and that makes me happy ... it is good to see some young blood in the gardening world ...

I spotted you, Ken! A nice tour, thanks Jonathan. It makes me feel a little better about missing the festivities last summer.
Things are looking, good, Ken! The third and fourth pics from the end, is that Pinus densiflora 'Golden Ghost', 'Oculus Draconis' or something else? I love it!

I'd like to get ID on some of the succeeding pictures, like the four directly after the Ken/elephant picture, then there's Ken's 'Rheingold', then interested to know about the next one, the narrow blue spruce, then there's Juniperus communis 'Compressa', skip down to the last two, what are they please?

I think you should take Ken up on his offer and return in the spring to chronicle bud break in Ken's garden for us, your pictures are very enjoyable. :^)

Ken, I also think that #11 is a Picea pungens 'iseli Fastigiate' which will get wider as it ages.
It seems that 'Blue Totem' is more nattow then...

#14 Your's is a 'Contorta', this one has straight branches and twisted needles.
'Torulosa' has both twisted.

#17 is difficult to see if it's speckled with gold patches.
If so, then it is 'Filifera Aureovariegata'...

#18, Your Abies balsamea 'Rangely Blue' does have a nice blue-ish colour!
I guess your wife and girldfriends like that cultivar name too ;0)

#20, Picea pungens 'Glauca Pendula' is right for a trade name.
In reality it is Picea pungens forma glauca 'Pendula'.

#28 Platycladus orientalis 'Aurea Nana' is the right full name.

#30 The cultivar name for your's is 'Suecica Aurea' which is green in winter and yellow in spring and summer.
'Gold Cone' is slower growing and shoes it's yellow colour the whole year...

#35 Picea abies 'Cranstonii' because it's upper side branches are curved.
The one's at a 'Viminalis' will grow horizontal...

Please make the corrections in your database this time, so for a next tour you can inform your visitors in a right way :0)

Two questions Ken.

So if it's the Marek collection you are Ken Marek? Marek, Mirek, Malik it all gets a bit confusing.

'Rangely Blue' does it have a geographical or other name origin? I keep thinking it's 'Strangely Blue' with a couple of letters lost off a label maybe which would be more of a nickname origin perhaps. Just idle speculation.

dad's parents came over in 1914 and 1916 respectively ... from poland ...

his father.. my grandfather was Jon Kaczmarek ..

somewhere along the way.. my father.. as i tell the story.. changed himself from a Pole.. to an Englishman.. by truncating his name to Marek ... to wit.. no body spells it the right way .. lol .. wanting to double the r's.. and and ick's ... etc ... to Anglicize it.. for lack of a better term ...

so yes.. all the derivations that confuse you.. are all regionally correct .. lol .. i am with them in geographic history ...

i tell people to spell it as a female horse with a k at the end ...

there will that story set me apart ... lol ..

as to the Rangley blue .. there is a post down the GW page a bit.. about its seedling history ...

Glad the pics came out well. It was an enjoyable visit, though my feet were freezing by the time I left. I'll definitely be back in the spring - I mean, where else am I to get scions from? =P

naw.. you dont have too ... i did the work ... i felt guilty assigning you all that homework ... so i sucked it up.. and i did it ...

though.. you might want to rename your pix ... on your hard drive.. should you someday wish to know what they are ... e.g.my pix are uploaded with the date ... some weird camera gook .. so i truncate the gook and add the name in front of the date .. such as :

Picea abies 'Mucronata' 20121228 Ken 001

or some such .. the beauty is that when i move them all to the conifer folder.. they are first in alpha order.. then date order.. and often there is a 3 digit code after.. and if i take 5 pix ... that code goes up sequentially ...

dont overwork yourself.. play with the 10 month old babe ... priorities man!!!!
