Little tree from my home town

I collected this tree from my hometown in Louisiana around the 1st of September. It is doing well for now. I have no idea what it is. The people are gone now. They were in thier late 80's or early 90's when I was a kid. I remember the tree from my childhood. They were from Sicily.

There are a lot of very interesting fig cultivars left to be "rediscovered" growing in Louisiana.....congrats on your find. The leaves look somewhat familiar, was the old man named "Sal" by any chance?.....just kidding. I look forward to your future posts on your new tree.

He is safely with the agency that deals with these things. They know where he lives in the hills with his mom and brother because they have encountered him before and placed a GPS collar on him. But according to an official, he wants to find a mate and settle in his own territory, so if they bring him "home", he'll just start wandering again. "git rid of th' gummint" is actually the answer. If these trees were owned by private land owners, they would have an incentive to look after them. Bad pruning means their land value goes down. If a private owner makes a mistake, the mistake is limited to his or her holdings... and not "all of the trees" through out the historic town. An individual business sometimes paves paradise and private individuals can make mistakes, but it takes government to make colossal ones.

It has been a while, and I was not on the front line of the battle, but I remember the injections were very expensive--hundreds of dollars per tree per application. And there was no way of really learning if there was any, or sufficient, benefit. It also might have required a licensed applicator, which we were lucky to have available. I don't know if other products have proven to be effective since that time. nil13's link is very good. We dropped the infected trees and tarped them, but the oaks began dying faster than they could be cut. And yes, it was heartbreaking when visually healthy trees would begin to show symptoms and the realization that so many mature oaks were going to be lost. I believe the final loss count went into triple digits, but by then I really did not want to know the specifics.

Thanks so much for the lovely comments. Bonnie, I love whimsy also and loved this idea when I saw it. It's pretty easy to do altho my DH actually did it all! I just find the ideas to keep him busy! LOL Lynn, it really is amazing what a little spray paint will do, isn't it. I used to sell pre-owned treasures in my store which we bot at YS's and I cleaned up and DH painted. They looked like new and sold really well! I think most of my house is decorated in YS treasures! Jeanne, nice to see you over here! I haven't been over at GJ much since our season is over early and I find even thinking about gardening a bit depressing. I will post there and also must post about my garden house as I promised. I'm very remiss with taking and posting pics when I'm busy. You're most welcome Karen, and you know we expect to see a pinecone creation from you before long! No pressure now. ;-)

J.A. that is one cute little tree. I particularly like the shape of the leaves. I wonder if they will stay that shape as the tree matures. I hope it grows up to be all you remember it to be. Time has a way on testing our memories.

Mr. Demicka is what I knew him as. We were never permitted to call anyone older anything but Mr. At 65 I can not remember back that far to tell you want color the fig was. I hope it will make a couple figs this coming year to see what it looks like. It is growing very fast. If it turns out to be anything worth having I will be glad to share it. Gene, I wonder the same thing. Fig trees seem to have the ability to fool you with there leaves.
