just a quick hello

Hi everyone just thought id say love this site.I'm from eastern ontario canada. a canadian EH!! married into a very Italian family. with 2 fig trees. father inlaw passed 3 years ago and have inherited his figs in ground on his property. not sure what kind as I'm brand new at this. killed them 2 yrs. in a row... LOL learned from here I think I over cooked them in the winter...Must have done something right this winter because 1 actually survived pretty good it even fruited although the birds got them all.

Anyways been thinking of taking the young one that did not suvive but did come back this summer and may pot it so I can put it in the garage in winter. And continue to wrap the 1 that survived. Just kind of an experiment???? I have access to clean 45gal. plastic drums I was thinking of cutting in 1/2 as a pot. any comments or suggestions would be great....

Any More than 10 Gallons of poting soil,is very Havy to move around.
The 5 to 10 Gallon buried 4 inches ingrownd with draining holes,on side close to bottom so roots will grow in grownd every year,is a much better choice in the long run.
On the other hand the half barrel do not have to necesary be full of potting soil,just so much as you can handle yourself.
So yes you can use half Barrel to plant in.
And you can bury it 4 inches inground too.
The fruit will be much tastier if fig,can feed from the sorrounding soil+ it will not depend on you for regular watering and nutrients.

Oh my gosh, I'm not the only crazy one then....lol. I only started maybe 5 years ago with a few and then kept buying, I had over 300 last year, but I ended up getting sick and didn't water very often. I have a bed under pine trees and most of them didn't make it last year, so I have around 250ish right now. And yes feeling better and watering more. I have to keep moving things around as they get bigger they start crowding each other out. I am new and wasn't aware of the dreaded virus which I recently found, so I am watching very closely now. I am NOT done with collecting as I keep finding new ones that I don't have. The only thing is my dappled shade and shade areas are all taken up, I'm TRYING to figure things out with more sun. Wow, to Babka, bk, and moccasinlanding having that many hostas in plants, I can only imagine it takes you a long time to water, but then again can't be any worse than what we have to do. Love the spansih moss is it??? In the photo?? I can't wait to have mature plants....most of mine are still immature. LOVE the forum already!!

Thanks everyone! I just got back from the finish line of the Oklahoma FreeWheel. Since I had driven some friends down, I had to go and get them again. Went yesterday after work, and stayed the last night, with the dinner and party. What a hoot. Then drove up to Kansas, and waited for everyone to arrive. Drove back to OKC with Mel. Am at my daughters right now. She will take me over to Judy's, where my car is parked as soon as I had my internet fix. LOL The house is not happening. Back when we bought, our inspector recommended some work in the structure repair department to be done, but it never was done. These peoples inspector painted a much darker picture, and they want their earnest money back. Rats. Guess we will have to invest some money/time to get it fixed and try again. I am in Columbia Falls. Will ride around Montana just a bit, and will be in Missoula around 2 or three days. Today is Friday. We ended up going up Logan pass without a rest day, cause of chances of rain and wind. Way to hard for me, and I decided to abandon the others and head back. Mel came back with me. We took a day off, and drove a rented car to Canada, where we even found and visited the others. What a HOOT. More as I know it.
