Wisteria standard, who sells?

I"m trying to find a wisteria standard through an online source. I found one at whiteflowerfarm for like 150.00 -- way too much for me. I found gurneys had one for like 24.95. I don't know either company. Anyone know a good source with a price that's not too high?

I found wayside gardens (who I know isn't top rated) has a 4' standard of wisteria 'prolific'. Does anyone have any experience with this type? They have it for 79.00, which is much better than 150.

but if i'm getting a wisteria I want it to be very fragrant. Anyone know?

I have seen "prolific" used in many catalogs and nurseries as a nicer way to say "invasive".

May I have the audacity to suggest that you don't plant a Wisteria of any type? I grew a standard for a good 15 years. It was beautiful and fragrant in the early spring causing many a passerby to stop and OOh and Ahh. However what they didn't know was how much of a problem it would become. The roots are highly invasive and travel long distances. Wisteria sprouts sprung up everywhere in my neighbors yard even sending long tendrils up his drainspout. You or I may think a house engulfed in a Wisteria is beautiful, but do we have the right to infringe on anothers property however unwittingly? Plus those roots invaded all of my flower beds. It's been two years since we chopped the Wisteria down but those large roots are still producing tendrils that threaten to strangle my roses. It's become a constant battle to keep them in check. Brush killer is just shrugged off. I'm telling you it's a big mess. Please reconsider it if you have neighbors or nursery beds anywhere within 1/4 mile of the Wisteria.

We have a collie from one of the top breeders in the country. We waited months for her to get a "pet quality" female that was the color that we wanted. The only difference in our dog and a "show quality" is that "show quality" sable collies must have brown eyes. Our dog's mother was a blue merle (blue eyes), and she is a sable with one brown eye and one eye that is half blue, and therefore could not be shown. Our breeder had already had several veterinary health checks done on our dog when we got her, and she sent those records to us along with her AKC papers and her "family tree" :) I'm sure our dog may have been less expensive than a "show quality", but she was still quite pricey ($900 plus shipping). Our breeder would only sell us a "pet quality" dog because we did not intend to breed or show, and she has a long waiting list of people wanting her dogs for breeding and show purposes, and needs good homes for the ones that she is unable to sell for show dogs. Our breeder was recommended to us by a lady here in town that has had and bred collies for 54 years. She recommended this breeder because the breeder breeds for consistent personalities and good health. I spent a lot of time talking to the breeder and researching her, and her dogs, on the internet. My vet also bred collies and was familiar with her and had one of her dogs. I spent a couple of months researching the breeder before we got on her waiting list. My mother has a maltese that she got from the sister of a friend that had a male and female, and decided to start breeding them. The woman had been breeding them for several years, but was not really a professional (even though she has papers). She was just a "dog-lover" that bought two registered dogs and sells their offspring. My mom has had lots of health issues with her dog. And, the problems she has are the same problems that people are having that bought other puppies from this woman. The vet says they are all genetic, and the woman has continued to breed. She charges over $500 for each of her puppies, so she is probably making a profit. But I agree, most good breeders probably aren't making any money.... costs too much to certify their health, go to shows, feed, groom, and just breed them. Also, I have no problem with paying hundreds for my pets because as my DH says "If you can't afford whatever they are charging to buy the pet, you certainly can't afford ownership." That $900 was a drop in the bucket compared to what I have spent on toys, food, grooming, vet bill, pet sitters, etc. I'm beginning to think my kid's college tuition will look cheap compared to this dog! But she's worth every penny of what I spend on her.

Iceberg is a great rose, and for a good reason. But being more immune to our scorching summers has nothing to do with some special charm or a spell casted upon the name Iceberg. Like any other iceberg, this rose will also be damaged in the warm sun, but to the far less extent than some fully double, crimson rose. It's simple physics -- white petals reflect more light, thus remaining much cooler. And semidouble, loose flower type allows for more air circulation between the petals, thus producing even better cooling effect. Iceberg's leaves are tiny, and also allow for more air circulation. Plus, flower size is not big, just small enough not to accumulate too much heat. That's why this is an ideal rose for planting in public places, where there's no or very little protection and care. Observe this with any other single and semidouble rose of paler hues -- they whitstand heat much, much better. You'll notice only slight shift in hue in coloured roses as they open, as days become warmer and the sun hotter. But because it's already white, Iceberg will look unaffected, although, in reality, it suffers too, but to the much less extent. Double and fully double roses don't like hot weather of Australia and if we're smart, we'll plant them in shade, in the back, under some protection, and water them well to preserve their shape and their perfume longer. And if we carefully observe how sun moves and casts the shadow around our home during the summer, the better we will be in designing gardens and planting roses. There's nothing worse than plant delicate pinks, yellows and crimsons in the front of our gardens, where their only protection is a lonely cloud, that comes once in a while.

New home sought for mature standard wisteria in NJ

About 20 years ago, new to gardening, I planted a standard wisteria. It now has a beautiful muscular trunk about 4" in diameter, and the summer foliage reaches about 10' high and 12' across. It has never bloomed for me, even after I belatedly learned how to prune it correctly, probably because I ignorantly planted it in too much shade. I would like to find a new home for it. The photograph shows that the wisteria is now badly listing, do to exuberant growth this year. Were it to be dug up and transplanted when dormant, and grown in full sun, I am sure its upright tree form will be restored and maintained. The wisteria is growing near New Brunswick, NJ, and is available to someone who is willing to dig it up and transport it him/herself, with a little help from me.

Silverkitty, I was wondering how it got the name prolific.
Makes sense, as now I'm finding out the jap anc chinese varieties are very invasive.

I wonder if grafted, if it would be less "prolific".
Anyone know?

What is it grafted on to? I wonder why it would be grafted. I have seen pics of them in tree form but to me it just looked like the older, thick stems of the vine were trained to grow like trunks. Sorry I can't help! $150 seems so high of a price, they grow so fast maybe you can just train the vine yourself and save $.

Home Depot here in Ca sells the Chinese purple type in 5 gal pot at very good price . You might check HD first before they order.

Truely it is very fast growing. However I have seen a westeria pruned into an impressive 6-7 feet tree. The trunk was made of 3-4 main vines twisted into one, shaped branches just like an umbrella with clusters of hanging flowers. That means it should be pruned every year,

they are very easy to form by doing it yourself. heck, they grow so fast here that you can have one in a couple of years. stake the most prolific branch to an upright position and trim lower growth.
also, you could use the native american species for this. it is a slower groing vine and has smaller flower clusters that would be more in scale with the dimensions of your pruned tree. the fragrance is not as strong but still there.

I just placed two separate orders for two tree-form Prolific Wisteria with Wayside. I paid $80 per tree, minus a 20% discount. These trees were grafted and grown in the Netherlands and sold here in the U.S. by Wayside. The catalog says the flowers are "fragrant." The term Prolific refers to its flower strength because the racemes bloom all at once, rather than any invasiveness of the branches or the roots. That is not to say the roots and branches are not invasive also.

I read somewhere that grafted wisterias bloom sooner than cutting grown plants and definitely much sooner than seed grown plants. It's also possible that the grafted rootstock will be less invasive than the native growth habit of Prolific itself. You can get cutting grown wisterias for much less than $80 at Gurney's, but I'd rather have a grafted plant.

I am uprooting two absolutely no-maintenance but totally unremarkable landscape trees to make room for these very high-maintenance tree wisterias because I just love their beautiful blooms and am willing to put in the work to get there.
