I totally hear you. I am currently 3 weeks into a 4 week promise to my husband to not buy ANY clothes or plants. The clothes I can handle, but not buy any plants for a month? What was I thinking! He's always nagging me (lovingly, of course) about how much (money) I'm sending out and how many (plants) I'm bringing in... So I was an idiot and promised him (yes, it was MY idea...) that I wouldn't buy any clothes or plants for a month. I started feeling some genuine pain over it after week one, but week two was a little better, but now at week three, all I can think about is which nursery centers I'm going to go to in one more week! Problem here is, fall is the BEST time for gardening. (California-- San Francisco bay area-- usda zone 10a, sunset zone 17). So EVERYTHING will be stocked, and looking quite good. Maybe I should just take some cash and leave the credit cards at home? LOL

I did it again today!
We went to the Colorado National Monument today, and there was a greenhouse on the way, and I stopped in just to look,
and ended up spending $35.00! Until they all close, I think it's a losing battle!

He didn't mention the plants anymore after that.

Ladies, there is a way to stop: buy a small retirement cottage with a garden area 8x16 feet! (See Morning Glory vines - ouch!)

Do I regret moving to a small home? No. Do I regret giving up my big, beautiful garden? Yes, yes...oh, yes!

Since it's the end of the growing season here there are so many good sales. How can you stay away? :)

I hear ya! I was at Home Depot stocking up on potting soil in preparation for all the winter sowing I'll do with my cottage seeds from the swap. Well, four mums came home with me, too. No idea how they hopped in my car and in my trunk. But when I pulled in the driveway, they made themselves right at home.

Applegate, even with a relatively small urban garden, I still can't stop buying. When I run out of in-ground places, I start thinking up--up the stairs, on the deck, up the fence.

That's why this forum is so great--If I can't work on my garden, I can work on someone else's, even if only in my mind.

Always remember that when you are buying plants on sale, that you are actually saving money, and also helping to keep the economy strong!!!

That's my story and I'm sticking with it. :-)

Fall is the best time to plant around here, also.

Looks like I belong in this thread also. My late husband and I retired to this area of the country because of 4 season gardening. I need a bumper sticker that says "I break for garden centers". Each year I love the fall plantings more and more and am learning how to have pretty color all year round. Off to the garden center now for mums, snapdragons, dianthus, pansies, violas, ornamental kales, various cool weather veggie seedlings.

I'm in the same boat as all of you. Although, I have vowed to myself that after the butterfly garden is planted (waiting for plants to arrive any day now) I'm only going to buy one Buxus 'Valdar Valley' and learn to propogate them for the hedge I need.
After estimating how many I'd need to enclose my rose/herbal garden (about 14) I figured propagation would be the cheapest way to do this. At $12.50 a pop, I don't have much choice.
Other than plants I'm really hooked on pots - big ones, small ones, cement, stone, terra cotta - it doesn't much matter. I want lots of them all over my back patio and here and there throughout my garden. It never ends!
And when I'm not gardening (or salivating at the nearest garden center) I'm usually reading gardening books or magazines. My sanity returns in winter, when gardening is no longer an option.

I have already spent my plant money for September, but then I go into Wallyworld this weekend and there is beautiful yellow hibiscus. And its marked down and it would be PERFECT for a pot I am working on.

So I get an AHA! moment. I cruised over to the candy aisle and found a big bag of DH's candy that was about the same price as the plant. I am sinking to new lows here-now I am bribing DH with candy to satisfy my plant cravings!

And yes, it worked! lol!!!

I wasn't able to spend any money on plants this weekend! a first in several months! But only because I spent all day saturday at Rock Jam, and all day sunday planting 18 rose bushes a neighbor took out and gave to me!

I did check Walmart's plant section on my way in to get groceries this week, and there wasn't anything left, or I would've bought something!
