My Little Squirrel Rant!!! Grrrrrrrrrrrr

I LOVE squirrels!! Their bushy tails, their playful natures, their chittering on the wires.

BUT, I ask you....

ARE THE AVAILABLE ACORNS NOT ENOUGH???????

WHY must you dig up all my new perennial starts, bite the heads off my tulips and roses and kill my brand new order of specialty sempervivums.

It is madness!!! *shakes fist at sky*

SO sorry for you Ariel! A few years ago I thought they were adorable 'Beatrix Potter' squirrels and even fed them since they didn't seem to cause too many problems. Then all of a sudden they started destroying things. The furry jerks do the same thing with my tulips. To add insult to injury they don't even EAT the flowers but leave them decapitated next to the plant!!!

The worst blow from came last year around this time. The previous spring I got a hardy terrestrial orchid that is said to have a swoon worthy scent of jasmine and vanilla. Yep, you guessed it. That #@%#^*!! squirrel snipped the stalk off before it bloomed!!!!

After the tree rats stripped the bark off one of my Japanese Maples I felt the same angst. Nothing has changed my mind since.

I can't tell if the root stock took over, did you see my collecton of photos? I called the grower and emailed them the photos, but they never contacted me again. But, since I did get a free plant, I am happy. Sorry to take over this thread, the lemons are still the same, it looks like a meyer but the lemons have very thick rinds. I did see a real mature meyer, and mine does look just the same in photos of leaves and everything, but the fruits are not round orange and have thick rinds Here is a link that might be useful: my lemon

Thanks so much Christy and Annette. I have a few hostas, but have never noticed hummers at them. I finally have some pictures (VERY PICTURE HEAVY) sorry: PLEASE help me!!!! Here they are with descriptions: Please excuse any mess you see, my yard is a very slow work in progress... A SouthEast View of my house and yard - (There is a large tree directly behind me and the camera that helps block a lot of the sun). If you look closer, I have dug up a large area along the whole deck for flowers. You can see it better in the next picture. NOTE: Please excuse the bad looking deck, it is in progress of being sanded and stained. I KNOW, that is a Crimson King Maple (non-native, it was here when we purchased the house). Every winter (a little at a time), I plant on limbing it up so more sun can get in). I just expanded my planting area under the tree (another Work In Progress) and just planted red and white impatiens (can't see them yet, just planted), also have a couple of hostas, a Jack Frost (my FAVORITE plant), some ground cover, birdbath, the trunk of a tree with fake rabbits sitting on top and a fake large mushroom in it. It is really beautiful, you just can't see it very well right now and plants have not filled out yet. This is a closeup view of in front of the deck where I want to put my Lady in Red and Coral Nymph (right there in that corner, it gets the most sun, but still not tons) My Lady in Red all planted in its whiskey barrel. I will be planting my Coral Nymph in a whiskey barrel too when I get paid in a few days. This is the view of the house & yard from the opposite side above. There is a Tree directly behind me in this picture also (not fully grown yet). My house and this tree helps block the East Rising Sun but some early sun does get in. Here is a little bed I was going to make, about 10x12. Sorry about the mess, I am trying to kill the grass and of course the ground will have to be evened out. I was going to put my hummer flowers here, but it surely does not get enough sun (a couple hours sun and some dappled). This picture is facing the right side of my fenced in VERY LARGE back yard (where the dogs and the squirrels hang out). Picture taken faces Southwesterly. This picture was taken off my front deck (looking out onto my two large conifers (Junipers) and my bird station. The area where the bird station is only gets dappled sunlight (extremely shady area) Pictures of flowers I purchased, big letdown (almost). Coral Nymph, Salvia Splendens, Aquilegia Swan Lavender and Swan Red & White (the red and white is pink) Columbine Hybrids?. Apparently, even though listed on the back of the tags on these, they ARE NOT attractive to hummers I have learned, Yarrow Moonshine (just because I wanted it so badly because I love yellow flowers), but it is going to be a big letdown because I hear this absolutely needs full sun, and some Creeping Jenny (which I know I will find a place for). Two hanging plants I purchased: Fuchsia (which later I learned will not attract hummers), because it is not a certain kind of Fuchsia, but I just love the colors on this plant and will buy it every year, it is just stunning in real life, much better than the picture taken......and Pansy's which I learned will also not attract hummers. Again, please help me if you can....or maybe I will just plant all hostas in my yard......I like/love hostas just not everywhere :(

Oh MY David..........this sounds like a project for Mr. Science, not me! How come when I was given my cutting, it was, as I described, just a 5'tall stick? Really, it just looked like a stick......no buds, no little bitty branches, no roots,nothing! I stuck it in the ground and it grew. I don't know what type of maple it is. I need to get a good book about trees and try to identify it, but it is NOT small and just looks like your garden variety maple to me. The bark the squirrels are peeling off is rather "greenish" if that possibly gives you any hint as to the type. Hey...if I were to send you a leaf and possible some bark, could YOU identify this for me? Are the squirrels eating something from the bark? If they are just stripping this for nesting material, they sure do waste a lot of it! I mean, I could have built a good size tee-pee just from the stuff I have already raked up and there seems to be no end in sight......there is a new pile everyday! And I'm going broke buying peanuts for the little pigs AND the blue jays who are just about as wiley as the squirrels! Once again I am crying out "HELP!" (and thanks!) Greenlydia

