rooted cutting ?? to grow in the ground or in a pot?

This may sound like a silly question; Is the raising of a fig, in a pot so very different then in the ground, other then the obvious, achieving a full grown tree as a part of the landscape.

I may not have worded that question well. I have 8 fig cuttings, each rooting(hopefully) in a gallon pot.

I see pics that show these young trees growing in a pot and producing fruit.

I realize there comes a time when a decision must be made to prune or plant (right?,)but until then, why or what would influence my decision when I am sure the cuttings have rooted, to plant in the ground or leave in a pot?

I hope I made sense in stating my question.
