

I've even been tossing around the idea of lavender (I love fragrant plants), although I'm not sure how well lavender would tolerate the winter shade. Any thoughts on lavender in the shade in winter? There is a drip irrigation, so I can keep them dry in the winter. I know lavender doesn't like being cold and wet. If I thought I could keep a Michelia or Osmanthus fragrans under 3 or so feet, I would put it on my list. Anyone know of a dwarf Osmanthus fragrans???

I'm looking for something that will be evergreen or mostly evergreen, fairly tidy and soft-ish (no thorns) as it is beside the sidewalk. Ideally, fragrant and/or showy too.

Well, I've been making a mad effort to get lots of odds and ends plants I've been collecting all season into intelligent, aesthetically pleasing groups in the ground before winter. This weekend I grouped my 'Kleim's Hardy' gardenia with Pyracantha 'Mohave'. I love the way that the leaf size and shape is practically identical, but the gardenia is yellow green and the pyracantha leaf is a very complimentary blue green. I think the plant forms will make a pleasing contrast also. I also included a 'Heatherbun' Chamaecyparis and a 'Limeglow' Juniper in this same group. The 'Heatherbun' has a purplish tint and the 'Limeglow' is a mellowed chartreuse. It feels like an inspired combination although I was just dealing with what I had haphazardly collected and found on sale. I just hope I can balance watering so that it continues to look as good.

I was, admittedly, overzealous and I posted this question on several different forums. Sorry all. Here's what I did: I purchased a large Gold Flame spirea, moved one hydrangea out and left the other one in the plater, relocated to the shade of my azalea, placed 3 or 4 large clumps of white calla lilies near the back (the planter was full of callas), planted 5 dwarf agapanthus in the front for year-round green. I also flanked the sides and back of the agapanthus with pink and orange calla lilies, which die back in winter. 30 paperwhites bulbs near the gardenia, grape hyacinth along the edge, hosta in a shady area under/behind the gardeina (you can see it when you look outside from the front door). After finishing this rearrangement/redesign, most of the stuff in the planter looks bad. The gardenia and azalea haven't shown any signs of being upset, the hydrangea is wilty more frequently but hasn't dropped leaves. All the callas lost their leaves (they always do when I transplant them) but the white ones have sent up more and the colored will probably by back in the spring. The bulbs are okay, leave a bit dry but not brown.

I grow marigolds on the edges of my lasagna beds, but it's more of a pretty factor than a companion factor. And with this years bed rotation, the marigolds are on the edges of pepper, squash, and bean beds, and not along the tomato beds at all, lol. And I thickly direct sow marigold seed too- that way it's a nice bushy border and if/when they get bug-tacular I can just pull those plants if needed. This year it's carrots and leafy greens edging the tomato beds- but that's more of a got that little space left over I can cram them into rather than companionship. But hey, if it helps, why not? I've never been sure how basil is supposed to improve tomatoes either- I always figured it was kind of an old wives tale because tomatoes and basil are so often companioned in cooking rather than the growing aspect of it. I would never grow garlic in my tomato bed- my garlic gets it's own beds, and honestly is one of the only beds that is perfectly picked clean of anything that could compete with the garlic. Garlic might be good for tomatoes, but I wouldn't want to chance tomatoes out competing my garlic. Borage gets it's own growing space too, because it has it's own application, and I don't want it competed with. I grow calendula aside too for the same reason. My sage is in the herb garden, and I don't grow chives because I have large swaths of my lawn that are thick with wild chives so I don't need to grow any. Nasturtiums can be a great companion plant as far as I'm concerned- but as a companion plant only as a trap plant that I'm willing to sacrifice. I had a nasty aphid infestation last year, and the nasts trapped almost all of them- and when a bit of the plant got infested, I promptly cut it off and drowned it. I grew them next to peppers and squash last year, and they didn't get a single aphid. I wouldn't rely on nasts as a companion to just let sit and do whatever. But then I have the tendency to grow hedgerows of nasts because I use them a lot for various eating too, so I can use them as sacrificial companions and eating plants.

There are heathers with gray-silver foliage with white or pink flowers, and also ones with gold to red foliage, particularly during winter, though I no longer remember variety names. A combination of the two looks nice. Erica (heaths) will provide an alternative foliage texture, almost looking like tiny pine branches, but with late winter blooms. I've also planted other ground cover/rock garden plants around the edges of heather beds, including dianthus/pinks, Iberis/perennial candytuft, and some of the low-growing Campanulas.

I like the blue and white combo of gardenia and hydrangea.

In the same bed I have a border of white narcissus with a blue primrose that look stunning. I think a mass planting of blue primrose sprinkled with clumps of white narcissus would look stunning... ooh perhaps with one of the blue lepidote rhododendrons- like 'bluenose' or 'Blue Baron'. I think somewhere in there a good white fragrant rose would fit in as well (an alba perhaps?).

I also have monkshood and Va. Bluebells and Daphne in the same bed.

Will Iris grow where you live?
There are dwarf Iris that might look nice, they don't need alot of water and some varities bloom in spring and fall.
I have a gardenia planted in the front of my house too, but I don't have anything right next to it.
I have same sun exposure that you do.
I have dahlias (dwarf varities) planted about 3 feet in front of it.
The dahlias appreciate the afternoon shade.
Looks nice.
