Post Office Stole My Bristlecone

The US Postal Service just put out a sheet of 39-cent stamps featuring "Wonders of America, Land of Superlatives". One of the 40 stamps depicts "Bristlecone Pines, Oldest Trees". The tree shows a bristlecone pine on Wheeler Peak, Nevada, from almost exactly the same angle as the photo taken by David Lanner (my son) for my 1984 book "Trees of the Great Basin". David's photo is licensed for use by a gerontology center in Georgia, so I guess this tree exemplifies peoples' view of what an ancient tree looks like.

Other tree-related stamps on the same sheet are "Tallest Trees, Coast Redwood", "Tallest Cactus, Saguaro", and "Largest Plant, Quaking Aspen", the latter being an unprovable assertion about whose clone is "the largest".

Check it out.
