Whew It's Been HOT here.....

We have already had 10 plus days of over 100 degree temps here and it has been down right miserable outside. Throw in the humidity and it makes it worse. Finally today we had a break in temps and a little much needed rain! We are on a watering ban right now and we are not supposed to be doing any watering outside. It's crazy! I have been enjoying everyone's pictures even if I am not able to post. Here are my recent blooms.

Purple Mound - The color on this one really stands out among all my purples. The best by far. It has a velvety look to it.

Talledaga - Still doesn't look quite like the picture on the Floyd Cove website but it is getting better.

That Away - Had to get this Hanson daylily because it is different.

Victorian Lace

Autumn Romance - A bonus from Blueridge. It is one of his intros and it holds up really well in the heat.

Claudine's Charm - One of my favorites.

Music Monkey - Got this one from Phil Korth and I was a little disappointed in the first bloom. It is supposed to have a red eye. I am hoping it will get better. I think it is just too darn hot.

Last Snowflake - FFO opened up really well. I love this one. I noticed a little more yellow to it than I thought it would have. It held up really well in the heat.

Sulled Up Ol' Possum - this was a bonus from Mary Jane Meadows. It was really hard to capture the colors on this one. It really surprised me.

Glad you got a bit of rain Dianne, maybe there's more on the way for you.
Your dl's are lovely...they don't seem to mind the heat very much. :)
We had a little break here from the heat and high humidity too... down into the upper 60's last night and felt so good outside this morning.
Take it easy in the heat, and I hope you get more rain and relief from the temps soon.

Nice daylilies, can't pick a favorite. I share the same sentiments with Jan, hope you find some relief from the heat and especially humidity soon. Around here, it's been a pretty cool June. Only a week of hot temps (80's and 90's being hot for Ohio) and today and tomorrow, temps only in the 60's. Feels good, but would like it a little warmer. I'll try to fan some of our cool air down your way.

Hi and I should introduce myself... I pop in maybe once a year or so. I currently garden in the Houston area (zone 9) but have also lived in south Texas (9/10 depending on who asks.) I have a west-facing balcony over a parking lot, and my balcony temps generally top out at 103F *almost daily* from May to Sept. Talk about a heat island. I find that a big part of what lives and what dies is the size of the pot. Only succulents will live in 6 inches or smaller unless you're religious about watering (and sometimes even if you are!) and/or they get some shade. Ten inches and bigger does much better - a lucky accident, for me, that my $2 herbs lived but my $20 citrus trees survived. I have 2 citrus (meyer lemon, satsuma 'kimborough'), fig 'celeste,' pomegranate (p. compacta) which got a little toasty while we were away a week and lost most of its leaves but has buds for next year. Rose 'Pink Knockout,' which is buggy right now but keeps growing despite it. Basil in a 2-gallon did pretty well. I do like succulents... actually wish I could grow more because my balcony is half-shaded, so I don't have lots of full-sun space, and it's already full. So some other reccomendations: Bouganvilla. Loves it hot! My mom has these on her arid, toasty west patio. Caveat: they take a while to settle if you molest their roots, don't like really windy spots, and they're thorny. Sweet Potato vine. But it's very thirsty. Tradescantia 'purple heart.' Ok, so it's a big viney weed, but the color is gorgeous in full/partial sun: lightly fuzzy purple leaves with almost turquoise tones beneath. Kalanchoe blossifeldiana: okay, it's a succulent, but it has such great flowers. It *almost* looks like a normal plant. Lemongrass. that is, I'm sure it would do great, if my cats would just stop eating it. The praying mandids eat other bugs, not plants. Keep those guys around. Unglazed clay pots would have the advantage of cooling those roots a few degrees when water evaporates through the pores. obviously you need to water more often because of this. I use a chipped-wood mulch on my bigger pots. You're right, pebbles will probably just heat it up more. Now my biggest problem is finding plants that tolerate that heat *in the shade,* which is my last frontier. I got some wax begonias, a davalia fern, an anthurium and a fittonia to go out in the summer. The orchids can go out some of the time; I'm going to put some tubs of water under the shelves to raise humidity. I've got kind of zone confusion with the mediterranian/desert thing going on above the ledge and a woodsy-jungly thing below. But mostly... I don't want to think about it too much. It's been warm even now... I'm outside putting up with the dark laptop screen because it's actually *cool!* for once. BTW I love your screen name. But please tell me you don't *really* drown children! :)

Youth is such an uncomplicated period in our life. Too bad we never fully appreciated it. Because we knew so little it seemed life was really a challenge. I too sat with my neighbor kids in the shade and waited for the ring-a-ling of the Good Humor bicycle cart (now who is giving away age). At other times we might have been enemies but during the dog-days of summer we were friends in the shade. By 11am the power from ComEd has so deteriated in quality from load that my computer system UPS unit kicks out and doesn't restore until 9pm. It doesn't make any difference whether I have heavy loads (my AC, TVs etc.) on or not so it must be area-wide. Talk to you tonight - it's a good excuse to take a mid-day nap. Les