I can relate to so many of these comments. I feel too, that we are bombarded by fragrance now, and I don't know if I changed or the industry changed - but after 1985 I stopped wearing all perfumes. Before that, I was one of those offenders, wearing Shalimar, Chanel 19, Givenchy, went crazy over them. That was the year was pregnant and had my son so maybe my body changed during that time and never went back. Now, so many things bother me!! Stores filled with candles, eucalyptus, incense, room fresheners, people drenched in cologne, cars with cardboard pine cones hanging from the rearview mirror, or scented with artificial strawberry (that one has to be the worst) - even on the beach this summer, I had to move to a different spot because the person 30 feet away from me had some kind of artificial coconut sun tan lotion on that just reeked. I even have to avoid the aisle in the supermarket where the artifically buttered microwave popcorn lurks. All I can smell is "rancid." LOL. It's banned at home as well - unless I'm out of the house, the kids cannot make it! I'm not allergic in the true sense of the word but get an immediate sinus headache from all these things. I don't use fabric softener or any detergent with scent. It's amazing too, how nice and "crisp" clothes feel when they haven't been "softened" (i.e. covered with a layer of grease). We have a blended family and when my son comes home from his dad's house,and my stepdaughters come back from their mom's, I can smell the Bounce sheets a mile away. That reminds me. We bought a vacation home last year and the previous owner must have read one of those Household Hint columns. There were individual Bounce sheets in every drawer, every cupboard, behind furniture and even under carpets. I'm still looking for them every time I go up there. And I'm sure that on some level, even by my family, I am viewed as a "fussy" person, so I hate making a big deal of it. I know people are tired of hearing me protest. But even chenille sweaters bug me -- blocked sinuses, itchy eyes. So added to all those "oh no, Hon, what's that new smell on you?" comments, my husband has to try to not wear the nice gifts he got from his daughters. LOL, yesterday my son came home with a bag of hazelnut flavoured coffee. I started to rant. Everyone else loves it, and all I can think about is a sandwich place I used to go to at lunch time, where the tuna, roast beef and egg salad sandwiches all tasted like hazelnut coffee because they had a pot of it brewing in there all the time. No doubt it is confounding to garden with tiny little helpers who have contrary ideas and are ALWAYS OUT THERE. We had to pick our tomatoes way before they were ripe or they would get a bite taken from each one. Just one bite on the bottom where you can't see it until you grab the tomato and come away with a handfull of mush. Like people, I think some of them are just ornery.

How irritating! My toy fox terrier keeps them on the run most of the time.
But sometimes it seems like they just make rude "signs" at her.
I hung a very small dish feeder on the arbor for the smaller birds. The squirrels even get in that. Looks like an elephant in a teacup.

I had a very sorry moment when my son was 4 and I had no idea that they bit off flower heads, and my brand new tulips were lying, beheades on the ground, so I asked him if he did it, and he said "no", but I couldn't tell by his face, even though he tends to be very honest, and I kept asking and finally explained that punishment would be worse if he was lying, because I want to be able to trust his word. He admitted it, was grounded from the park that day, and I was telling my husband how sad I was that it was the first time he'd ever lied to me.
A week later, I go outside, see a squirrel jump, and there is a rose head lying on the ground.
I felt Terrible!!!! I went inside to immediately apologize to my son and asked why he'd admitted to it ("I got confused") poor little guy.
So he yelled at squirrels all that year when he saw them lol

Awwww! That is so sad but cute, Ariel! Maybe he will grow up to be an exterminator! Lol.

The squirrels around here have been digging up my bulbs for years. No wonder I don't see any appear in the spring=:/ But this year we have a monster squirrel! I always feed the birds in a lasagna type dish on the fence when it starts to get cold. This year our monster squirrel seems to think it is his private stash! So he fills it with pinecones so no one will get any! Pictures speak a thousand words.

Oh my. Gardeners have so many "helpers"! Beetles, squirrels, gophers, voles, aphids...etc... I am so sorry the little stinkers are causing you so much trouble. They are very clever too which makes it worse!

CTC ~ I have to do that with the Halloween candy around here or my husband will eat it all!!

At first I thought the squirrel was leaving me tokens of appreciation.......until I watched him carefully pile the cones in and protect his stash up and down the fence and even in the trees! He literally pounces on the birds and chases them through the trees! He lays along the top of the fence like he's on guard and only does this when I fill the dishes. It is quite a gong show to watch. Especially when the maggies and bluejays come down and start throwing the pinecones everywhere. Lol. :)

My neighbour tells me that they fill the birdhouses on her deck with all that I feed them then they go in and harrass the sparrows when they build nests in the spring!

Maybe try feeding them and they will leave your plants alone. In other words put some squirrel goodies beside the new plants. :)Just a thought.....

Just had to add this link in. I have recently started making Gnomes in ceramics for my garden. Where I used to think they were the silliest, ugliest garden ornaments around, they have started to charm their way into my garden......or maybe they are brainwashing me...... Regardless, I fear they will become as pesky as the squirrels as is seen in this video. Good thing I have dogs! :)
