Col De Dame:Haven fruits in my Backyard!!!

Today despite cold weather with nights in the 40,and days in the 60 since September 10,+ rain Galore,My inground Col de Dame had 3 ripe fruits this Morning.

Memorable fruits ,no doubt.

This is a,private Gardener ,Master Gardener Diploma.

One do not need to go get courses for it,learning the theory of gardening.

When you grow ripe fruits from a Col de Dame in adverse climatic conditions,you are a Master gardener to yourself,and do not need a Diploma!!!!!.

And ,Here is the proof it is perfectly possible!!!!!

Herman those are beautiful and I must agree with your conclusion, you ARE a master gardener. I can hardly wait until I get my tree over this winter. You have me licking my chops.

Thanks Gene:The ideea about a practical master gardener is to sugest and encourage all of us to take the time and grow a more difficult to succesfully ripe cultivar,that it will render a much more complette satisfaction,at the end,of the effort.
As for you in zone 9,I can see a sure success,with this cultivar.

Pitcom, I could only find one online resource that mentioned this, and it really gives no explanation. I will include the link anyway. The only other sources I have are word of mouth from farmers, in my area and the area my parents live in as well as up in Maine. Explanations have included thinning of the cell walls, loss of the antifreezing properties of their tissues due to heat exposure, or just general tenderness of the rapidly formed new growth. Again, this seems to be something that doesn't normally happen, so I guess it hasn't really been studied. At the risk of being obvious,something is happening this year that seems to be so far outside the norm that the various weather predictors are off, sometimes by by a considerable amount (my personal record here was 18 degrees off from predicted to recorded). It's like Mother Nature is saying "put this in your simulations and model it!" Normally, and I mean for many years, I have found my local weather to be consistently accurate within 5 degrees... Anyway, we seem to be heading into a stretch of weather that looks normal, so maybe it is all settling down? Sorry for your losses, it is really frustrating. Weeds are a fact, that's a fact. Tom makes a good point that some weeds here and there are nothing to worry about. Those who say (over and over) that all weeds can be controlled by enough mulch are correct, but a constant heavy layer of mulch is plenty of work to maintain and really is only practical for quite small gardens. In my case, where I want to grow enough crops to provide all my pulse and some grain, maintaining a foot of mulch on over a half-acre is not going to happen. Other ways to keep weeds controlled must be utilized, and fortunately the lore to do so exists and it works. IME, grassy weeds are the main problem, and a heavy continual presence of those despite periodic tillage indicates a mineral balance in the soil that is not close to optimum for crop production. What you want to see is the "fertility" weeds, which are easier to control be mechanical means and are much less onerous for the crops. This is achieved mainly by raising calcium.

Hi Mike - we've messaged back and forth before from the Citrus Forum. I'm in zone 7b, Raleigh NC, which often acts more like zone 8. I'm originally from Norman OK. My property also has Eastern Red Cedars around it and all of them show signs of Cedar Apple Rust. I bought disease resistant apples and all but one of them show signs of the disease but it doesn't overwhelm the trees and some years it barely shows up. Same thing for my Quince trees - they show signs of Cedar Quince Rust. So I would plant whatever variety does well in that area and plan on doing a bit of disease management part of the year. It's all worth it when you can pick fresh, ripe apples. The newer cultivars William's Pride and Goldrush have done well for me. Arkansas Black is the one that requires no spraying and shows virtually no disease at all. The first couple of harvests will have wimpy flavor but after a few years they get really tasty. Nothing beats Goldrush for flavor as far as I'm concerned. Keep in mind that a lot of apples bear alternate years so you won't get a huge harvest every year. In my yard, wildlife eventually figured out what I was growing so now I have to bag and spray and build wire barriers AND trap. Good luck. Plant what you can find and just know that you will be replacing a few of them in a few years. Peach trees grow like weeds and can suddenly die for no reason so don't worry about them too much, just keep planting new ones every couple of years.

