New member - pictures!

Hello!

I have been lurking here for a while, so I finally decided to introduce myself and post some pics. We bought our house 2.5 years ago, so this was my third year in the garden. However, it feels more like a first or second year because I had a baby last spring and my garden was mostly nettles and thistles last year; very impressive, 7-foot tall weeds! When we bought the house it didn't have even a hint of a garden - it had been logged and they left it looking like a clearcut full of weeds. Needless to say, I'm still dealing with those weeds. This year I worked hard to get it in shape. It is a work in progress, and I constantly have a list of about 5000 projects on the go, but I love it. All of your gardens have been an inspiration as I've started creating mine, so I hope you enjoy getting a glimpse of our yard. Somehow I only took pictures of the front yard this year, though I do have more established gardens in the back. I'll have to get my camera out more next year ;).

Hmmm... now I just have to figure out how to add those pictures. This is not obvious, is it?

Lucy, you rock, thank you for your insight. And prompt! You are on top of things. I am honored that you see such potential in this little tree! I had considered the option of planting it in the ground, but I definitely have an aversion to the unnatural aesthetic flow created when you get to chopping the trunk. Certinaly growing it in the ground free for a season or so will thicken up the trunk and give the appearance of age - if I understand correctly - but when you chop the tree it seems like the taper becomes very unnatural looking, and still quite fat on top from what I've seen. Now I think I am seeing a new life in this tree, however - the trunk has a bit of an s-curve already, and up right at the top the trunk seems to split into 2 leads of almost equal size. I just don't know where to go but I am definitely excited. I will definitely be leaving it outdoors, it is much happier there than being coveted in the house! I will work on visualizing a plan for this little baby. Thanks again for your input!

"Scott's does not have the label for your grass seed online (404 error), so it's hard to know what you might have." I got a copy of the label and this is what was in the mix that I used: 9.76% Wendy Jean Creeping Red Fescue 9.75% Shademaster III Creeping Red Fescue 8.77% Citation Fore Perennial Ryegrass 8.28% Silver Dollar Perennial Ryegrass 6.34% Gaelic Kentucky Bluegrass 2.92% Abbey Kentucky Bluegrass 2.92% Right Kentucky Bluegrass 50.00% Water Smart Plus Fertilizer Coating 1.00% Inert From Seed .25% Other Crop Seed .01% Weed Seed ------------------------- "1. Why do I have such an ugly color lawn? Is it the seed I used? Could be but it's more likely the fertilizer you forgot to use. You didn't mention that you used any so I'm making an assumption. If you did fertilize, what did you use and when?" You are correct, I did not use any. I listened to the guy at Home Depot (maybe a mistake?) that told me I should not fertilize a new lawn, it could kill the grass coming in. ----------------------- "2. What is the grass that almost feels and looks like hay? Need the label off the Scott's bag to know the Guaranteed Analysis of the seed. That is not completely likely to help because what you probably have is a weed that's giving you that effect. Does that grass ever go to seed? If so, can you let it go to seed and take a picture. Grass is much easier to ID if there's a seed head or flower." I’m not sure to be honest. When I pull a piece out, it comes from the same stem that has 3 or 4 other grass-like blades (that are still green). ----------------------- "3. What, if anything can I do to fix this and make it a nice, green lawn (other than starting over which is last resort)? Fertilize if you have not already done so. This time of year you should not use chemical fertilizers, but you may use all the organic fertilizer your budget allows. Rather than using commercially bagged organic fertilizer, I prefer to use the ingredients of those same fertilizers. You can buy them at any feed store under the name of alfalfa, corn, wheat, soybean meal, etc. It's a little secret that organic fertilizer is made from animal feed. The application rate for any of them is 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Again, you can use it any day of the year, or every day of the year, with no fear of hurting the grass. It takes 3 full weeks before you see results with these grain type fertilizers." I can definitely try that. With that, I’m sure I wouldn’t have to worry about my puppy ingesting any of it. If you have been fertilizing, then there is likely a problem with your soil. Send a sample to Logan Labs in Ohio for testing. You are undoubtedly strongly inclined to send your sample to Penn State, but you'll get a lot more test for the money at Logan Labs. To be honest, I wouldn’t have any idea where to send it, but now I have an idea. ----------------------- "*Note - I have small mounds, maybe golfball size that appear and when I knock them over, there are holes about the diameter of a pen or sharpie. I have no idea what is creating these. There are no holes protruding from the "ball" except the one that enters down into the soil. These are likely earth worm mounds. Sometimes they indicate that you have a hard layer of soil under the softer layer of soil. This can happen when you rototill. A much better way to soften your soil is to use any clear shampoo, like baby shampoo, to increase water penetration and soften the soil deeper down." I tilled last year because the yard was probably 4-6 inches too high. When It would rain, the patio would end up under water. I took out about that much dirt, and loosened up the soil even under that, then added topsoil. Baby shampoo wont kill the grass? How would I apply it? How have you been watering (when you water)? How often and how long when you do water? Here is probably my first issue. I planted the grass last October, threw the hay down, then 3 days later got married and went on a honeymoon, so… for the first 2 weeks, it never got watered, then the weather took a down turn and I was only able to start “caring” for it this spring. ----------------------- "How high/low are you mowing the grass?" If asking in inches, I’m not sure, I have not measured, but I have the mower set on the next to last highest setting (almost cutting it as high as possible).

