Cottage Gardens

Just want to compliment all the pictures posted in here!

This is the first time I've spent looking around in this forum. I don't have a 'cottage garden' but I am a garden photos addict. I was surprised at all the really nice photos presented in here. I'm not finished looking yet (there's a lot), but I just wanted to say "thanks for sharing" to all the gardeners who have posted their lovely pics.

I've attached my yard gallery if anyone's interested...but it's not a cottage garden.

Ron, WOW...your yard is amazing!!! Like you mentioned, its not cottage but its beautiful in a different way. I love it. Your plants are so interesting. Where do you live?

You're welcome, I'm sorry it's not working for you. It shouldn't make a difference but what browser are you using? I use IE for GW and Firefox for most everything else. Brought three of my old hydro pipes in and set them up. Started out a couple dozen new plants. Sprayed all the dirt plants down with a mixture of pepper juice, garlic juice and commercial plant soap to treat for aphids. It stinks and makes my eyes water walking in there.

What is a buckeye? A buckeye is an inedible nut which resembles the eye of a deer (or buck); thus called "buck eye". This nut develops on trees naturally grown and common in the state of Ohio. The scientific name is "Aesculus glabra" but the tree is widely known simply as the "Ohio Buckeye". It is a small, round tree. In average it grows approximately 20-30 feet in height and width. In the spring, the tree blooms yellowish flower clusters. They are typically the first trees to leaf out in the spring. Ohio Buckeye has a dense oval to round form, branching quite low. Each leaf is compounded with 5-7 leaflets that are 4-5 inches long. Foliage is medium to dark green and may develop yellow or orange fall color. Fruit is a glossy brown nut enclosed in a thick husk. Why are buckeye trees found in Ohio? The answer is in the soil and climate. Ohio Buckeyes can survive in a broad range of soil and climatic conditions. However, it performs best in moist, well drained soil. In full sun or in partial shade. Ohio's climate has perfect conditions for these trees to grow. In any climate, they are susceptibe to leaf scorch. This problem results in browning of the leaf margins beginning in mid summer. By late summer to early fall, the trees look unsightly and are often partially defoliated. At this time, the buckeye nuts naturally fall to the ground. and know you know the rest of the story. Thanks everyone. Vikki, Libby, I live in a suburb just due east of San Diego. It's on a steep hillside and I get less than ten inches of precipitation a year. Water is expensive so I have to be careful what I can grow...almost exclusively dry stuff. The last year or two I've been introducing desert-type palms and cycads...especially South African cycads into the yard, because of their low water requirements. For me and my yard, the basic limiting factor is water.

Ron, your garden is stunning. Truly a masterpiece. How long has it been in creation? Everything looks very well established.

I'm not surprised you are liking the gardens on this forum. Aside from the obvious differences in water requirements, your garden shares a lot in common with the Cottage style. Variety, rich texture, depth, abundance. It's surprisingly familiar to us Cottage gardeners. But very exotic at the same time.

Congratulations on your exceptional garden. Don't be a stranger!

It's great to see such beautiful and exotic plants and blooms from a low-water environment. Your photography is equally stunning!

We are in a stage D4-Exceptional Drought (the worst or the worst) here in North Carolina, so it is encouraging to see what you've done (even though we don't have the warm winters).

Ron, I was going to say you must be in San Diego with that beautiful combination of cactus and trees. We were just there a few weeks ago and admiring things like the juxtaposition of the Balboa Park cactus and rose garden.

Your garden is GORGEOUS. I especially LOVE the hammock garden area. This is my DH's idea of shangri-la.

I think you have your own kind of cottage garden in a way.