Hi Clara (and Pamela and Leahcate)! I just saw your post. My sister was just here and she quilts (I don't). Quilting is so intricate and detailed that I wouldn't even be able to get started, least of all enjoy it! My hat is off to you for realizing it's supposed to be fun. Clara, I haven't really found any forums for support, but decided to do what I knew how to do when I was first diagnosed. (There were a few on the cooking forum who helped me out initially.) I jumped immediately into an old Weight Watcher's diet until I got Diabetes nutrition education, along with my blood testing kit. I felt like I was flying blind until I started testing my Blood Glucose (BG), but after that was easily able to see the correlation between what I was eating and how it affected me. What's important are Little Meals, with some protein always included, with definite snacks in-between keep your BG more stable. I've been eating apples with a little peanut butter, or celery with PB or cheese. You'll have to limit your carbs and spread them out throughout the day...it's amazing how many carbs are in a large apple! I started actively reading labels and seeing how much a portion was (much less than I had been enjoying.) Google Diabetic Gourmet Magazine; there is good information there, and I periodically check to remind myself of how important it is keep tight control of Diabetes. My doctor suggested ''Diabetes for Dummies'' which was very helpful to me. I still pull it out to read when I have a question about something. There's some good info on the Mojo thread about the Glycemic Index (good carbs that are slower to raise BG), which helped me a lot. The thing you have to do is eat! Then wait two hours before you eat again. If you'd like a support buddy, please e-mail me (My Page) and we'll chat. I know how overwhelming it is at first, but once you push through this and get regulated with meds/diet, you'll have so much energy you'll feel like your old (in my case very old!) self. Thanks you Holly. Lets all think Spring...Can't hurt, can it? Shingles are tough for everyone. Sherry, I will agree. I had so much pain for 10 days (not typical) that I had resigned myself to having trigeminal neuropathy and am actually relieved it is shingles since they should eventually clear up. Maryl, I was lucky to see the doctor an start on Famcyclovir the day I broke out and am hoping it will clear up faster. I will see eye doctor today since it appears to be in my eye. (Can't so the simple thing anytime it seems). Life is always a ride...not always good or bad but problems are just part of it. I hope you are are doing well and the weather will finally clear up and let us have spring. kay

DIXIELAND BAND with that white in it is very showy. I really like that. LAST SNOWFLAKE would be my second favorite.

For having such a heat wave, your daylilies seem to be doing pretty good. I know it's got to be tough to wait out the drought though, especially with a water ban. I feel for you and will pray that it ends soon.

I can sympathize with you on the heat Diane, it is unbearable here, the only thing growing is the weeds.

Your daylilies are wonderful, they don't seem to mind the heat at all.

It is very hot here, too.99 and with the humidity,makes it feel like 110..We had a break yesterday with the temp staying in mid to upper 80's,but,its back up there today..That PURPLE MOUND is soo pretty,and AUTUMN ROMANCE is very pretty, too,but my favorites are VICTORIAN LACE and LAST SNOWFLAKE.Those are absolutely beautiful.Hope you get a break from the heat and needed rain, too,and here, too.

You have a lot of pretty ones! The first year I had Last Snowflake growing in a pot, it looked more yellow. The second year when it was planted in the ground, it whitened up a lot. These really caught my eye: Claudine's Charm, Victorian Lace, That Awy and Purple Mound. Thanks for sharing your photos!

You have an awesome variety of DLs, and it looks like they are doing well, despite the heat!

(BTW, my fans are taking off nicely - thanks!)

I've added Autumn Romance to my wish list. I like the reddish-purple EZ w/matching edge against the golden yellow bloom w/deeper yellow throat.

Last Snowflake is already on my list, but I'm putting a * next to it, since it seems to perform so well all over the country, even in your heat!

Thanks for showing your beauties, and I hope you get rain and relief from the heat soon!

I love Claudine's Charm, but there are several I wouldn't mind having in my garden! I should have Kwanzo, a friend gave me one but I haven't a clue where it is. Maybe the single flowering form took it over. Your picture is lovely of that one.

Nice pictures. Put Last Snowflake into a bigger pot if you are only growing in pots like me. Mine is now in a pot approx. 15 gallons maybe 20. It is huge now and making huge flowers.

Thanks everyone. I have plans to plant my daylilies that are in pots in the ground this fall when it starts cooling off. It seems like I am constantly having to move the pots around to do yard work and they out grow the pots so fast. Dot, a 20 gallon pot sure seems big but I bet it gives the daylilies plenty of room to grow.

Jan, the secret to keeping my daylilies looking decent is that I have continued to water them daily. If I didn't water the one's in pots everyday, I think they would be in sad shape since it is so hot here. The one's in pots seem to need quite a bit more water than the one's in the ground.

Julie, glad to hear your daylilies are doing well. I am thinking about getting together a list of daylilies that I may be interested in trading and if I do, I will be posting over on the exchange & trade thread. There is one that I really really want (Asian Fairy Bluebird) but I think it will be hard to find as far as trades go. We will see. Maybe I can tempt someone with one of my Stamile 09 intros.

Debra, I am glad to hear about Last Snowflake turning whiter as it gets settled in. It is still blooming for me here.

How did I miss this? Well, hot or not your daylilies are looking very good. I even love the Kwanso Twins. Actually, I think Kwanso is very nice if its planted off somewhere by itself were it will not get into any trouble spreading. At the house on the far corner of my street they have a big clump of it growing by the driveway in front and it looks wonderful each year when it blooms.

Music Monkey, geezz, doesn't look anything like the picture on Phil Korth's website, I sure hope it improves for you.

Everything else looks wonderful. My favorite of your pictures would be Autumn Romance, very, very lovely.
