Well, as much as I like them, I never thought I would ever think my favorite during a season would be daylilies. But, the woodchucks did not touch them and it was for quite a time the only color/flowers in the garden. Since I get woodchucks fairly often I bought a ton more daylilies this summer and scattered them throughout the beds.

How about grass. Didn't have to mow for 6 weeks.

Yes ! They were gorgeous this year here, too. My daylily foliage is still beautiful even now. What a workhorse plant ! I have the old fashioned orange ones my sweet uncle digs up & brings to me by the carloads.

Grass ? Hahaha. I only have weeds... Woodchucks are freaky fellas. Big too. Scary. Once - one chased me beating his tail on the ground ! They are fast runners ! I was screaming like a schoolgirl ! HAhaha !

I googled is a woodchuck same as a groundhog- found an article- comments had me peeing my psnts ... Dang ! There IS something worse than voles!!! ThymetoDig !!!! My condolences !!!

My favorite plant this year was the Lily,..one lot in particular cast a scent throughout the garden,..i think its named "Rialto",..they came up in an area where i don't recall planting any,..it took me some time to figure out just where the scent was coming from,..the scent was like Sweet Alyssum only stronger.

The big one was 40 pounds. My DH used to like to sneak up on him and scare him half to death. I would sneak up and clang a ladle against a pot and scare the dickens out of him. But alas, I think the eats in my garden were too good to leave, so he kept coming back. Then there were two.......now there are none. The damage they do is incredible in just a short time. He would devour my front garden and when it was all eaten to the ground would move to the back. By the time he was done in the back, the front would have grown in a little, so he would move back out front to start the eating cycle again. And so it went all spring and summer. If only there was a way I could channel them to do some proper pruning of the perennial garden. I think I need a woodchuck whisperer! I have voles too and at least in my garden they pale in comparison to what a single woodchuck can do.

What my gardens had gone through this year. High winds and flash floods. Cover with mud and corn stalks. Kiss me over garden gate. It still looks pretty

Since I just had pots all season , I have to say the black and blue salvia I had potted up. For some weird reason the million bells up and died abruptly in the same pot. The hummers also enjoyed it ! It's still going strong .

Right now, my garden is really a mess! LOL I need to move everything pretty soon....but at this moment, the barberry is absolutely beautiful :)

I just love my zinnias this year. They have been incredibly gorgeous and healthy.. My friend says they even look iridescient. I'll hate to see them come to an end. the seeds came from Swallowtail, and no I don't work there.

Flowergirl, I was really happy with seeds ordered from swallowtail a couple years ago.
I usually start zinnias inside from seed but this year decided to purchase six packs from a local nursery. They did terribly! I'm really not sure why but they were so unhealthy I finally ripped all of them out. Would love to see pics of your favorite zinnias this year!

Philip, I had wonderful oriental lilies all in front of my porch one year and then realized I was highly allergic to them. Darn! Moved to asiatic, but we have a red lily beetle over here that devour them. Do you have those over there? And my chipmunks used to shimmy up the stalks and bite off the buds. Needless to say, I no longer have any lilies!

Sorry to see you were allergic to Oriental Lillies,.. its amazing how ever old we are,.."speaking of myself of course",..that we still discover things that we are allergic to,..about the Red Lily Beetle,..the first sighting of one over here was back in 2011 but they are not so widespread,..so far,..no Chipmunks or Woodchucks,..alas we have Leaf Cutter Bees.

Can I have 2? I'm always searching for long blooming blue/lavender/ purple companion plants (workhouse types like cranesbill rozanne.) I have 2 promising candidates-nepeta blue dragon bloomed well from late June-early August (and now is developing red fall foliage-huge unexpected bonus!) and in early August I picked up a salvia Mesa azure which is still looking fresh and blooming I expect through end of October. I also grew a few agastache (blue boa-wow!) for first time this year. I do not like the foliage fragrance of the salvia & catmint (bleh) but I LOVE the agastache. Wish the agastache bloomed longer...
