I too have fairies and gnomes in my garden (so the neighbor kids think). I don't have pictures but here's one I snuck of the gnome. Another of Mr. Apple Tree who comes alive on a full moon.

I love the little Hobbit house with the "sod" roof! Very sweet, I could definitely get into collecting those. I'd better not look anymore or I'll start spending money.

Precious, all of it. Hours of play for the children should come from fairy gardens.

DaWiff went to England one year and brought back photos of a garden center that had figurines placed in terra cotta pots turned on their sides. I took my Beatrix Potter figurines and put in pots in my fairy garden, with all kinds of other trinkets and seashells and lichens and things.

It happens that Buffy loves trinkets, so most have been picked up now. I knew you had to pick up breakables when small children are about, but didn't expect to have a dog who has to be protected from herself.

Carrie, I looked at your garden pictures and I must say you have a slice of heaven. Your gardens are amazing and gorgeous.

I got these at http://www.miniature-gardens.com/. I thought their prices were really reasonable. Everything I got for all three fairy gardens cost less than $250.00 to the door. My husband bought them for me to celebrate our eleventh wedding anniversary (Last year I got a weeping cherry tree. I love being able to attach special events and people to my garden. But I'll save that for another thread.)

Buffy sounds like quite a treasure collector! I omitted fairy figurines because my girls still very much believe in fairies. And I thought they would spoil it for them.

What great ideas! I've started a fairy garden for my nieces. I have some areas that I want to set up with the miniatures (they're so charming) and other areas where the girls can be the "fairies". I would love to find a little seating area for them that would mimick the fairy furniture. They are both four and love to dress up in their fairy outfits (mostly Tinkerbell dresses). I've included a few small blueberry bushes and strawberries for snacks, mixed in with the many cottage flowers, miniature rose and clumps of butterfly bushes. There is an arch on one end and a bird bath with violets under it. Behind the garden will be grapes on a split rail fence and semi-dwarf apple trees.

I also have an area for my nephews (and nieces) which I'm hoping will be ready next year. In the vegetable garden with be a full sized bean teepee they can play under and a Cinderella pumpkin patch. I also want to include a miniature area, where mini vegetables, pumpkins, etc. can be grown with fairy tale characters included. I plan to use climbing beans on a smaller teepee with "Jack" climbing it and "the giant" on top. I saw the idea on a fairy tale gardening site. I also might try to put Linus and the great pumkin in a mini pumpkin patch. There are many fun ideas on the Gardening with Kids forum.

Okay, you all have convinced me to do this. I've been eyeing these gardens for quite sometime now.

Question. Do you leave them up all year long? And what about windy days?

Mine are weathered so I don't mind them being in the garden all year. They stay out all year in a protected area. Fragile one's that decay easy I bring in come the rainey season.

Todance, that's a great idea to put them in flower boxes, especially for winter. I could put one on the front porch propped up in my planter.

I googled "fairy garden," etc. and found all sorts of fun stuff--some quite reasonable, but I'm thinking it would be fun to make part of it.

Fox, listen, it sounds like everyone intends to play a bit, not just the children. Or maybe I am in my second childhood, cuz the charming little gardens draw me like magnets.

Let's see, I could make a container fairy garden for the front steps or dispence with the box and make one under the buckthorn next to the ceramic mushrooms right in front of the porch rockers or in the curve-to-be of my straight walkway next to the b bath/feeder/bensch or in the garden outside the kitchen door where I can see it from my kit table. Whoa!!! But really all could be seen close up and would be sooo precious.
