I have to worry about thieving coyotes too?

Just got Condit's book The Fig and in it, he writes how California's coyotes RELISH figs!

Well, sad to say, my plans for my figs include planting them in the pasture within a stone's throw from a well-used coyote path.....

We have lost many a cat over the years but I didn't think I would be losin' figs to 'em too.

Ain't livin' in the country grand?

Anyone with coyote thieves?

You will drive yourself nuts if you keep worrying about what will eat your figs. Gophers, golfers, coyotes. Just plant your figs and hope for the best. I have over 400 trees just south of you in Placerville out in my nursery and nothing has bothered them yet. I'd worry more about your neighbors jumping the fence into your orchard. Plant'em and care for them. After that, mother nature will do to them as she so desires. Good luck. I'm sure you will make out just fine. FF

native maypop. I found it growing native here and have transplanted a lot of it to my butterfly garden. I have seen these bugs for awhile, but weren't sure what they were. I see them a lot on my roses, I wonder if they suck the life out of them too:) But they are kinda cute and I'm glad they don't bother the caterpillars. They can suck on all the passion fruit they want. I've just been picking them off and tossing them in the compost pile.

Yes, the heat can be a concern. They probably wont die unless neglected a long time but heat of 90F will stress them. It can quickly get up to 120 in a greenhouse when it is warm outside. The essentially stop growing much after about 92F (enzymes/proteins) start to degrade. A little heat stress as a hardening process would not be a bad thing (90F for a few hours). Just make sure they have plenty of water, some air movement and the heat doesn't last too long. Warm humid conditions with little air flow could increase disease problems.

If you asked me what I worry about I would have many things. But when you ask about things I worry too much about I would have too say nothing. I deal with most things head on. If I have something worrying me it is usually only until I can do something about it. If there is nothing I can do about something I don't waste time worrying. Now I do get mad however. I am angry about the direction this country is taking. I am mad that my kids will be left to pick up the pieces. I am mad that their personal liberties are being taken away one by one and all that they work so hard for will be given to those that sit on their butts.

The water from the container can be applied to soil without spraying, allowing the water to flow onto the surface of the soil. This is the same method used when applying gray water to crops; the water is not bad for the soil, you just want to avoid getting it on the plant top. Almost all second and third year trees. Nothing over 5', yet. Mostly 2' to 3 1/2' trees. Some 4' to 5'. Almost all in 5 gallon pots. Next year should be a pretty good breakout in growth. FF

What varieties are you growing? Wholesale? Retail? Personal orchard?........ Too nosy? sorry.
Maybe we could get a pic of them in the Spring? I'm sure they will be beautiful.

For the past three seasons it has been strictly a hobby. I love eating figs, and growing the trees is a passion to me. Unfortunatly, you can only keep just so many fig trees as pets on 1 1/2, water well fed, acres (and alot of that has a house and all the other stuff a property has on it) before you realize that you will soon run out of room and have to part with more than a few. I grow cuttings from old farm and wild trees. Some may be new varieties. Out of well over 400 trees, I have only about 6 that I purchased from nurseries that are supposedly identified varieties (Kadota, Celeste, Mission). I will be selling trees from my nursery next summer, but only after I determine that the specific tree is parthenocopic (self fruiting). I have several interesting varieties that I have grown from trees that have figs that I have never seen anywhere else before. FF
