Memories of Season Past with My Trees

Well now thats its cold wintery season here, i would like to sharer some pictures of season past, although these were posted past season some new member probably have not seen them yet along with other forum members pictures unless they search a particular topic. So here are a few and will post more from time to time. Enjoy!

Before the fig bug bit me here are my elders, first from left Hardy Chicago, middle is EL Sals' i bought, last is unknown bought from someone in state of Georgia.

was a good year for me getting lots of fruit and enjoying them, have more fig plants now as some know growing under grow lights and hope one day to show pictures of those as well. Some cuttings were sent out this fall season for forum members to try in there climate and it will be fun to share information and pictures in future about them.

This was not a good year for Figs in the NW. We had one of the coldest seasons on record. The Desert King and this Lattarula Fig did OK, but the Conadria and Brunswick did not. Was just not warm enough.
What is that last fig in your hand?
Looks very good.

The photo is a Lattarula fig in the back yard.

Hi Elizabeth, Neem Oil does not provide immediate gratification. There is virtually no instant death factor. Usually takes 3-14 days to die. The greatest benefit of using Neem Oil is in preventing the occurance of future generations. Click on My Page on my post above, then clip on My Clippings. There is a very good article about Neem Oil. What a wonderful project! I have some U.S native tree seeds from a seed exchange, and I've already winter sown what I can use. Would you be interested in seeds for Kentucky coffee tree (Gymnocladus dioica) and Devil's walking stick (Aralia spinosa)? I have maybe a half-dozen seeds of the coffee tree, and about 15 of the aralia. I'm afraid I'm going to use all the milk jugs I can save, but I should have some 1-2 gallon plastic pots to donate - I'll have to check my car port. I usually save the pots from landscaping projects at my church. I would also be very interested in buying some native understory trees, if you have any extras this year. My parents have a large wooded lot where I can "play" with planting new trees. Also, my church has a large property in the town of Union that is mostly wooded, but definitely could use some new trees near the parking lot/picnic pavilion area, especially trees like dogwoods, redbud, and amelanchier. Also, may I suggest that some of the neighborhoods affected by the 2006 flooding could use some new trees. The properties that the county/state bought out and razed have opened up lots of "green space" that could be replanted with appropriate trees. I live in the neighborhood above Argonne/Verdun streets in Endwell, and we lost 20+ houses and an entire trailer park to the flooding. The bottom of our neighborhood is wide open. . . . Laurel

All beautiful! And Wolverine looks especially pretty with the yellow Creeping Charlie (I think it's Creeping Charlie). This summer I have to get some of that lamium that I see behind Christmas Tree. My CT, by the way, is overwintering in the garage, but I'll plant it next summer... pictures of yours are what caused me to buy it, Don. Its a beauty. Edit: Creeping Jenny... not Charlie. Charlie's a weed.

More of season past, weight was 4.5 Ounces , this was my biggest fig unknown as pictured in this thread , some say bigger is not always better which is true, this one was not the case it was very good, only complaint you almost need a bib when eating as juice tends to squirt all over if not careful!

Oh my world. I am soooo inspired by your plants. How big a pot are you using and what kind of mix.? Do you have to bring them inside? I am wondering about the weight if you have to move the pots.

gardenfreak,i used miracle grow mix but going to change next year as i have to root prune them, i'll use some shultz premium and amend that with some other mixes to keep the soil from drying out to fast. The pots are probably around 25 gallons or so but not exactly sure, i might also try a different container as well although similar but more straight sided not sure i have to see the costs. At end of seson i usually let the soil dry some and the containers get much lighter to move with hand truck, my uncle used to grow 1 tree much bigger than mine that had a nice size trunk but it was a lot more work as him and his son would bury in yard every year they did this many many years(faamily tree) long story. So the way i do is actually easier for me instead of bury in yard because i would have to bury too many or wrap and cover to many our winters can be nasty. To me there nothing special growing in pots its kinda cheating as i just move them with hand truck the folks that grow them inground and wrap or bury many of them thats the real growers in my opinon and much more work they deserve the credit! it just works best this way for me. Thanks for looking and the forum is nice to see ones options as there are several different ways to choose from.
