Ficus Benjamina - Leaves falling after trimming

I live in Puerto Rico (Tropical weather) and I planted the side of the backyard with Ficus Benjamina. The ficus are about 7ft tall extend 110 feet (The length of one side of the backyard). I planted them about 2 years ago and they have grown beautifully until recently when I trimmed the side and top of them and about 1 1/2 month later a lot of them are losing their leave but not in the top section of the ficus just below the top portion. The ficus don't have white fly and the leaves looks good. Can the tree suffer some stress after the trimming? Need help since I will hate to lose this ficus. I been putting some fertilizer and I am watering the leave about twice a week.