you use the HTML CODE .. and on preview.. if you see it... we will see it ... it is not necessarily the third down ... but it is for you .. anyway ... direction of sun??? .. the smaller shrubs.. look like they are now shaded out.. as the poplars outgrew them ... and they aint happy about that ... also .... the poplars are probably sucking all the moisture out of the soil... in an area twice as large as the canopy above ... thats not a great pruning stub .. but that didnt kill the tree .. where is dad.. and how bad was last years heat and drought??? any recent construction .. how about a pic of the trunk at the ground ... a call to the county extension office.. might get you a quick answer about any plagues running thru the area.. in regard to poplar ... all that said.. poplar are an extremely fast growing.. short lived tree ... i wish dad had planted something better ,,, or at least every other tree a better tree... i planted sticks of poplar.. simply shoved them in the ground.. in 5 years they were 20 feet tall ... in 7 years.. they were gone ... as that was the last season i could do it myself with my chainsaw .. and they were already breaking down enough for me to realize that it was going to cost me money i didnt have.. if i didnt get rid of them ASAP ... but having figured this in advance.. i had planted many oak ... and they were nice sized.. by the time the poplar had to go .... ken

It certainly seems to have been a year of massively mislabeled bulbs! After having gone through most of the posts relating to this subject, I've concluded that this year was worse than any other! And it's not just the big box stores with pallets of boxes and kits of the cheaper common varieties, either... it's also a problem affecting the more elite bulb growers and companies that offer the lesser known varieties! I think it's mostly due to the re-popularization of the Hippeastrum! These bulbs seem to be enjoying another round in the spotlight, so to speak, and this prompts growers and sellers to hire more workers during the busier months of sales... these part-time, seasonal workers are inexperienced, and in the chaos of harvesting and preparing and shipping, a lot of bulbs are shipped out with the wrong tags attached! That's my take on the situation, anyway. If you look at the "big picture" of novelty and garden plants and how they've been bred and sold within the last ten years or so, you see that it's become all about the sale, and all about making the plants disposable so there are more sales... Those of us that actually take our Hippeastrums beyond the first Christmas bloom are a minority... I couldn't guess at a number, but I'd say that the majority of people buying "Amaryllis" bulbs and kits for the Holidays will bloom them out and pitch the remains. Just the fact that "garden amaryllis" are showing up in catalogs and on store shelves, some of them actually labeled as being hardy to zone 5, should tell us something about our society and how we've become dependent on instant gratification and how everything is made to be disposable! Oooo..ahhhh..it's like watching fireworks! You have managed to create lovely garden areas - the peach dahlia is gorgeous. And so is the owl! and all the wildlife, horse and dogs.

What a variety of flowers you have, and the colors all work together so well. You really have created something special.

I think I had the same response as schoolhouse. I was ooing and aahing over the Dahlias (do you know the names?) and then I was like "Oh my gosh, is that a real owl". How cool is that to see an owl in your yard and then have deer wondering up. Oh, and Boston Terriers are some of my favorite dogs! I can tell you've put a lot of hard work into your news gardens and it looks great.

Beautiful pictures and beautiful gardens! I have always wanted a log house, and this one is gorgeous! Your gardens are beautiful and go so well with the house. Maybe the big and small dogs can keep the deer away from anything they will fancy that you especially fancy too.

