New to Figs North East Zone 7 Fig List

I am planning to grow figs on Long Island New York zone 7

I plan on container growing half and planting and covering the other half.

I would like to grow about a dozen types.

This is the list that I have come up with.

Peters Honey,Alma,Atreano,Juropa,Desert King,Black Jack,Sal's Fig,Hardy Chicago,Marseilles, Tennessee Mountain Fig, Melanzana. What would your favorit list be for the 12 best figs be for Zone 7? P.S. I am not crazy about brown turkey. so I took it off my list totals only 11

Add Latarulla and lose Tenn Mountain. Where do you plan getting Sals fig? Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion with adding latarulla.
I just got the Sal's fig from Belleclaire Nursery. Eatable Landscaping also has sal's fig only if you call and they ship.

I have a Brown Turkey next to my house(6'-7' away)..It was here when we moved in 5 years ago. I LOVE figs. However since it is next to the house/foundation I am a little concerned as this tree is growing huge!! If I trim it hard I get no breba crop cuz that grows on last years growth..the second crop usually never has a chance to ripen. I could pull all the breba crop but what with trimming this is becoming too much work. Allowed to grow it would be over 25'..the figs however ARE delicious!! Even if they are the breba crop. I harvested all the crop when we had a good breba..no splits.. did well. I live in Willamette Valley and have had no problems with this fig. It is in a heat sink being next to the house though. I am probably going to pull it down..UGH I hate killing plants :( I am going build a 8' corner wall away from the house and plant another....I do love figs! There probably are better tasting figs..but I take what I can get!! I won't replant the Turkey..probably a Violetta. I think a heat sink helps ripening in this region. Zone 6-7. As far as I can tell roots can be a problem..I know our Mission fig in San Diego had huge roots all over the place. Some people say no and many say yes..not worth the risk.

Milehigh, Quite in to the figs with 70 or so varieties but it is a relatively new obsession for me and while I am reading and learning as much as possible I can make a mistake BUT from the way I understand it..... Some figs do have a big breba crop but need the wasp for the main crop, they are called San Pedro types and Desert King is one of them. On most common figs the breba fruit is bigger but inferior to the main crop figs in quality and that is why most people if they can only get one crop due to the length of their growing season shoot for the main crop figs and forgo the brebas. In really really short season areas the breba fig is about all they can get to mature. BUT it still needs protection because the embryo figs for the breba crop will be damaged at like 15-20 degrees. In zone 5 you should be able to ripen main crop figs if the plant is in a favorable south facing location, ideally against a wall. Probably easier for you to have it in a pot though. Pots offer the advantage of being able to move it out on warm days and the pot heats up and the fig grows earlier. Yes that means if cold weather is predicted you would have to move it back inside where it would not freeze. Breba figs grow on last years wood so it would be lignified (brown).....main crop figs grow on wood that grew in the current year and would still be green...well should still be green when the tiny fig first forms. Later in the summer that wood will turn brown. There are a ton of growers in the north east part of the country and up in to Canada that grow the figs in pots and successfully ripen the figs. It does take some dedication. There are some very hardy types that will grow planted in the ground and survive though in zone 5....they may need protection. I'm in Florida so that part of the hobby I am not well versed in:) Part of the process that helps is the pinching out of the apical tip every 6 leaves. If you don't do that the fig wants to just keep making green growth and by the time it decides to make figs it is way too late to be able to ripen them. Tammy your potted callas were likely forced. I'd just plant them in the garden. They should grow all season and either be lifted after the foliage has been hit with a frost or left alone. Put them somewhere like a garage and once the foliage has dried store them like any other tender bulb or they can be left inground over the winter. I used to lift them but then I noticed that the ones I missed were coming back in the spring so I started leaving them out. You can put the amaryllis in the ground and lift it in the fall or you can keep it in a pot. I'm not sure what you do to make them bloom but I'm sure you can find info online. I have Brown Turkey figs in the yard and some tender varieties in containers. The container figs are fully leafed out. I fight the squirrels anhd birds for the fruit but last year I had quite a bit so all were happy. There's several figs that do well in zone 7 though they should be planted in a protected area.

here is a note about bringing figs out of dormancy sooner in cold areas.i'm in buffalo, ny.and the last frost here is around memorial day. last year i had a bunch of small fig plants in my basement that i was afraid they would die in the cold. they broke dormancy early around first week of april. even with lights or a window they the new growth grew thin and week and a poor yellow color. then when it was time to bring them out , i had to harden then but within two weeks all the leaves fell off the growth from indoors. eventual it all grew back but i had spagehti branches and the figs grew late and never ripened. so i wouldn't suggest breaking the early dormancy. good luck with all atemps. kevin

I am voting for Black Madeira, Castle Kennedy, a good Black Mission (I know that will get laughs, but a good one is worth having) and Violet Sepor. Consider Osborn. Stick with the Sal's.

I'm curious why you'd recommend Black Madeira for zone 7? Is it early cropping or relatively hardy? I have the variety, but not long enough to know much about it.

Black Ischia and Viollete de Bordeauxis a must for me.I think i fell in love with very black and very blue figs with very dark red interior!!!

Most of mine are still pretty young, but for a dark fig Negronne is my favorite for taste, looks, and productivity. Sals comes in second, it's a good fig and very productive. Black Ischia I like for looks and taste, but is severely affected by mosaic and has almost zero vigor. Paradiso (local cutting, not same as variety at City Farm Nursery, NJ) is my favorite green fig, sweet and flavorful, productive -- but I don't have many mature contenders yet in that catagory for comparison.

Zigerelli was a gift I received this fall from another fig collector. It's very tiny now, am hoping it survives the winter. It may require a longer growing season that what I have here. Sultane (available at Paradise Nursery in VA) looks very promising as an early dark fig.

Gene,

It is an awesome tasting fig. It tends to be longer season for me, BUT recent summers here have been relatively cool, so a warmer summer climate might be as good or better than a longer season. My climate doesn't relate to a lot of places, but on flavor, I would be giving this a try.

I also agree that Black Ischia would be a good choice.

Thank you for the information that you have provided and I was wondering if you knew where I can buy Black Madeira, Castle Kennedy,Violet Sepor. I see that Reeds sells Violet Sepor and Castel Kennedy I emailed them but I am not sure they will Sell to USA, I asked Bellecare about Black Maderia and they don't have any. I realy would like to try this fig. I have never tried growing from cuttings and I have read that you had a difficult time growing Black Madeira from cuttings.
