overview first ... used to be a line of apples trees ... 6 here.. 6 to the right of the bed.. bed built to avoid having to mow over the stumps ... one left for kids to climb on ... i cant wait until i can kill it ...

Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Baby Blue Ice' .. these are all mini's... or close... when buying small ones... it usually takes along time to form some concept of appreciation.. when they are barely higher than your boot .. this thing is awesome in this pic... i am going to have to lower myself to it.. and really get a good look at it.. when the soil is warm .. this should be the definition of cone shaped ....

Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Curly Tops' .. this one is just the opposite.. lol ... it always looks like it is curling up to die... hopefully when it gets some size ... it will strike me better .. this might be in a differing bed.. go figure.. well .. here it is ..

Picea abies 'Pygmaea' .. just a neat little plant with a weird name

Picea abies 'Vermont Gold' .. i think i bought 3 of these for a total under 10$ ... this might be the only one left ... and i dont have high hopes for it coming out the other side of winter ... though they seem to die in the heat of summer ....they are not 'established' and i am sure that is part of the problem .. a lot of hail damage on it

Picea glauca 'Butterball' ... i dont see anything ballish about it.. and certainly nothing buttery .... based on the size at purchase.. it has to be a rooted plant ... so its not a rootstock issue for sure ...

Pinus pumila 'Blue Dwarf' .. really nice .... going to have to get up close and personal with this one also ... and.. that is NOT a weed ... it free range ..carp..just blanked.. stonecrop... thanks google.. sedum ... on my sand.. in the heat of summer.. the only thing green in the pastures .. i hesitate to call it lawn ....

Thuja orientalis `Morgan' an exact mini duplicate [everything but size].. of the one that will not be mentioned ... that always irritates blue ... lol ... though not as limey in summer ... nice deep green with heavy winter bronzing

Jeez, you DO have a lot of conifers!
How tall and old is your Morgan? It has a perfect shape.
I didn't realize that w33d is a dirty word...will never mention it again....promise.

ANY OBSERVATION ON THE GARDEN IS WELCOME ...

i post.. to understand how you guys interpret or see the garden ...

i welcome all comments ... good .. bad .. but no ugly allowed ...

i want to 'see' what you see ....

so have at it ... the replies are my motivation to keep with the photo journal ..

PS: but if you pull my leg.. which is just fine ... expect a snicker.. and a pull back .. funny how i can walk around the yard.. and ignore things... which you highlight... and next spring.. will trigger me into action ... hopefully .. lol

hey all .... barb.. i NEVER use photobucket for photo manipulation ... thats right up there with watching paint dry ... i use a Ulead program ... much faster ... i usually only adjust the darkness ... NEVER the color ... all the pix were taken about 2 weeks back.. just before the snow flew.. all pics in 2 days ... snap and shoot... download... retake a couple that were bad ... label them all at download..using the database .. avoid any typing i can .. lol ... taken in bed sequence.. so immediately put into folders based on beds ... will .. my pix ought to be encouraging you to stop buying MORE .. and save for some acreage .. lol ... i dont know what juniperus pendula would do unstaked ... IMHO.. there are enough ground cover junipers.. that are much better for that ... this is one mean little bat-turd .... you would NEVER want to walk into it.. or brush your hand along it .... concolor is a weed for me... pure yellow sand to at least 15 feet down ... maybe i have perfect drainage ... all my conifers are free range in their third year.. except for intense extended drought .. like this year.. and even then.. i doubt i dragged a hose around the WHOLE yard more than 3 times .... and when i did. . it was the smaller stuff that got watered ...and a 6 foot tree is NOT small stuff ... get over it.. or die.. i am not interested in too many FOO FOO plants.. been there done that.. got a life .... regardless.. thanks for the drop-in notes.. i knew there were more of you out there ... happy holidays ken

geez pam ... thanks for the wonderful comments... and you are welcome for any knowledge i have passed along ... WHAT ARE YOU.. IN THE TEACHING PROFESSION... lol ... you just assigned me a doctoral thesis ... and i am sorry to say ... it isnt going to happen ... lol .. THAT IS THE REASON I GIVE THE OVERVIEW PIX... oops ... and then pix of every plant there.. you will have to figure out how to compare the view to the individual plants .... try opening two windows.. one left on the overview.. and one to scroll thru the pix .... flipping back and forth .... historically ... i would build a bed a year in advance ... designing it with hoses .. and my lawnmower .... and then spend the year getting wood chips and killing grass... and applying chips ... all the while collecting plants ... i try to plant all the new plants in one bed.. makes aftercare much easier ... all the recent transplants in one locale.. that is why you will find similar sized plants all in one bed ... i still have pix of the north pasture to post ... but the holidays seem to be interfering with time ... we will get to them ... for a given bed.. i tend to think.. one green.. one blue.. one yellow .. some small.. some large.. so.. size.. shape, size, color ... then throw in variegated .... i am not really a 'plan it all out' guy .... and think about prostrate.. upright... etc .... it would be the difference between an engineer and a gardener ... lol ... when planting.. tall in back... small in front... etc ... review the various posts... look at the overviews... ask any specific questions ... thats why i am posting .... happy holidays... ken

Call it scionwood ken. Thanks a lot for sharing as the winter is around. Nice-looking sculptured beds and pathways between . I especially liked the curved bed farthest out. Remember, prune when scionwood can be used. If you can keep yourself in that mindset, the better. It's crazy not to give the wood to a guy like Bob Fincham or Dennis Dodge or whomever. Maybe me. Not this year though. Maybe I'll be around this year for a visit. I haven't been up to The Harper Collection for several years. Would love to trut around and we can hit up hidden lakes or other gardens... There's a couple other guys I'd like to visit up there too. Take care man. Dax

5 acres ... 500 feet square plus a driveway .... 5.2 acres total ... to be exact .... bob at arrowhead alpines .... someone i respect highly for his plant knowledge ..... 'suggested' to me once.. that there might not be any difference between carstens and WG .... one would think that the nomenclature police would NOT allow wintergold to be used with the carsten name.. and then without it.. to describe two differing plants.. but obviously that argument would have to begin with peeps actually registering their plants.. eh ... lol ... ken

I think a shot from a helicopter is necessary! You have alot of conifers. Perhaps someday they'll all hybridize and create the perfect man-killing plant.

I've filled up my acre of yard. Next place I've been thinking of getting might have about 4 acres. How much land you have dedicated to this?

That T. o. 'Hetz Midget' will be a nice globe. Mine is about 2.5 ft in all directions. Tough, too. I can't tell you how many winters it spent a month or more at a time being splayed out under snow like a pressed flower but still bounced back the next spring.