I love your pictures. What a joy to get the little owl's picture. Please keep posting.

First of all, WELCOME! Somehow I really can't believe that you started only a few years ago- you have laid everyting out like a pro! Your home and surroundings are lovely- I like how your garden compliments them.

Ok, so many wonderful things in your garden to comment about...
In the first picture, is that a 'Guizhou' Artemisia in the middle of the bed? Beautiful! I have moved mine all over the place and still it looks nowhere near as nice as yours.

Love your pets and wildlife! Is your little guy a Boston terrier? The neighbors down the street have two and they are such a kick to watch!

Love that peach colored dahlia too. Do you happen to know the name? What an great idea to use cedar rounds to make a pathway!
I could go on and on, but suspect I have rambled long enough for today!

Welcome! What a beautiful setting for your lovely house and gardens. We gardeners know how much time and energy went into making your new gardens in such a short time. The wildlife will be a special bonus, but I would definitely be checking out plants that deer do not favor. : ) We have deer that come out behind our house but they are some distance away and I have never seen them 'browsing' in my garden.

Holy Cow!! You did all that, and had a baby? I think we need to call social services!! lol. You couldn't have cared for a child and done all of that!! Beautiful job, and your brown-eyed lovelies add to the effect. Your have a great touch with your plant combos and path creation!

Welcome and what splendiferous gardens you have! Where in the country do you garden? Looks like you have an ideal cottage gardening climate. :)

BTW, I love your boston terrier. I have a little one named May. Wonderful breed.

Lovely setting, welcoming, and inviting. You've done a wonderful job with the gardens being just part of the natural setting, evidence by the animals who walk there.

Tell me about the orange/salmon colored dahlias. I have spot saved for these next year. What is the name of the variety?

Also love your little boston terrier. Reminds me of my granddaughter's pup named Murphy. They are sweet dogs.

Hello everyone,

It was SO nice to log on and find all these lovely comments! As you can see from the pics, we don't have a lot of people passing by here to admire the garden - it's nice to show someone who appreciates it:).

I sure wish I had held onto the name of that peach dahlia - I bought it at a local tuber sale a few years ago but didn't write down the name... I have learned to keep better records now :).

Well, yes, I have been busy this year! The pictures with the deer in the weeds are of the same garden one year ago - the deer is basically standing where the new veggie garden fence is now (which the owl likes to perch on). I spent so much time last summer staring at that mess while holding my new baby that as soon as he started to nap consistently I got busy! I ignored the very good advice to "sleep when the baby sleeps," and instead strapped on the baby monitor and got to work. It was probably just as refreshing as a nap :).

I have so many projects on the go all the time - are you all like this? I actually typed up a little list on the computer of fall tasks, and it's a little overwhelming... ha ha. However, picturing the garden next spring keeps it fun. I'm hoping I can do everything on that list; I just went back to teaching part time last week, so I'm a bit more divided this year. Oh well... gardens require patience I suppose.

Anyway, thanks again for all the compliments. It made my day! You all have beautiful gardens too - I've been studying them for months and drawing inspiration from all of you.

Cedarglen, welcome and thank you so much for sharing such wonderful pictures of your garden. A Barred owl perching on your fence? That is just outstanding! I have one that calls from the woods behind my house but I've never seen him. What an absolute treat that must be for you! It looks like you have a regular nature preserve there. What a beautiful, amazing transformation in such a short time!

Lovely gardens!

How tall is your fence around the garden? We have deer, but so far they haven't been too much problem. They are sampling some of my roses, but it's mostly the babies I think, because they take one bite and move on. Nothing much is blooming right now, so I'm hoping they just think they're more shrubs.

Your horse is beautiful. What's his/her name?

What a lovely property you have there! You are doing a great job and I'm amazed at how much you are able to accomplish with all you have to take care of. New baby a horse, pets and a garden. Cedarglen - you have a gorgeous garden and I love the wildlife - what a very delightful place to raise your young family. From one who has raised children while gardening and now has grandchildren there is nothing more rewarding than seeing them playing in the dirt, picking flowers and getting excited over a butterfly. Sorry I didn't comment earlier - Welcome!!! Those are some amazing gardens you've put together! (It's probably a good thing you got so much done this past year, since once the baby is mobile, you may have a harder time getting stuff done! And just wait until the naps come to an end!)
