Slightly OT...finally painting house

Thought some of you might like to see what we are "attempting" to do with our home. The front porch is really a challenge. I posted on the Home Decorating form as I was looking for input on color placement, to either confirm what I was doing or give advice to change. Be warned...there are lots of pictures! So if any of you want to chime in, your thoughts are more than welcome! See link below.

To stay garden related, you can see some of the sad looking beds around the house. Fall is fast approaching and I have pretty much abandoned the gardens in "favor" (?) of painting!

I think either option could work, but when i bought I preferred my house being one neutral color (turns out i didnt like the color eventually but i can live with it). Sometimes mixing the colors from the card is a little harder when you have to pick the right shade for the right light. Maybe a neutral like SW Universal Khaki or Macadamia in the main living areas and a shade lighter for the bedrooms or vice versa. It really depends on the light. I hear BM Shaker Beige being suggested a lot as well. IMHO either option would be better than leaving it as is. A buyer will probably over-exaggerate the cost to repaint and deeply discount their offer which will be a lot less than what it will cost you to paint the house. And since you're trying to sell, you may not need to invest in the top of the line paint. The mid-grade formulas from those lines will probably be sufficient.

Would love to see pics of a 1919 craftsman house - garish colors and all! Assuming you still have the original wood intact and unpainted (hopefully?) you actually want a color with some "oomph" to stand up to the strong presence of the wood. Wimpy light grays or whites would actually look dingy and blah in combination with the wood. The buckram + hyacinth should be fine, if you have doubts test it on at least a 4 x 4 size panel you can move around and look at under various lighting conditions.

Living in a log home myself, I wouldn't paint the wood cabinets. And in fact, in just about any home, I would not do it. I do understand about perhaps too much wood... but my interior walls are sheetrock with lots of wood trim. So... I paint the sheetrock, not the wood. I like the green quartz choice - parts of my kitchen counters are somewhat similar, form Viatera. But green inclusions with brown flecks. I find that it works in a good log environment. My other counter is Luna Eco from Silestone, which from a distance looks white. Personally, in a log home I can't want to paint any trim or cabinets. I'd find the best stain tone, instead. (My interior stain is all "natural" toned - just a hint darker than when the logs were cut.)

Thank you for all the feedback. It is really helpful. We really don't plan on going anywhere, which makes me think that I need to choose what will make us most happy for living her another 20 years. I suppose we can take the paint off down the road if it just isn't working out. The contractor wants to get the ceiling painted first before floors and cabinets just because it is easier for them. But we can tell them we want to go slow. I have my heart set on the wood floors and we found something that all 7 of us (hubby and 5 daughters) all like. They are all really wanting to try the painted ceilings too. The girls are ready for a house change (teenagers) and so I think we might just go for it. I found these photos from another log house remodel that look like what we are aiming for. The sink we have now is an 1920's farmhouse that I found at a flea market. I love the look but it is really stained beyond what we can afford to repair. We've been "test driving" it to see if we want to invest in the special sink base we would need. But it hasn't been very comfortable to use... stains easily, small drain, dishes chip easily even with a grid in the bottom. So we are going to put in a new farmhouse sink and keep this one for a work sink elsewhere.

Mary lu - I missed this! Your house is gorgeous, and no 'wanna be'. It is a painted lady. I had thought that before I got to that part of the post! Very cool. I say your instincts are bang on!

Annette and Nancy, thanks for taking a look. It really has been/is a struggle to try and get the right colors, in the right place. Weather permitting we will be painting next week as DH took vacation to do his most favorite thing(not)....paint! Hopefully will get a lot done.

The colours look gorgeous. They are a very good match for a Victorian house from that period. It is not too ornate or busy at all!!!!!! Tell your DD to research Victorians! LOL!

Mary Lu, you know I love your house and I think the colors you've selected are absolutely beautiful and in keeping with the spirit of the place. I can't really give an informed opinion about the proportions of the different colors, since I'm not used to the type of painting American houses seem to have, but whatever the proportion you decide upon I think will be lovely. Plus I love "Grandma Green" :-)

Mary Lu - Sorry I took so long to take a look at this thread! I really love where you are going with this project, tho I'm sure I'd be scratching my own head about the porch colors.

krycek 1984, thanks! although I'm not sure about the Victorian. I do believe that when she was converted from a school to a home, the intent was to give her some of the embellishments of a victorian. The bay and front porch do point in that direction.

chloe92su, we are hard at work. Should have progress pictures later in the week. DH took vacation this week to paint.

Eduarda, yup, that "grandma green" again. Just love it and had to incorporate it. Wouldn't be right not to! So nice to see you popping in. Many of the old timers seem to be missing.

irene dsc, the head scratching continues, but getting less as we progress. Thank goodness...otherwise I might have been bald!
