Containers and growth consitency

stevec

This is my first year for containers. After the trees went dormant recently, I noticed the space between nodes to be much different in comparing early summer with late summer/fall growth. This varied from 4" to 0.5". On my in-ground trees these variances were much less noticeable (all around 3-4".) Is this normal for container grown plants? Is it potentially due to differences in moisture levels as the heat increases at the end of summer? Something I also noted was that the late grown was much wider than the earlier growth ... almost a club effect. In each case the plants grew to dormancy with lush green leaves ... no signs of stress.
