Wrap Them Up or Bring Them In?

Hello everyone!

I have been adding to my collection and now have 4 figs in pots. Two of them are 'fig sticks' that I hope will take root. The other two have leafed out but have not produced yet.

Now that all the leaves are gone, should I take them inside or is there some way I can put them close to the building on the deck where its sunny? Should I wrap them up, pot and all?

Conventional wisdom in the North Eastern U.S.A. is to place containerized figs in an unheated attached garage (or something similar) to overwinter. Depending on how severe the winter is, some folks will wrap their fig plants in the garage as well. I live in zone 6a and place my figs in my garage unwrapped and have not lost a plant yet.

By the way I don't know what you mean about 'fig sticks.' If you are try to root cuttings or need more information about wrapping trees I recommend you search this forum for previous posts. There is a ton of good information within.

Thanks. I don't have a garage so I'll have to haul them to the basement. I do wrap my inground figs. I was just wondering if the micro climate close to the house would be sufficient protection.
By 'fig sticks' I mean cuttings that a neighbor had given me. In the past I have simply put these 'sticks' in a tub of soil and they have rooted. I was hoping to achieve them same results with these. I am told they are an elongated brown variety.

Here's what I do: I get little or big tomato cages, depending on the size of the vine.. Stuff the cage into the pot, and wrap the vine around the cage. I like to keep as much length as I can wrapped around the cage- then when I move I can take most of it with me. So I'd just wrap 'em up & bring 'em in.

Thanks Kenn, this is my third year with the Blues and they have never left the general area of my yard and the neighbors yards before when feeding the fledglings. These parents are now carrying the worms a good 1/4 to 1/2 mile away!! Only the parents are coming to eat not any fledglings, they will be 2 weeks out of the nestbox tomorrow. I had a talk with mom and dad twice today about this. As they came to check out the dishes, they will sit and wait for me to fill them if they are empty - sitting about 15 ft from me, I told them I wouldn't keep filling up the dishes for them unless they bring their babies for me to see. LOL! So far it didn't work. The first week they did just keep them in the trees in our yard, this week NOT. We have five acres but they are across a huge field now in a different small wooded area with lots of power lines around. I am sure they are teaching them hunting skills but you would think they would let them come to the feeder. It is almost like they don't want them to see the feeder and get free food. That is awful. What state are you in, just curious. A friend of mine told me the other day he wanted to get a couple of cats and keep them outdoors to deal with mice. I tried to talk some sense into him but to tell you the truth I think mice are icky.

Wow you greenhouse looks nice and packed, Laura! Bummer about that ponytail Palm, but at least it went to a good home. It was such a giant already. Always glad to see your trees. Bringing the plants back out is always the best! Thanks all, I'm getting ready to sow some more seeds so the brood will be growing. Thanks Pagan, that E. obesa is seed grown baby. MY figs are against the house blocked from the wind.
I had a Alma that didn't fruit so I left it uncovered.
It dried out.
It is so cold here in North Jersey. Tonight we have a "feels like" of 10 dergrees. So far, because of laziness, I have only put leaves and a blanket over my Celeste. I hope I didn't hurt it yet. I need to add more protection. So trial and error will bring results.

Well, I just hauled them in. Either they're getting heavier or I'm getting older!
I haven't covered my in ground figs yet...I may not. I seem to loose the tips of branches every year no matter how well I wrap them. They're in an open area of my backyard and the wind and rain always seems to get through the layers of wrap.
Beacause of this I have been pruning in the spring. Any of you pruning your trees now?