I would avoid Ash trees. They get huge, and you must weed out ash seedlings every year. Let me second Skrip's perspective: I believe your beds are far too skinny. As a matter of fact, I was thinking about posting on the "biggest garden mistake" thread that I wish I had created beds a minimum of ten feet wide. Mine are two to four feet wide: I am in the process of removing all of my flowering perennials to plant large shrubs and trees at the edges of the property. That means very little yard; but beautiful greenery on each side, privacy, and a only a small area that is thirsty, which allows for prettier flowers and grass. An alternative to Italian Cypress that is also narrow and tall is golden bamboo, but you have to dig down two feet and install a "bamboo barrier" of heavy plastic to contain it. My neighbors have a back border of purple plum, white birch, and melaleuca (sp?) trees. It is spectacular because they have planted the trees in a wavy line that makes it appear that their garden goes on forever past the fence. They have Nandina domestica beneath the trees, which disguises the fence. It's pretty narrow: I would say that the whole thing does not extend more than six feet at the base of the nandina. The melaleuca is evergreen with whitish trunks that look quite woodsy mixed with the other trees.

H2, I hope you're right about growing well in my area. Dan does well with his, we shared the same climate but our soil is completely different. I hope that doesn't make too much difference. Keep pushing the envelope on what can and cannot be grown in your area, it inspires all of us.

Hi Herman,

I'm not looking for a Diploma, just reporting that Col de Dame did well here in very adverse conditions. Conditions pretty much like yours. Just about all the trees are finished for the year with an odd one or two. I wrote the following on Oct. 9th.

"Surprise, surprise! I found a ripe fig yesterday. A Col de Dame. Its a tiny plant but it did have some nice size figs. Its so long since I ate one I forgot what they tasted like but I remember they were good during the warm weather. Now the nights and mornings are cold. It tasted very good but not like a fig. It was very fruity and on the juicy side. If I was blindfolded I couldn't tell you what it was except that it was very, very good. LOL

So that is my tale. Col de Dame is good.

Herman, it seems you and Leon have tried the CdDs...

I a hoping that my small Col de Dame Gris, Noir and White give all this next year...

I was happy to have the cold weather coming in to give me a break now you have me counting down the days again until I can see my trees break buds!

Peg:You are in Conecticut!!!.
I consider it a very good achivement by you because your climate is a little colder than mine in my opinion.
Congratulation,and you are another person that can say,it did ripe in my yard.
It is a major satisfaction,more important than any Diploma,in my opinion.
If you go to any garden book,they will say,Col De Dame ripe only in Ideal hot long Sommers,so we are defying the nature,here.
Loslunas:I am sure you have a hot enough Sommer to get ripe fruits of Col de Dame in your place.
Just give it a little more protection during young years,and it will work for you.

Thanks for your comments. This little darling, Col de Dame, is only 18 inches high. I just looked at it. It still has 2 figs. One is large and almost ripe. The other is smaller and probably won't ripen as it is getting quite cold, specially at night. It had a total of about a dozen or more figs. We had a record hot summer but NO rain. The lack of rain delayed the ripening of all the trees inspite of constant watering. They were really stressed for moisture.
Once it got cooler and we got some rain those that had figs on the branches for months finally started to ripen and they tasted better than those that did ripen earlier.

A young Beall was a great producer, those that ripened during late summer tasted awful. I picked a couple a few days ago and they were delicious. It still has 10 more good size ones starting to color. I also noticed the the figs that have ripened now in the cold have tough but very sweet skins.

It will be fun to see what the weather brings us next year.

Herman,

You are the FIG WISPERER for sure!!!! You got a way with figs........congratulations for your achievements and your encouragement & information sharing with others.

My Col De Dame tree has dropped all of its leaves and the fruit that are ripening now are not nearly as good tasting as they were the last two years. I will never give up on this cultivar because I KNOW what excellent fruit it can produce even under adverse conditions.
